The RMS Titanic, launched in 1912 as the largest and most luxurious ship of its time, sank on April 14th after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic, killing 1,500 of 2,200 passengers and crew; the disaster was caused by inadequate lifeboat capacity (only half the passengers), failure to respond to distress signals from the nearby ship Californian, and the ship's slow sinking process that allowed passengers to believe it was safe, resulting in 76 survivors and 1,500 deaths in a single night.

I Took a Boat Ride Through TitanicAdded:
Today we remember Titanic and dive into the night of April 14th, 1912. The largest, the most luxurious, the most reliable ship of its time and the legendary film Titanic directed by James Cameron in 1997, the movie that brought this story back to life.
Cameron was obsessed with Titanic since childhood. To make the film, he dove to the real wreck 33 times, 4,000 m below the surface of the Atlantic.
The opening shots of the ship on the ocean floor are real footage filmed by Cameron himself. He said he wanted to make the film just to see the wreck with his own eyes.
Cameron didn't just want to tell a love story. He wanted to recreate the ship down to the last detail. The dishes, the carpets, even the cigarettes, all authentic to 1912. The set was a near full-size replica of Titanic. And he flooded it with 65 million L of water.
That night, the Atlantic was calm, the sky full of stars, the water -2° C. Most people didn't drown. They froze to death in 15 minutes. Of 2,200 souls on board.
Only 76 survived on 500 lives lost in a single night.
Titanic had lifeboats for only half the passengers. The law said it was enough.
The first lifeboat launched was half empty. People didn't believe the ship could sink even as it was sinking.
Titanic took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink at first slowly, almost gently.
Then the bow went under and the stern rose into the sky. The ship broke in two with a sound people described as the end of the world.
The light stayed on almost until the very last second, then darkness and silence.
One night on set, something strange happened. 80 crew members ended up in the hospital, laughing, crying, hallucinating. Someone had spiked the lobster chowder with PCP. Cameron himself ate it.
He made himself throw up before it hit him. To this day, nobody knows who did it or why.
And here's another fact. Kate Winslet spent weeks filming in freezing water.
She caught pneumonia and almost drowned when her coat got stuck on a gate. She still finished the scene.
Titanic had three classes on board.
Third class, bunk beds, shared bathrooms, simple food. Mostly immigrants heading to America for a new life. Second class, comfort without luxury, like a good hotel. First class, private suites, marble baths, dinners with caviar and champagne. A first class ticket cost as much as a house.
A first class dinner on Titanic was an 11 course feast. It was where the richest people in the world gathered every evening to dine, to gossip, to be seen.
But that night, the ocean didn't care about class. Everyone drowned the same way.
Benjamin Guggenheim, one of the richest men on board, changed into his best evening suit as the ship was sinking. He said, "We've dressed up in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen."
And he drank brandy on the deck and waited for the end.
That night, eight distress rockets were fired from Titanic. White flares exploding silently in the freezing sky.
Another ship saw them, the Californian, just 10 miles away. Her captain decided they didn't look like distress signals. He went back to sleep. By morning, 1,500 people were dead.
Titanic sank long ago, but her story still lives in our hearts. Thank you for being with us.
