I Tested Tesla FSD Supervised in a Thunderstorm at Night
Added:All right, and welcome back to the channel. We'll have a hard test tonight for Tesla FSD because we are in the middle of a thunderstorm with quite some rain and uh it's at night as well. So, let's see how it copes enabling FSD. And I'm going to try to get to that roundabout, but it failed and see what it does there. I'm just going to do a short trip, but see what's what when it's working or whether it's not working in the rain. And it's raining quite heavily right now. But so far, it's not giving me any error messages for visibility or something like that, which enhanced autopilot would definitely do.
Yeah, I was waiting for this the whole evening and the rain was just dropping off as it was approaching my location, but Oh, yep. So, here autopilot already disabled.
So, let's see if we can reenable it.
No, it's not willing to enable at this point.
Let's see if I take the turn here what it will do now.
Auto self-driving is temporarily unavailable. Wow. Okay, that's probably a quick test then.
Okay, it's enabled again.
So maybe if the cameras are not cleaned.
Whoa, nice lightning.
It's going to freak out. So if it's stationary, then the cameras are getting too wet. That could be the issue. Let's see whether it's still a red light up ahead.
Again, we are running software update 2026.17.5 with autopilot 14.2.2.6.

I'm looking at the rear view camera here and that is already quite wet.
It will not be able to recognize a lot of things here. But let's see. We're stopping and whether or not it's going to cancel again.
Okay. Not this time. So, so far so good.
But that was a weird one.
Let's hope the rain keeps up a little bit like this. A little bit longer.
It's definitely an interesting test case.
In front of me, there's a car with an L on it, which means that's a student driver. We don't know if it is a student driver on there at this time of day.
Yeah, it's definitely not the type of weather where you would uh really drive fast.
Now, up on the bridge, as you know, there's a little section where you can do 70 km an hour.
I just want to avoid being stuck behind this person for the roundabout. So, let's see if we can overtake him on autopilot potentially or otherwise I will accelerate through it.
Sorry, I said autopilot. It should be FSD.
It's not doing I'm going to accelerate.
It initiates the lane change by itself.
I just accelerate a little bit and that's it.
It goes back.
My hands are really near the steering wheel at this point. Visibility on this road is not that well, at least for human eyes.
The camera can see so much more. Of course, that was a puddle.

Again, v visibility is not good at all, but uh FSD just keeps going on. It's uh as if there's no problem.
So, here we coming up at the roundabout.
Let's see if the signs are still in the same location or whether it's more into the center.
From here, it seems like the 50 sign up ahead is more towards the center. Let's see how FSD will handle it this time.
So now it should definitely not be able to drive into that road, will it?
Yeah. So now it just knows it has to go there. So it was actually just a case of the road being clear enough or the opening being like just not wide enough.
That's why it was doubting.
Yeah, I can do 50 km an hour. And again once more. FSD is doing 35 km an hour.
This time limited visibility. The rain puddles here on the left side where it's driving in.
I can't blame it.
What would a human do? Would you drive 50 km an hour here in this particular situation?
Now here it turned. He wanted to turn.
Nope. I'm not going to let it turn this time.
It needs to know that it can actually move straight on. So perhaps it is confused with all those signs in front of me that it thinks it cannot go straight on.
But yeah, besides that unexpected turn, it handled that kind of nicely. And then here on the right, you see that's only half a sign. That's basically says the end of the road works. So the car doesn't really know that it can do 70.
So I'm going to accelerate and manually put it to 70 km an hour.
Yeah, while I was watching the dash, the car actually saw that in night vision mode.
But getting it up to 70 kilometers an hour is not working with just scrolling.
Like some say that you need to scroll like three above and then it will accelerate.
But the car is just sticking to whatever I accelerated to and actually slowing down a little bit. Still thinks I can do 30 km an hour because it did not see a sign that says otherwise.
Oh, that one is coming fast.
Yep. And MSD is moving slightly out of the way.
So again, I'm just going to accelerate towards 70. See if it sticks to 70.
Yeah, now it realizes it can do 70.
Let's see what it does.
68 is okay as far as I'm concerned here as long as it doesn't drop any further.
I think this must be close to the first time that I'm doing this drive in such bad weather with old autopilot. I would not have done this probably.
Whoa.
The lightning storm is quite impressive to see as well, so that's an added bonus.
It is again dropping to 50 quite a bit before the should I say before the traffic light.
Now here the car is kind of yeah it was still next to the lane to the presorting lane but FSD was waiting to get in front of that. That was interesting.
Camera visibility limited. It says clear all dirt, debris, or water from camera.
So, when you're stationary, that is uh becoming an uh an issue.
I'm just going to watch the front camera. See if that helps.
Now I was paying attention.
So the night vision doesn't always catch my eyes apparently. Going to accelerate up to 70 km an hour to see if it drops back down to 50 for that uh scurve.
Yeah, speeds are definitely a problem for uh FSD. So now it should start slowing down which it does. Okay, let's see by how much.
50 is quite slow. 48 even.
But again, the rain might have something to do with it in terms of visibility.
And I do have the contextual speed limit on.
Now, since this this is just a short trip, I'm going to take the not the honor ramp on the left here, but on the right just to enter the highway.
initiating right turn and let's see how fast it will go in the rain on the highway. I know there are some countries like France where the max speed is limited during rain. In Belgium that's not the case. We can do 120 at any time on the highway.
Whether that's a good idea, that's a different thing. But legally we can do 120 in this kind of weather as well.
It is not accelerating that much. 80 km an hour to merge onto the highway. It's not really good speed, but it had the room to do it.
Oh wow. The maximum speed now says 110.
So it is adjusting to the weather conditions.
That's nice. If it would if it would go up to 110 now, then that will be fine.
Whoa, another nice one.
So, sticking to 100 km an hour. Barely moving faster than the people next to me.
It's taking distance. It's going all the way to the left of the lane.
And now it's moving back to the center.
So it is really taking distance away from cars.
Now it was moving back to the center because that car on the left was also passing me. But again here it's going to the left of the lane while passing that car on the right.
And let's see if it goes to the right to sort or to go to the right as much as possible.
Again, it is sticking to the center lane. I would have gone to the right at this point.
Yeah, this is definitely too long to be sticking in the center lane. Again, a lot of people do that. Doesn't mean it's legal.
So, it's building up a little bit of speed. Going 105 now.
And the maximum speed says 105.
So it is adjusting somehow to what it is seeing which is again it's a safety feature.
Countries that limited their top speed due to visibility issues, rain and such, they do that for a reason, of course.
So, it's going to merge onto the right lane here because we need to take the next exit.
So, this is proper. We just passed the truck and we're doing the exit or we're doing the right lane shift.
And now we need to take the exit. And again, as you know from the previous video, on the exit, there is another right exit that we need to take.
Yeah, it seems we've got the worst of the storm already. Was just a short one.
Wipers are still going berserk here, which is not necessary with the amount of rain that we still have. It's hardly a drizzle anymore at this point.
That's still a problem after all those years. Tesla still has issues with just basic wiper functions.
I wish they would solve that first.
Well, no. Maybe the speed issues first.
I can I got used to to the wiper issue.
Yeah, it's doing this fine. Here it needs to merge, but there is no cars coming. So that's an easy one.
And here I wonder whether it will again be as late to merge to the left lane before the split.
It's not that busy. Oh no, it's going to overtake these cars first. That would be interesting uh to see if it will go to the right again before or whether it will stay here on the left lane, which I would do because it's pre-sorting.
Yeah, the car is too close next to me.
So, it's going to stick in this lane.
For me, this is the normal way of driving. As of this point, you need to be in this lane. Otherwise, if you try to merge in here, you're blocking all traffic, especially when people are standing in front of the red light.
But understandably, if you're not used to this specific intersection situation, then you probably would drive on the right lane until almost the very last moment before going to the left lane to take this road.
Still the same issue here where you can only I was paying attention, man.
where you can only do uh according to the car 50 km an hour but actually you can do 70. So I'm going to accelerate up to 70. It will match the car in front of me, of course.
Yeah, I think it did great in the rain. I was not expecting that. I was not expecting the roundabout situation at the beginning to be so smooth also because I mean it's dark, it's rainy and and yeah, it's it's an unusual situation but it handled it nicely and very confidently now.
So that is something to uh to view as a plus point that it was just the problem was just because it was indeed too wide or the opening was too wide and the car thought it could drive through there the previous time.
Driving a little bit more to the center lane here to avoid the puddles.
But so far so good. Yeah, this uh has been a nice run here.
The only thing that we have left is the lane shift up ahead. But of course, we have a car in front of us. Let's hope it will go left or right at the traffic light. So, we have no car in front of us.
And then we'll see if it will take it at normal speeds or whether it will break as autopilot used to do.
Yeah, the the pay please pay attention to the road is really not working well at night. I'm getting too many false positives on this because I am paying attention to the road.
Let's see if I can accelerate up to speed.
Yeah, this is me accelerating.
Let's see how it reacts on the lane shift.
Yeah, no problem whatsoever. It knows it can drive there. Autopilot would break a lot uh thinking it would hit the back of that truck, that park truck that was there.
So, yeah, that's awesome. Great. Great test. We're definitely going to be testing more uh in bad weather, in more dense areas. Of course, I have some nice roads here in the city center where I live as well, and I will do the major cities uh just as well to see how it handles it on our Belgian roads.
