In professional cycling races, breakaway strategies are most effective in mountainous stages where sprinters cannot compete, and teams must balance attacking on climbs with maintaining a lead-out train for sprinters; successful breakaways require careful timing of attacks on steep final climbs and strategic positioning of domestiques to support the escape.

Ganna Targets Victory on Home Roads - Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage 13 | PreviewAdded:
Tomorrow's Giro stage takes us into Filippo Ganna's backyard. He's been announcing that he's targeting this stage for weeks now and I can't wait to see if he can win in front of his family. Hello everyone, I'm Georgie and welcome to my preview of Giro d'Italia stage 13.
But before we move on to stage 13 talk as always, let's recap stage 12 won by Alex Segaert. Oh my god, what a breakaway in the end that was. But we're going to count his win as a win from the peloton for our Giro stage hunter game.
That means that Neil McManus is still leading. He's in our maglia rosa with 50 points. 10 points clear off two guys at second and third. I'm still at sixth place with all scenarios getting in the right but not getting the winners. Don't forget to play this game in the comments and of course subscribe to my channel so you never miss a preview. So, how did actually Alex Segaert win this?
Well, as predicted, a Movistar attacked on those climbs in the middle of the stage. First, they dropped Tobias Ludvigsson, then Man was in big trouble. He dropped immediately on the second climb and Jonathan Milan was pushing, pushing, pushing but in the final kilometer he was also dropped. And they built a lead of around 1 minute in front of the sprinters and they kept on pushing on the descent on the undulating terrain after the climb and once the sprinters were 2 minutes behind they once again made a crucial mistake. They are not watching this channel. I keep saying if you attack in a stage like this, you're going to get vulnerable in the finish.
You have to have someone that's going to do a lead out for the sprinters. You should have as many teams working together who have sprinters, but this time round Ben Turner had a mechanical.
EF, Movistar, and SN, they pushed the tempo to not let him come back, but that was a big mistake because they also used their domestiques. Ineos used their They spent Jack Haig, and then in the end in the final 4 km, it was a perfect timing. A true Alexey Lutsenko move. He goes away from the peloton, and that was game over. He wins this stage 3 seconds in front of the sprinters. Tour Ard surprisingly in second, Silva in third, and Vernons Stuyven, Aular only sixth after so much work from Movistar. Mikels in seventh, EF also working a lot, and then Arrieta only eighth. So, a great day for Bahrain Victorious as El Alio also keeps his pink jersey. He also takes six bonus second at the Red Bull kilometer.
A truly glorious day for Bahrain. Even Igor, of course, in second. Andres Camargo, O'Connor, Hindley, Storer, G.
Pellizzari, Harper, Velasco, they were all in that group. Velasco actually also took two bonus seconds, and Ben O'Connor took four bonus seconds at the Red Bull kilometer.
It could have been a big day in the Maglia Ciclamino battle, but still Jonathan Arrieta only eighth. So, he's still behind Paul Magnier. Milan in third, Silva moves into fourth in front of Seghart, who is now fifth, and a no big changes in the King of the Mountains Jersey for the Maglia Azzurra. However, Enric Mas was smart to ride over those climbs in first place, so maybe he's going for that blue jersey, but it's really hard to see him winning it.
And obviously in the white jersey competition, El Alio still leads, but Pellizzari will keep wearing that jersey for him.
So, what do we actually have on stage 13 from Alexandria to Verbania, the hometown of Filippo Ganna, 190 km, but for the first 165 it is almost completely flat. However, those two climbs are quite tricky, especially the second one. I will show that climb a bit later to you. It's quite steep and near the end of this stage carries 25 points for the Maglia Ciclamino. So, sprinters teams are not interested in this one, I think. The sprinters were really cooked today. You can see the pain on their faces during the broadcast. Uh they don't want to suffer again tomorrow.
They will just save their strength for a Sunday, for the Milan stage. Then those versatile sprinters also uh took a lot of toll today. They were really pushing on that climb and on the flats.
So, who can really win this stage? That is the big question. I think we will once again see a real battle for the breakaway formation. If, let's say, 15-20 guys go, it can be a nailed-on breakaway stage and then the breakaway fights for the win. Uh who will control this in the peloton? Well, I don't think that any team really wants or even has the power to do it. Uh UAE, they can once again try with Morgado, with Christen, with Narváez, why not? Uh then again, will Lidl-Trek even let Narváez in a breakaway? That is an interesting point to look at, but can they really stop him? That is a also another uh big question. This is how that final climb looks. Uh uh It is a third-category climb, but 4.7 km at 7%, but final 2 km are well over 9%, almost 10%. Uh this km 10.7, so it can be brutal. Uh this climb crests some uh, 12-km from the finish.
So, it will be interesting to see if someone will attack here uh, from the break. Well, of course, someone will, but uh, can he really escape? Then, uh, the descent is quite technical. It reminds me a bit of the Poggio.
And then, uh, final uh, 6-7 km are completely flat in the town of Verbania on the Lago Maggiore coastline. So, this is an interesting stage and I think it will, in fact, go to the breakaway. As I said, no one will want to chase it in the peloton. Then, we will have those guys from 10th uh, to 20th position in the GC. They might want to sneak into this breakaway and get some free minutes for the GC.
And who are bookmakers' favorites? Well, of course, they have Jonathan Narváez once again as the top favorite. But, he had uh, difficult 2 days. He was in a breakaway 2 days ago. He was in the mix today. Can he really do it 3 days in a row? Well, he for sure has to try it also for the Maglia Ciclamino. Uh, Giulio Ciccone, of course, he he and Lidl-Trek, they are just searching for that stage win. They want something from this Giro d'Italia and it just keeps escaping them.
He will, of course, try once again for sure. That final climb suits him perfectly. I think Jay Hindley, of course, for UAE. Then, some sprinters who can maybe survive that climb like Silvan Scharner, Scaroni, Aular, but I don't really see them surviving. Uh, Turner Strong as well. Uh, Morgado Sobrero from the breakaway alongside Arieta, Ulissi Valgren, all those guys I can see them in the mix alongside Enric Mas. He of course have to try. Movistar in the same boat as Lidl-Trek, I think.
But, Movistar is riding this a bit more smart uh, than Lidl-Trek. And if they keep on going, I think that stage will will come for them in this Giro. But, I skipped one name and that is the name that I started with in this preview. A home hero, Filippo Ganna. He let the break He let the peloton go on the first climb today and I think he was saving his strengths for tomorrow. On his home roads, he knows them better than anyone.
He knows that climb. He knows that descent. And for sure, he's going to get in a breakaway. He will try it. He will attack on the final climb. Can he win this stage? Well, I certainly hope so and he's going to be my pick for tomorrow. So, thank you everyone for watching this video. I hope you enjoyed it. Give me a like if you did. Don't forget to subscribe and play in our Giro Stage Hunter game. Have a great day and I hope to see you tomorrow for the for my preview of the all-important mountainous, incredible Stage 14. Bye.
