This video demonstrates how game design constraints (such as removing the jump mechanic) can reveal fundamental design flaws in level architecture, while also showcasing player adaptability through alternative strategies like spin dash mechanics and flight abilities. The analysis of 25 Sonic.exe games reveals that approximately 36% (9 out of 25) can be completed without jumping, with the most common obstacles being ledges, pits, and environmental hazards that require vertical movement. Games that reuse classic level designs (like Green Hill Zone) often contain inherent design assumptions that break down when core mechanics are removed, highlighting the importance of designing levels that accommodate diverse player approaches.

How Far Can I Get In EXE Games WITHOUT Jumping? || Sonic.exeAdded:
Today I have a simple but interesting idea. How far can I get in Sonic.exe games without jumping? You see, the original game by Crimson for the most part featured entirely flat levels with the exception of the secret levels. It was practically how the genre of early Exe games became known as walking simulators. These games could be beaten solely by pressing down one arrow key.
But as we know,.exe games have evolved over time and have cranked up everything about the original to 100. So in today's modern.exe world, how far can we get without using the jump button? The rules are very simple. We cannot jump. This, however, does not mean we cannot be midair at all. If a game has a spin dash feature, we are allowed to use that to get midair via slopes or drops. If we manage to get midair by any means other than jumping with a character, we are allowed to use that character's ability.
This mainly applies to Tales's flight mechanic. So, what does constitute as beating an.exe game? In this video, we're going to consider getting to an ending or end of a death route, beating the game. Meaning, let's say if a game has three different death routes, like OMT, if we can get to one of those, I consider the game beaten. This extends to even the worst ending of a storydriven.exe game. Obviously though, we're not allowed to just let ourselves die to spikes or wait out the time to get these deaths, though, because that's pretty much cheating. So, we have about 25.exe games. Maybe I miscounted, maybe I didn't. Around about 25. So, let's go ahead and get started. Let's go ahead and get the obvious ones out of the way, which are the original Sonic.exe game by M Crimson, Sonic.R R, Sonic 2011, and One More Time, as these are all easily beatable without jumping. In fact, they're all practically in the same boat, considering how Sonic.R 2011, and One More Time are practically carbon copies of the original Game by Crimson in level design. You see, for all four, the main game is beatable without jumping. However, the secret levels accessed by going backwards are not beatable without jumping. This brings our jumpless game counter up to four.
Our next game is PC port, which features Lord X. While this is still X, this game does become unbeatable without the usage of jumping. We can still walk down Green Hill and encounter Lord X, but once we get to Angel Island is when the game sadly cuts us off with our restrictions.
At some point, you're supposed to jump over a pit of fire and fly over it. But in this case, we're forced to run directly into the fire, which goes to show how X's game improves over time with him. At least now it requires more than one button to beat the game, which is already better than Sonic Forces.
Okay, so there's actually a lot of.exe games that end up with us getting stuck at the beginning of Green Hill. You see, many.exe fan games reuse Green Hill Zone Act One for good reason. It's a staple across the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The problem with this in our case though is that if we scroll to the right just a little bit past the starting point, we're going to see three ledges where these two crab meat are.
Clearly, we can't jump over these ledges as well. What the hell did you think you were watching? There are actually a lot of games where we just simply get soft locked on the very first section of the game. So, let's go ahead and name all of those real quick.
I'll briefly go over why we get stuck here because the issue is actually slightly different for a few of these games. In Blue Pen Drive, we play as Sonic the Hedgehog using Sonic 1 mechanics. While normally one could use a spin dash to try to progress and get up on this ledge, the original Sonic 1 doesn't have the spin dash, and neither does Blue Pen drive, meaning we can't possibly gain enough momentum to get into the air high enough to pass this area. In Sonic UNL and Sonic UNL remake, we suffer from a very similar case with Tails, as the spin dash is not present, meaning we can't even get into the air to allow us to fly. That and the flight mechanic isn't even present in this game. One more round, though, has a slightly different problem that has to do with the game engine it was made with and the physics it uses. Normally, one could spin dash off of this slope to gain enough momentum and allow us to get airborne and fly. However, in one more round, we simply stick to the ground due to the game engine it was made with. At least, I think that's the reason. In Sally.exe, exe were sadly too short to reach this ring without jumping, which is really disappointing as the rest of this game requires no jumping at all.
Meaning this could have been one of the beatable games without jumping, but this ring had to ruin that for me. In round two, there's sadly a little dip right here that we can't get out without jumping. Pretty self-explanatory.
There's not a whole lot I can do here.
One last round, Knuckles demo has a little ledge towards the start that we simply can't get up. Also, there aren't any slopes, meaning we can't get into the air to glide via a spin dash. In soil acorn, we're going to walk through the level as Amy before being stopped by another ring. This isn't even the first time in this video Amy has let me down by being too short. And lastly, in all three Green Mountain games, were sadly stopped very early on by ledges. There's not much I can do as spin dashing isn't a thing in these games. Fun fact, attempting to spin dash will just result in jumping rather than actually spin dashing. Now, I actually wanted to talk about this one because I'm very surprised. As it turns out, Nightmare Beginning is almost beatable by my conditions without jumping. Almost. As in so goddang close to the point where it's comical. Nightmare Beginning, as you likely know, is a storydriven.exe game with multiple endings and half okay gameplay for a fan game. Sadly though, we cannot save Tails or Eggman, as Tails does not have a flight ability in this game, and jumping through the ring that lets you to escape, well, requires you to jump. Eggman also requires you to jump over this pit to turn off the lower lights, so he's a no-go as well.
Knuckles, however, well, you see, his level doesn't require jumping at all. In fact, his entire gameplay is punching down these walls and shadowy clones of Exeutor while occasionally dashing into a wall to break down the right path.
This will result in having one character alive, which puts us in deadly fog as Sonic, where we see the only survivor die off. This sends us to a hill.
YouTube, please don't demonetize me.
Where we'll stand over some spikes. And this is it. The moment we've been waiting for. The moment where I complete Nightmare Beginning without jumping. Are you kidding me? So, yeah. Because we didn't get fatal fog by saving all three characters and instead got deadly fog, we get the worst ending and not the bad ending in which during the bad ending, we would have been stopped by Tales and Knuckles and thus would not have jumped.
But are you kidding me? Right at the very end, I was so close yet so far. Our next game is Spirits of Hell, which begins pretty smoothly as we literally just have to walk on flat land as Tails.
Nothing out of the ordinary. No jumping required. We then choose to fly away before we get teleported to a burning Angel Island zone. And oh, god damn it.
Spirits of Hell is not beatable without jumping. Now, our next game is Eye of Three. Now, I actually tested all three characters on this. At the beginning of Sally's level, there's a few spikes in our way that we have just enough rings to power through with eye frames, but sadly, we're stopped by a godamn we straight up just can't even get 30 seconds in Amy's level. And trust me, I tried. I was even willing to excuse myself if I used her ability to get up ledges, which happens to boost you up a smidge, but even that wasn't enough. And then Cream's level just stops us yet again with a wall. There's nothing we can do here. So, I have three is not beatable without jumping. I did have another idea because this does count as an.exe game, and you can win a match.
So, I then set out to beat a match of outcome memories without jumping. So, if you believe in my ability to have done it, you can skip right here in the video. Otherwise, I'm going to play the whole match here on four times speed, so there's no debate on whether or not I actually did it.
Heat. Heat. N.
This brings our jumpless game counter up to six. Okay, so I'm editing here. Just know, yeah, I miscounted. The actual jumpless game counter is one less than whatever I say it is for the rest of the video. I don't know how I did that. Next is the one last round Tales demo. Now, this we actually managed to see some progress in. This level does take place in Green Hill Zone, act one. However, I managed to spin dash off of this slope, which allows me to fly through the air without jumping. Now, the hard part is making sure I land somewhere where there is a ledge to spin dash off of to continue doing this little trick.
Thankfully, we manage to keep doing this until we encounter OMT. And then the level sort of changes from here. Once more, we pretty much just have to ledge Tails glide our way to the end. And then once we reach this tunnel, that's pretty much it because then we just got to go get our body completely brutalized and eaten by OMT. Now, this is actually one of the few.exe games we can actually beat without jumping. This will bring our jumpless game counter up to seven.
Though, that's not the end of OMT yet, as we still have Repixel to discuss. Our run in Repixelled starts the same for the most part with us mainly just using ledges to fly to areas of the map after spin dashing off of them. But once we encounter OMT is when things get pretty interesting. We'll get our eye torn out and then we'll be sent to hell zone. A zone filled with enemies, traps, water that slowly kills you. Everything designed to be well, hell. The main goal of this level is to reach the end without running out of rings. Your ring count will slowly drain by the second, and getting caught by any traps or enemies will decrease your ring count.
These main enemies are the biggest problem as we can't avoid most of these due to their nature of well being on the ground. Sadly, we really can't get that far. At least if we're not trying to jump at all. Very disappointingly, this is where we likely have to call it here, as this level likely isn't possible without jumping due to the sheer amount of enemies you'd have to get hit by to get through it all. The next game on our list here is Sonic. ribs. And thankfully, we play as Tails in Green Hill Zone, which allows us to use our little ledge spin dash trick to fly around the map. For a while, it goes really well, and we manage to make it to good old Ribs himself before we get put into a recolored green hill zone. The same trick is still applicable here, so we use it to the best of my advantage, flying around once more as the map changes. Though, this time, something a little weird happens. My ability to fly is taken away. Very conveniently for us though, no matter what I do or how high I fly up prior to having my flight taken away, we always land in between these two rocks. The worst part is just beyond this rock is flat land for the rest of the level. Sadly, this is as far as we get, even with using our flying trick.
Our next game to talk about is EYX. Eye here in our favor uses Tales in Green Hill Zone Act One along with it being made by a game engine that allows us to get into the air with the slope at the start. The pattern is very similar to some of the other games. We essentially just have to keep landing on ledges where we can spin dash. Soon enough, after a lot of flying, we'll see himself and he'll run back to the beginning. A little issue I had here where I thought I was kind of cooked was with this little section where I have to fly to the top. I originally thought I couldn't make it to the top, but then I remembered the platforms leading up to it. So, I just have to keep spamming the flight trick yet again. We'll then just kind of have to sit around as we watch Ray die until we get put into a cutscene. as Sonic in which now we have to find some way to beat Crystal Lake without jumping. I truly do wonder how possible this is. God damn it. Sadly, this is where we stop for EYX. We made it sort of far, about a third into the game, maybe halfway. So, this one is sort of a joke game, but Sonic.exe is one I wanted to include here, and it's pretty much just a copy of Sonic.exe by Crimson, but Sonic. Regardless, we get past this one pretty easily. This brings our jumpless game counter up to eight. I did want to mention the destiny really quick, but sadly we're stopped very early on by a ledge, and there's nowhere here where we can gain momentum to fly upwards without jumping. So sadly, we barely even start. Sonic 2017 is up, and this game is really just trying to reach the end without 2017X jumping you. They do give you the flight mechanic as Tails, so you'd think we'd be all good, right? Sadly, the flight mechanic really sucks in this game and really only slows down your descent. I tried everything here, but it just wouldn't be possible to get into the air without falling down and dying. So sadly, this game is impossible without jumping. Our last game is Sonic.exe Project X. We pretty much have to do the same tail strategy as always to get past most of Green Hill until we see Exender. Once we do, he'll charge at us and the map will change. I did have to traverse this area very carefully in order to progress, and it did take me a few tries. This is because there's a very tiny ledge here that we can use to activate our flight and get over these spikes. Once we do so, we're going to spin dash down this tunnel and be greeted with a malformed Knuckles who will slowly crawl over to us before the screen cuts to black. And then we'll get some sort of neat sprite art of Knuckles who presumably ate us. This counts as we've reached a death screen and one of the endings of the game. Therefore, Sonic.exe Exe Project X is beatable without jumping, meaning our jumpless game counter goes up to nine. Nine games out of 25 are beatable without jumping.
This is a pretty good number, even if we're factoring in the fact that half of them were walking simulators on flat land. I actually did have quite a bit of fun doing this in all honesty, despite the fact that some of these were genuinely so annoying. But yeah, have a great day everyone. Make sure to like and subscribe.
