The Agreement That Changed Tibet ForeverAdded:
Was it a peaceful liberation or the loss of a nation's independence?
High in the Himalayas, Tibet had long preserved its own culture, religion, and traditions. [music] For decades after the fall of China's Qing Dynasty, Tibet governed [music] itself with varying levels of independence. But by the late 1940s, a new government had emerged in People's Republic of China.
In 1950, Chinese forces entered Tibet saying they intended to reunify the territory with China. Negotiations followed between Chinese and Tibetan representatives. On May 23rd, 1951, both sides signed what became known as the 17-point agreement. China described it as the peaceful liberation of Tibet, but many Tibetans argued the agreement was signed under pressure and marked the beginning of tighter Chinese control.
