Successful mushroom foraging requires learning to identify key characteristics of different species, such as morel mushrooms growing in clusters and yellow spring coral mushrooms pushing up dirt, while using proper harvesting techniques like cutting stems with a knife to check for worms and assessing mushroom quality by examining density and moisture levels.

Hunting For Morel And Yellow Spring Coral MushroomsHinzugefügt:
Just back here looking for morel mushrooms again. Where are the morel mushrooms?
Got to find them.
Want to see if you could spot the morels.
See all these pine cones?
Yeah.
Okay, now I'm going to point out the morels.
Right there. Three of them.
A cluster. Ha.
I've never found them in a cluster before.
Now I get to get out my my uh bag and start filling the bag.
>> [laughter] >> That's cool. I hope I find a bunch. Um the most I think last year, and I can't remember, it's around 20, maybe 21.
And that's the most I've ever found. But here's the cluster.
Whoop. Lost one.
Took a tumble.
I'll get these cleaned up. I'll leave the roots behind.
Yeah. Here we go.
As I'm looking for these morels, I'm also looking for yellow spring coral mushrooms.
If you see the yellow there, this is exactly how it looked.
They push up dirt. I have a knife ready to go.
But they push up dirt and you just kind of get around them. Now this is a small one, so hopefully these are fresh and good. But I'm just going to pluck the underside.
And then what I do is I take a knife.
I call these cauliflower, just so you know, but these are yellow coral spring mushrooms.
I take a knife and I cut the stem and see if they're wormy.
And this looks pretty good, the density is pretty solid.
So, there you go. I think these are fairly worm-free, but they do stay dirty. They do not They not They don't come out of the ground clean. I don't know if this snow mushroom is edible.
I'm not going to risk it, but I'm going to pluck it to show you.
We call them calves brains.
Anyway, it's right here.
Calves brain.
Or snow snow mushroom, false morel, anyway.
There you go.
Got another calves brain down here.
I'm going to call them calves brains for now.
They're a snow snow mushroom.
But, yeah, we'll we'll research these.
I'm going to keep a few of them, and then if they're edible, we'll we'll see about it. Otherwise, yeah.
Just something to film.
So, I didn't find this one.
But, there's one here in the duff. And then he found another one right here, a little tiny skinny one, and he'll pluck those.
But, I wanted to film them, and then as I'm filming, I'm looking around so I can, you know, take one from him.
>> [laughter] >> I don't see one, though.
Uh I have my brother with me, too, and he just found that one. I still only have three morels.
I'm trying to find a lot more. There's a bunch in a bag.
So, this leafy duff my son put us on to two. My brother put on to one, and I just got this one.
So, [snorts] that's number four for me on this hunt.
That's respectable.
There we go.
So, I do have I do have another find.
It's at the base of this tree, and it was right next to where my son had first found those first two, but it's right there.
So, this is number five for me.
Thanks, William. You me on to some.
I'm going to find out.
Spring coral.
They're bigger.
That's a nice one.
I'll pluck this in a minute. I'm going to go see this other one over here if it is. Oh, here's another one.
Another push up.
There's one over there, too.
Anyway, you've seen how I do this. I'll get these plucked. See if I can keep them.
And there's one there.
Good deal.
That there, what you're looking at, is roughly 8 to 10 lb of just those spring coral mushrooms. Spring coral yellow mushrooms. I call these cauliflower because they look like a cauliflower.
What type of mushrooms are these?
Ew.
By the way, [snorts] if I didn't say it, we're up in Mount Hood National Forest.
Oh, this is a probably form of a Russula, not sure.
The stems are squishy, hollow.
If you know what type of mushroom this is, please post it. Give me a comment.
Again, this is Mount Hood National Forest.
Oh, my brother found a a nice morel.
Can you see it? Yeah, a morel.
I just plucked these. It's right there.
And there is something pushing up right here. Might as well check under it.
Making sure it's not another morel popping up. Nope. Okay.
Good enough. We'll get these cleaned up.
He'll pluck that, and we'll keep searching.
We got some more here. One was found, and another five, I believe, were found, but we got two that aren't cut yet.
And then right there's the other one. I just found number six for me. It's going to be right here.
So, I'm going to break it off.
There's some slight slight seagull in here cuz there was some in here that uh others had found and then I came over to look and sure enough I found one for me.
So, just a matter of finding them and then helping everybody else find.
So, this one here was a little bit old.
Leaving it behind and we're going to leave one behind that's We're early this for somebody else. Look at the tip of my finger. I'm pointing right at it.
It is so tiny.
It's not even a a mouthful. Not even close. Well, my brother found another one.
We moved spots. That's right here. He'll get it and then we'll uh keep look Got another one of these type of mushrooms. It has a hollowed-out ground. There's another one.
Uh get out of this sunlight here.
There they are. I don't know what they are.
They're neat looking though.
Looking around some of these little slash piles to see if we can find some growing in around those. Uh we found out there's been other pickers in here. So, we're going to be looking for the leftover scraps that they uh missed like the one my brother just found.
Here Here we go. Uh got another one. Got number seven.
Uh we just follow on these skitter trails here and trying to find them. Looks like my son found one. I'll video also. So, I'll pluck this one.
And then I'm going to see if I can find it.
He said roughly where it's at. He's looking down pointing.
Oh.
Well, oh I see it. Yep. Right there, which I'll pluck for him just cuz I have it in my hand.
Good deal. We'll get these cleaned up and bag them up. And there's what we got in this little spot.
Just plucked my son's there.
My brother says, "Hey, I'm stepping on one almost."
Right here.
>> [snorts] >> Right there.
Good eye. Good eye. Well, he's got that one.
I guess we have to circle this area because we're finding a few right here.
Well, my brother found another one over here that I haven't found yet.
He found He found that and then he looked around and found this one which he'll pluck right now. I'll get out of the shadowy stuff there. It's right here.
He'll get that one.
I'm going to come up here and see about finding the one that he uh had found.
They camouflage themselves pretty good.
I'm still looking.
There's a pine cone. Oh, it's right here.
It's half buried.
Right there. There it is.
All right. I'll keep looking right in this vicinity.
Number eight.
And yes, I got this one after my son had found a couple more.
I'm not finding them right away.
So, yeah, here we go.
Yet, I found number nine.
Yet again.
All right there.
Yeah, it's kind of dry, too.
Oh, it's really dehydrated.
There you go. It's really lightweight, too.
Number 10 is upon me.
And this one here is moist.
Ground seems like it's wet, like a catch-all for the rain.
Number 11, coming right up.
Right there.
These uh These are not like clumps of five or six. They're just one here, one over there. But, I am fine.
I'm finally I looked down here and found number 12 I thought and 13. Number 12 happened to be a pine cone, but it led me to number 13, but this is actually number 12.
And then when we find one, we all kind of come over and try and seagull each other find some. Well, I found one instead of two. So, this is number 12. My son found some blonde ones right here.
So, I'm going to put this one I just found next to it.
This is like a black morel I call it.
And then here's some blonde ones sitting next each other. That's kind of cool cuz I don't think we found any blonde ones yet.
Number 13 happened to be kicked over, but I did find it. So, there we go. A number 13 and then the blonde ones.
So, black tip.
Blonde.
So, I'm actually on the way back to the car kind of sort of and I found number 14 and 15 and they happened to be blonde.
This is kind of cool. I've I've never found the two varieties if these are indeed varieties. These just might be because they're out here in the open.
So, oh, I got number 16 as a blonde above me.
I'll film that in a second here.
Um but yeah, these are cool.
I got one directly in front of me about see it. Yep, okay. At least that's the one I think you see. Yeah, straight ahead. There's another one over there.
Okay.
Blonde.
Uh my brother found one after seagal-ing me like I want him to do.
So, we got a we got a good pile right here. So, this is did I say 13, 14, 15? This is number 16.
So, cool.
And then he said there's one over here.
Oh, I see it.
I'm going to go down to it if it's why we do this seagal-ing is because if if I he points one out and I go, "There it is."
But it isn't. It was something else and that's an extra mushroom even in that instead, you know what I mean? So, there.
I plucked it for him.
I'm calling this a snipe. I'm sniping it from my son because he was walking by and I seen it and I told him I've got one.
Does he see it yet?
Oh, yeah.
So, he he didn't even see it after I stopped him right there.
Number 17, awesome.
Number 18, right under my son's foot when I was filming this one.
Uh I got to look really hard right here.
There could be some sunk in here.
I do have number 19 if I have done the math right all this time.
Yeah.
Uh right in amongst deer poop.
All right, plucking it.
Waiting for the camera to get turned on.
I did do a kind of a small broad search and I couldn't find anything, but this is nice and fresh and the deer poop was old.
I want to see if I can come in here and do one last hurrah and find uh those last morels I need to break my record from last year. I think it was around 20 or 21 that I found.
So, right now I'm at 19 if I did the math right.
I believe I need to find three or four to break the record. So, last year I come in here where the sunlight is and I I see a baby one. So, I already found one.
Two, there's two next to each other right here.
Might as well pluck them cuz I'm not coming back.
And then from here I searched out in front of me.
So, this is 20 and 21 I believe.
So, can I find one more?
>> [snorts] >> These are tiny, too.
Wow, for breaking my record, this is something else.
You guys want to come in here and uh seagull me?
Find them before I can.
I'll get back to you if I find another one.
Okay, I don't remember the number, but here's two more.
And then one more here.
It's well dried out.
Plucked it. Now, I'm going to sit here and stare.
>> [laughter] >> You got one? Okay.
Son found three more, which could have been my new record, but uh this either ties my record or breaks my record at uh 20 21 22 or something like that. I'm looking slowly cuz I found them in here before.
So, I'm going to come to his three.
Oh, all together.
Okay, see if I find another one just passing him.
So, he found a clump.
Right here.
He found four.
So, there's three that he's seen, but there was a fourth.
Right there. All cool looking.
If that last clip didn't break my record, this clip will.
This is around number 22.
When I do this video, I'll have to have a little a little uh sheet Hope here's another one.
Well, I know I broke my record now. This is cool. These These mushrooms were hard to find earlier today, but I come back to some of my spots and bam, there they are. Oh, I got another one right over here.
>> [laughter] >> So, yeah, we're going to circle this area and keep doing.
Wowzy, wowzy.
All right. That's cool.
I'm going to get back to you on the wrap up here sort of cuz we were getting nearing done. I just wanted to be here to get my record broken.
So, I think I'm at 24, maybe 25 now.
Yeah, we're dealing with a little more yellow coral we added to this, so it's definitely over 10 lb.
There we go. There, I'm just going to guess there's over 40 morel mushrooms there.
This is where I end the video after this car goes by.
