This segment cleverly rebrands a mere calendar coincidence as a rare celestial event to engage the public imagination. It’s a textbook example of how local media romanticizes basic orbital mechanics for casual consumption.

First Alert Weather Extra: May will include two full moonsAjouté :
Now, Connecticut's only all-weather show. This is First Alert Weather Extra.
And welcome to First Alert Weather Extra. You probably enjoyed today, but changes are a coming, and that's why we got Meteorologist Mike Slifer here to tell us all about that.
>> We've been in this sort of pattern where like Monday, Tuesday, beautiful.
Not always the nicest for the weekend.
>> Yes, we have been in this pattern.
What's up with that? We need a sunny Sunday.
>> Well, we will see a sunny Sunday. It just won't be all that warm. Mhm, okay.
>> And heading into next week, things will eventually get warmer. Okay. So, this this pattern we've been stuck in certainly not changing this weekend.
However, we do have some good news to pass along. First and foremost, our I-Cam view in Torrington showing that things are dry across Connecticut right now. And we do expect things to stay dry throughout the remainder of the evening.
We are tracking some showers to our west. More on that in just a moment. Let's take your First Old Saybrook looking just stellar right now.
Plenty of sunshine, especially along the shoreline. And we'll finish with a live look at our I-Cam here in Mystic with people out walking on the boardwalk along the Mystic River. It really is a beautiful evening outside, maybe just a bit cool compared to where we typically would be this time of year. Average high temperature is in the upper 60s. We still see some mid-60s away from Long Island Sound. With wind out of the south, 58 in Groton, 59 in New Haven.
The sound up to 52°, and then as you head inland from there, temperatures are in the lower 60s. Norwich, Willimantic to Putnam. 63 in Windham, 62 in Torrington, 61 in Waterbury.
Here's our rather here's First Alert Live Radar, Connecticut's only live radar. It is scanning clear and dry within our state's borders, but what we see here, a little radar return just on the edge of Connecticut, New York, right along the border here. We are keeping track of a batch of showers to our west.
We've been talking about this disturbance, giving you the first alert that these showers would eventually reach us. But if you watch closely here, the showers are beginning to break apart a bit, weakening as they actually make it closer to Connecticut. So, perhaps we'll start to see an increased risk of showers over the next few hours. We think the greatest likelihood though is going to be around and after 10:00 or 11:00 tonight and through the overnight hours. Temperatures will be falling out of the 60s and eventually out of the 50s. We'll be in the 40s as we start off the day next week.
Or pardon me, as we start off the day tomorrow. And you'll note the icons for the rain popping up 10:00, 11:00 tonight. That's when we see the greatest risk of showers actually moving through.
So, from a timing perspective, we don't really expect too much of an impact.
Temperatures will be in the low and mid-40s, pretty seasonable for this time of year. Mostly cloudy, and as the disturbance pivots in, we're expecting those showers to be more isolated in nature. First Alert Future Cast showing those showers continuing through about daybreak tomorrow, a little bit thereafter. 7:00, 8:00 in the morning, we're still looking at some showers, but then they start to fizzle out. We can't rule out an isolated pop-up at some point during the day on Saturday. By Saturday evening though, what we'll be watching is this storm that slides by offshore. And we do expect this to be far enough away that we actually don't see anything out of it, not even clouds.
And we'll likely see the sun come out pretty quickly on Sunday, leading to a mostly sunny sky, a little bit breezy on the backside of this system.
Temperatures on Sunday running still a bit below average for this time of year.
However, our next big thing is focused on the start of next week. Monday and Tuesday especially, that's when temperatures for many towns will be in the 70s. On Tuesday, we're expecting 70s statewide. Average high temperature is in the upper 60s.
With the warmth comes dry and breezy conditions though, and this time of year especially as we haven't completely greened up across the state just yet.
There could be a slightly increased fire risk early next week. We'll break that down in a bit more depth coming up in our Super 7-Day Forecast. Plus, we'll have a more in-depth look at the weekend. That's in just a few more minutes. All right, Mike. Thank you.
Today is our last day of Space Week.
First Alert Meteorologist Tyler Hughes spoke with two astronauts about what it takes to make it in orbit.
Today is the last day of our week-long series here on First Alert Weather Extra showcasing our interview with NASA Astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway aboard the International Space Station. And one of the cool things is that both Jessica and Jack told me they've wanted to be astronauts since they were little. So, I wanted to wrap up the interview by asking if they had any advice for kids who may want to follow in their footsteps someday. But just one last question for you guys. You know, young people all over Connecticut, all over the world could be watching this this interview. If there are young people out there that want to follow in your footsteps one day, want to go to space, if not deep space and beyond, what's the advice that you would have for them?
The advice we have for young people the world over is to follow your dreams and do the things that you love. Becoming an astronaut, if that's your dream, is an awesome dream to have, and Joel and Jessica and I have had it from a very young age.
But you got to find a way that makes sense for you. Like I joined the Navy and became a pilot, and that was my route to NASA. Jessica became a scientist and got her PhD and did scientific research before she joined NASA as an astronaut. There's lots of ways to become become an astronaut, and we need all types of engineers, science scientists, and pilots.
And so, find the thing that you're passionate about and find a way to explore that, find a way to go to school on that, to get smart on it, and become really good at it. Because when you're doing the thing that you love, everyone wants to be around you. Everyone's excited by it. Everyone's inspired. And once you you're down that path, the opportunity to become an astronaut, you know, every couple years there's a there's an application cycle that opens up. And if you're doing the thing that you love and you're really good at it, you're going to have a chance. So, we encourage you guys to follow your dreams and apply when you when you have a chance.
The full conversation was about 20 minutes long, and we covered all sorts of different topics. You can watch the full unedited interview, and here's the thing, it's totally free. Just head on over to our website or WFSB Plus.
Sky gazers are in for a treat this month. Two full moons will grace the sky. The first has the nickname the flower moon as it arrives when wildflower wild flowers begin to bloom.
The full moon will rise low at sunset Friday and appear full Saturday night, too. The second full moon of May will be referred to as a blue moon and will peak on May 31st before the sun rises. It is rare for a month to start and end with a full moon. It only happens seven times every 19 years.
