French MXGP Turns Dangerous | World Champion Reacts After Tragedy, Herlings VS Coenen WOW!

[00:00:01]WHAT IS UP, GUYS? HOW ARE WE DOING? SO, today's episode is all about the MXGP in France. Now, I love watching MXGP. Their riders, Hurlings, the Brothers, Febra, they have some of the baddest dudes on earth, and they only ride outdoor motocross, so they are so good at it. Unfortunately, man, we had a tragic accident. Now, T-Bolt Benistant is alive. He's in the hospital. I don't know what his condition or if he'll make a full recovery, but it was terrifying to see it went down. Then they had a restart in the second moto and it really Roman Feverra blew him out. I'll get into that in a second. Like I don't know what the FIM does. And I was like, okay, well, how much do they charge? I'm going to get into all that.

So, I'm going to start with the Tele Benestant accident. It was on the first lap of the first moto. Now, they come around and it was this gnarly section and this track the way the conditions were, I mean, it was naturally incredibly dangerous. It was hard packed. And on today's bikes, with the amount of traction and speeds these guys are going, it's incredible.

[00:02:27]So, you're going to have a certain amount of danger. And when you crash on that hard French dirt like that, that's like landing on concrete. So, coming off that hill, man, he crashed in a bad spot. I didn't see what happened. He tangled with somebody else. Fortunately, where the accident happened, that is part of motocross. It's dangerous.

[00:02:46]There's no way to fix it being dangerous. I don't know how you change the track or get rid of it. I didn't see anything there that was exceptionally out of line. They didn't hit a tree stump, tree branch. They didn't hit a pole. It looked like a racing incident.

[00:03:00]But the amount of incompetence that was displayed after his accident is unforgivable. You cannot have a rider.

[00:03:09]Poor TBO was laying there for 8 minutes on the track. 8 minutes. Apparently, he was knocked unconscious and then when he came to, he said he didn't have feeling in one or both of his legs. Alarming at that point. Now, first off, if a guy's unconscious, you don't move them. And if he doesn't come to within a lap or two and sit up and get off the track, you have to red flag it. Not only is it dangerous to the rider and the safety crew on the track, any of them could be hit. This is a dangerous sport with those huge kickers in that section. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's very possible a rider loses it and goes in and now makes a bad horrific event 10 times worse if they're there for more than two laps. You have to red flag it.

[00:04:00]You cannot keep letting them go. And now I'm not a expert when it comes to spinal or you know paralyzation type damage but when that is suspected time is so crucial. So what happens is when there's an impact on the spine, a broken back, turns out with this one, it was the T3 and the T4 of T-Benistant, it is a race to get him stabilized, comfortable, and instead they left him on the track for 8 minutes and then not only did they not fly him away in a helicopter, it's almost 100° out and they got this guy laying on the side of the track. Albeit they gave him shade.

[00:04:40]They did the best they could, but they needed to get him to an air conditioned room to a hospital so they can reduce the swelling in that spine cuz that's when the paralysis comes in. A lot of times people will break their back.

[00:04:54]They're not paralyzed. And then as the swelling comes in, it causes paralysis.

[00:04:59]They have a saying in hospitals or doctors, time is spine. That means get that thing stabilized, get it cooled down so it doesn't swell so you limit the amount of damage. Now, leaving a dude laying in 100 degree heat for over 30 minutes before you've got him to an air conditioned building and off to a hospital where they can do everything within their power. Now, I'm not saying this caused anything extra or did anything extra to Benot. We'll never know. The doctors can tell us that. But they reduce the odds of it not turning out well by waiting so long. You just can't do that. There is no race on earth that is worth losing his ability to walk for the rest of his life. Not only that, when you got guys for five laps or almost half the moto slowing down through that section, it breaks up the rhythm. I think that's part of the reason Roman Fever and Tom Vial both tucked the fronts. They were kind of it throws your attention span. And I know they're professionals and they still ride through and they can get around. It can slow down, speed up, but it messes with the flow of the race. And the track was already hard to pass. Now you've just limited like three or four turns and made it go single file. You made it even worse. You really affected the flow of the race. This thing should have been red flagged on lap two. As soon as the medical got to him and realized they were not able to move him off the track within a lap or two, you throw the red flag. At that point, racing doesn't matter. It becomes the concern for the injured rider. The other riders, while they might be mad if they were leading, they all understand it could be them on the ground and they will go along with it. Fevo was pissed. Roman Fever is the defending champion and he let the FIM have it. Now, as great as the racing was in France, that track was dangerous. I mean, highlevel danger. And I get it.

[00:06:50]T-Bolt got hurt on one of the acceptable dangerous sections. But I saw railings.

[00:06:55]I saw a couple of the women riders fly off the track and land on fences. It had no runoff. Modern bikes go 50 to 60 mph outdoors easily, if not faster. With gigantic square edge bumps like that, you have to have a little bit of runoff, a little bit of space before guys run into trees, poles, and these fences.

[00:07:17]Like I was cringing every time the guys went past this cuz if somebody were to catch one of these breaking bumps wrong and go right into that railing, oh my gosh, that could be disastrous to them, to the fans on the other side. I mean, there was so many unacceptable dangers at this event. I was like, well, who looks after this? Who goes to this race and checks it out? Well, it's FIM sanctioned now. FIM is the world organization that oversees racing. It's the AMA of the world. It makes it official in people's minds. It's a bunch of people that steal money from motorcyclists and give you the stamp of approval. So, it's the world championship. So, it's the official one and that's the one the manufacturers recognize. That's the one they want.

[00:07:58]That's the one that they can promote and sell motorcycles with. But the FIM and the race owners, which is in front, have no regard for the safety of the riders whatsoever. So, these riders pay $2,700 a year for their FIM license. If you want to race one race, I think it's $1,100 to get your one race license for the FIM. That's just the FIM. Then you pay another $500 for entry fee. And I'm not sure who gets that. I'm not sure if that's in front uh Jeppe Luango or David Lewango or the the current race promoter. And I complain about the AMA series not giving much money back. They don't give a dollar. You don't get a single dollar at these races. You are 100% racing for the promotion of your own personal sponsors. They give nothing back at these events. And then after the restart, it got me thinking, where are the FIM officials? And Roman Fever said the same thing. And now I'm not sure if there were actual FIM officials there, but they did not seem to know the rules.

[00:09:01]In the second moto, there was a huge pile up on a dangerous turn. By the way, that was incredibly dangerous. Now, once you have a turn that dog legs like that, right off the bat, it was fine early in the day when it was groomed, but once that became where these guys had like a 60 mph run into these three-foot breaking bumps in that second moto, that was an accident waiting to happen. They had a huge one that caused a restart.

[00:09:24]They had another one on this next lap.

[00:09:27]It was like, how come the where's the FIM safety official to say, "Hey, you know what? This is dangerous. We need to groom this whole straightaway as well.

[00:09:36]take the extra five minutes. The riders will be fine with it. Somebody might complain, but safety outranks complaints any day of the week. So, I looked into how the FIM does their do they have a race director specifically at the event.

[00:09:49]Do they have a traveling guy like our clown Michael Peliter for the AMA? And it looks like they don't apparently. So what they do is they pass off rules and guidelines to the whatever country is the hosting country and that promoter and then they have to like send pictures or sign off on it. Well, clearly that's a loose program because the guys there, the race director, I don't know if he was the permanent guy. I don't know if he was temporary. He didn't seem to know the rules very well. And for an organization in the FIM that charges over $200,000 to the riders just in licensing fees, you'd think they could at least have a traveling race director.

[00:10:28]Keep in mind, when they have a traveling race director, that's on the local promoter to pay that. So, why wouldn't they have a staff that goes to every race and checks it and says, "Hey, that's dangerous. That's dangerous.

[00:10:40]Okay, we know the rules inside now under the re restart. We do this." because these teams spend millions millions of dollars to go racing to get these results and Tim Geyser's season might be over because he wasn't allowed to ride the second moto and I think that might have been the actual correct call according to the rule book. But they almost let him take off. If it wasn't for Tom Vial getting stopped, they would have missed that and let him race. Come on, man. This is some po dunk fair racing stuff. This is what I expect at the local track when they just take volunteers. This is world championship motocross at the highest level and you guys look like a bunch of monkeys effing up football. Between the lack of knowledge about the rules, the safety concerns or lack thereof, man, it really tarnishes GP racing and it sucks cuz these are some of the best dudes in the world and what they're doing on those bikes was amazing. The racing was off the hook. All right, enough complaining.

[00:11:32]Now to the absolutely amazing performance put on by both Lucas Kunan and Jeffrey Hurlings. These dudes, this is one of those races where you look back and you go, "Holy crap, how did they go that fast?" Towards the end of that second moto, I think Jason Thomas said they were going like six seconds a lap faster than third place Roman Fever.

[00:11:52]They put like a mile on them. They were ripping and it was hot. I mean, it was in the afternoon, second moto, tracks demolished, and these two savages are just going wide open like sprint laps.

[00:12:05]It was gnarly. And Jeffrey Hurlings looked so good and he held tough and he held off the young tiger and Lucas Kunan. I couldn't believe it. Kunan threw everything at it towards the end of that. I mean, they were going so fast. It was borderline scary. And a lot of times when you see races, they're great races cuz they had a lot of lead changes. This never had a lead change, but it was still incredibly exciting. I mean, he was closing, closing, and he'd make a mistake. Closing closing, make a mistake. Is he going? The mind games between Hurling and Kunan. Holy crap, these guys are badass. But the old dog had a little bit more moment in him and he ended up winning the race and he looked completely spent afterward. But man, it it's cool seeing a legend like Hurlings just throw it out there, you know, late in his career, looking amazing on that Honda to hold off Lucas and say, "Hey, you might be coming. You might be the best, just not today." And Lucas had to be frustrated because he was clearly a little bit faster than Hurlings, but that track was so hard to pass. I've never seen a world GP like a GP facility with that narrow of straightaways. I mean, it seriously did look like a local fair race where you had limited amount of ground. I don't know how the FIM approves a track that narrow with railings.

[00:13:21]I'll just say they're probably corrupt.

[00:13:22]I haven't done the research into them that I have like the AMA and the American series, but it's the same business plan they use. You have a sanctioning body. The FIM is the AMA.

[00:13:32]You have the series which is infront and then you have the tracks that pay this upfront fee. I think they pay close to $750,000 to infront just for the rights to have one and then they redeem their money with ticket sales. But same basic business plan as over here, but I don't know exactly who gets what, but the Kums family and the Luongo family, they got the same business plan and it clearly is working. They're both getting really rich. But on that narrow track, I mean, Lucas just he only had like one or two passing spots. And of course, the WY veteran always knew where to defend at the right time. What a race. And yeah, Lucas will have to take second, but he got one, two. They tied on points and the championship is tight. I think Lucas has two points over Jeffrey Hurlings right now. Man, these guys and that's a long series. I can't wait to watch them next week and see how Lucas bounces back. And I'm curious if Jeffrey Herurlings, I mean, he put so much out in that second moto, man. You know, when you're older, over 30, when you put an effort like that in, it takes something out of you. Can he rebound in six days?

[00:14:36]I don't know. Then you had Roman Feverra, the reigning champion, and he had a bad day. He wasn't looking too good in the first moto and I think he was I truly believe this silly crash that he had where he like just touched his leg and flew off the bike. I think his mind was elsewhere when he was saw TBO Beniston on the ground for multiple laps and I think he was distracted. Same as Tom Vial in that first moto. I truly think they were kind of concerned cuz it's it's not good. And like I said, these guys are professionals, but when you see somebody down like that, it messes with you. And it looked like it messed with both those guys in that first moto. And so Febra had a uh he had a rough first moto. I think he came in at seventh place. Tim Novisor Geyser was flying and he was not too far off of Lucas Kunan and Jeffrey Hurlings and I think he might have been in that battle.

[00:15:25]It might have been a three- rider battle in that second moto if he would have been allowed to race. Unfortunately, there was that huge crash. Tom Vial hit that giant kicker and that dangerous start and took out half the field and it claimed Tim Geyser and he went to switch bikes and they wouldn't let him. So both Tom Vial and Tim Geyser had to miss the second moto which bumped Roman Feverra.

[00:15:45]He got third in the second moto that bumped him to third overall. So it was a decent day for the reigning champion, but I appreciate him speaking out against the FIM and taking a stand of it's horrible when you pay that much money to go racing. You don't get any purse back and they can't at least give you basic safety standards or clear understanding officials that know the rules inside and out that don't have to guess and question and count on you guys to make the call cuz they would have let guys erase if Vial didn't yell at them and these guys are frustrated with that.

[00:16:15]And we're starting to see 250 former champion Kaida Wolf, the big man in the Husqavarna. He was going really good.

[00:16:24]Now hard packed is not typically his specialty. He is a sand guy, but he looked really good. He started the season injured and he's kind of racing himself into shape after that four-week break. I think you're going to see Kaido Wolf getting better and better and getting in the mix with those front runners. You're going to see him on the podium and he might even end up with a win at some point this year. But that's it for the 450s. It was incredible. My heart goes out to Tibo Benistant. I hope all the feeling comes back and he makes a full recovery and maybe this was what spurs these riders and the GPS who are completely taken advantage of. much worse than AMA riders. I complain about the standards over here. It's even worse over there. They are completely puppets to the organization in the 250 class triumph. It was their day. They were dominating. They looked so good.

[00:17:09]Gileiam, you remember him? He came over here, rode for star, rode for Rockstar Husky for a minute, and then he's gone over there and really found a home in at Triumph. He was going so fast. His first overall victory with a 1-1. He didn't get a two- three and back into his first overall win. He went 1 with authority. I mean, he clearly looked like the best guy all day long. His teammate Camden Mlen got up and got second. Triumph went two at this race. It was incredible. For a fairly new brand to be dominating GPS, or at least this GP like that was impressive. I guarantee the KTM boys and Simon Langenfelder and Sasha Kunan are scratching their heads going, "Oh boy, they were way back. They neither of those guys even made the podium. Matias Valain got third place, the French rider, his first podium for the rookie on the Kawasaki. I believe it's his first year in uh MX2. I think he was a EMX rider last year, maybe his second year, but it was his first podium and he looked really good out there on that Kawasaki. He was charging, you know, I think he got first or second in the qualifying race and he looked like he might be able to win at his home GP, but yeah, good for him to get on the podium.

[00:18:17]The most disappointing guy of the year for me has been Liam Evers. I really thought that he was going to become a guy to battle for this championship, be battling for wins week in and week out.

[00:18:28]I know he had some injuries. He had the ankle injury, but he had four weeks off.

[00:18:31]I figured he would come back spitting fire, but he did not look like it. He just looks like a guy. He went 54 for fourth. Now, that's about what I like. I I don't expect him to do that. I mean, that's very average in that MX2 class cuz there is a difference in talent.

[00:18:46]They kicked those guys out at 23 years old. So when they bumped those guys out, that's where T-Bull Benant was in the 250 class last year, turned 23, had to go 450. Uh you expect a guy like Liam Evers, who's been in that class for a while, to be battling for wins and titles, and he just wasn't. He just isn't. He doesn't look like a guy that can actually get back on top and and battle for this thing. And that's disappointing. The guy who looked really good was Giannis Raceless. This guy was flying, but he emptied the tank in the second moto. got like fifth or sixth in the first moto. Got the whole shot and took off in that second moto and Gill Gillian Perez stalked him almost the whole way and he emptied his tank and he had about 20 25 minutes in him and that was it. He redlined and dropped back.

[00:19:30]But what a run for the young rookie on the Yamaha. This kid's good. My only issue is he looks like he's about 6'3 and he's a pretty big guy. I don't know how long he'll be able to be that good on the 250 class, but he is on the Yamaha, which they have the most power, so we shall see. But Giannis Racialist looking much better. This guy is talented. My favorite guy, Sasha Oh boy. H just mistake after mistake, and it was terrifying. Honestly, I'm just glad he got out of there in one piece, cuz this isn't one of those tracks where you can have the big one and then just hop back on your bike and ride away. That dirt was like concrete.

[00:20:06]Crashes there hurt people. When I'm glad to see him make it through, not do anything stupid. When he was towards the back, I'm like, "Oh man, don't panic.

[00:20:14]Don't go crazy." He got out of there.

[00:20:16]He's not too far behind Simon in the points, but I'll tell you what, they better pay attention. They better start riding good cuz Gian FZ and Cam Mlen, they made up a pile of points on these KTM guys. They want to be in this title fight and it's a long championship. So, they need to turn this around and they need to turn it around fast. All right, guys. Today's member comment is from Easterwood 67. He says, "Cole Davies will dominate outdoors." While I don't think he's going to dominate, he might he could very well drop like raise up to another level if he has the endurance to go for the full 30 cuz he's got the technique and the speed when he was fast as an amateur. He won the Reds against all these same guys and then he came out in the second and third motos and it was hot and he faded. Now, if he can stay strong for both 30 plus two, he might dominate.
