When troubleshooting a vehicle starter system, systematic voltage testing and component isolation are essential diagnostic methods; a healthy alternator should produce 14+ volts when the engine is running, and a battery reading of 12.5V is insufficient for starting, requiring either jump-starting or extended charging to reach the 13.5V minimum threshold needed for starter engagement.

Fixing the starter kind of Day...Added:
[snorts] >> This is what I found, guys. Here's the problem.
It burnt right off.
I don't know if you can see that.
>> I don't have the right thread size, so it's stripping the nut.
Uh yeah.
I think I'm going to put another a bigger nut on.
So >> [snorts] >> Yeah, let me grab a couple watches.
>> All right, so I didn't have the right bolt.
So You see right there, I put a brass shim that I had for my old uh Mercury Capri door shim.
So that should work.
Let's go find out. I probably blew the solenoid up cuz it didn't have a ground.
But we'll see.
>> What the >> What?
Hot.
Mhm.
Mhm.
>> Come on.
>> [snorts] >> Mhm.
>> [snorts] >> And uh good morning everyone.
We still live? Hey guys, uh I just checked.
I only got 12.5 in the battery. So, I don't want to uh take that starter out cuz it it may be good. It's it's clicking a lot better. I just think uh 12.5 is not enough to start it, maybe.
So, hm.
I'm going to What I'm going to do is I'm going to uh jump start it. Let it charge for a while.
Get it [snorts] up to like 13, see if it'll start.
Uh let's see.
All right.
Anyone chatting? Anyone here? Who started getting installed? Yeah.
All right, guys.
Anyone see or I see we we just buffered, so.
Hey, thanks. Sorry uh I didn't say good morning. So, good morning.
Broke my selfie stick today.
What up, one in the chat?
If you hear me, please.
Cleaned up the All right, I had a new I had a new starter.
New belt, new battery, new all.
Put in my van.
This is the Uh, ran for a few days, okay. Then the all good.
Being brand new wasn't strong enough.
Yeah.
Uh.
Yeah, it could be my uh Trying to think.
Yeah, maybe because uh the starter wasn't connected, made the connection from the I don't know.
I don't know, but yeah, probably new alternator is not a bad idea. I'll have two of everything then.
The ignition switch next to my This Mopar might The ignition switch next ID says may have burnt out while in Florida. The ignition switch. Ah.
All right, so that means I can jump start it.
But I probably need a new ignition switch. Got you.
Well, no, I didn't I listened to my radio on my um I never used the accessories cuz I ran it off of my power station.
My solar power station.
But I did charge that up whenever I ran the battery, so shouldn't the alternator be able to charge both of those at the same time?
Maybe that's the issue.
It was charging my battery pack and trying to charge my other battery at the same time.
He says I'd say got one of the best alternators as far as Okay.
As I said, I like to have uh two of everything in case something breaks. I like to always have a backup so I don't have to wait days to be stranded here.
And I I've replaced the battery. I've replaced the starter, the battery, um yeah.
But not the alternator.
I did I replaced the pump for the AC.
But yeah, that alternator looks pretty you know, dirty and uh yeah, actually I I need to do a test to see how much it's putting out.
If it's putting out 14 plus, then I know it's good.
Yeah.
Ah, that's a good idea, Mopar.
Yep. All right, let's do that then, guys.
We're going to do what he said. We're going to jump-start it.
Then we're going to see how many volts are running through the system.
Yep.
Thank you, sir.
I got to get you guys planted in the ground cuz my selfie stick broke.
>> [groaning] >> I don't know how long we were gone, guys.
But, um I just tested it. It's 14.33.
So, that's putting out more than enough.
So, I'm going to let it charge for a while.
And we'll go from there. Hopefully that starter Actually, what I'm going to do is I'm going to shut it off and see if it clicks more in a couple minutes. That way it'll tell me that I need to take it for a long ride to charge up the battery and that the starter is good now. Let's hope so. Fingers crossed.
I can't [snorts] really read the chat.
Um [Β __Β ] No, it's putting No, D. It's putting out 14.
Uh 14.33, I think it was.
Um I had 12.5 to begin with.
Put a one if if you can hear me. I just noticed that the it's shut off, but are we still here, guys?
Uh Uh good news is I can still push that in.
Uh I don't see the chat move, guys. Let me uh put it on that. Okay, here we go.
14 3 3 Uh 1 1. All right, so 14 3 3, that's good to go. I don't need a alternator.
When it rains, it pours.
Where did I Where did I see that?
Yeah, D, I hear you.
Okay, it was buffering bad.
Uh the wire that connects from starter to the battery may be bad. Check that wire. Okay, D.
Um no, it it's clicking, so that should be good.
But maybe you're right. Uh I've got a 25 amps.
It never changes about 14 volts. It has two batteries.
Amps 500.
Well, I got the 14 3 3. Not quite 14 4, but All right. Good morning, uh Boston Mike.
What's the one for if you guys can hear me?
So, then probably have a short somewhere.
What's the temperature out there? It's not too bad. I don't know, it's probably 60s.
Look up Houlton, Maine.
Do you miss Florida? Yes.
Welcome help.
>> [snorts] >> Human help.
All right, so I'm going to do a little test.
I'm going to shut it off and see what we got. See if it's charging at all. It's got to be charging, right? I'm going to shut it off, test the battery, see if it went up from five 12.5 and that'll tell me if it if the alternator is charging the battery or the battery is defective cuz it's putting out enough amperage.
>> All right, I got 13 1 9.
So, it is charging the battery.
>> [snorts] >> Uh 13 It should start it at 13. So, I I'm going to say it's either the switch or the starter. We're going to put the new starter in. Hopefully, we don't short anything out.
Um Wait a minute.
Let me double-check this.
I don't know if you guys can see that.
All right, we got 13 1 4.
Well, with the ignition off, would it matter?
All right, I'll do that.
>> [snorts] >> The ignition's off. Yep.
>> It don't give you much room.
>> [snorts] >> 13 1 I got 13 1.
So, it is charging.
13 1 maybe not enough to start it though.
So, I need to charge it some more guys.
I'll go to the store.
Then I'll go for a long ride.
And go from there.
All right.
>> [sighs] >> And the starter's still Yeah, I guess it's pretty tight. All right.
So, that should start.
Ah, all right.
>> [snorts] >> Yeah, it's the ignition switch.
I hate to put the new starter in and have the same issue, so before I do that, I'm going to charge it up.
Um Yeah, cuz it was charged at 14 3 3 to 4 14 2 9 to 14 3 3.
And I think Yeah, it went up to from 12 5 to 13 1, so I think you need 13 5 to start it.
I'm going to research that, I guess.
>> [snorts] >> But Is this the car that drove all the way from Florida? Yeah, it is.
Yep.
Uh, so that looks a little better there. I covered my wheeler. I covered the uh the my wagon.
Hey, Lady Wiser.
I'm doing well. I don't know how the chat's doing. I've been busy working on my car and just showing the process.
Uh Last things I love I I got to find my other selfie stick.
This one broke.
It was cheap, man. I knew it was junk when I bought it.
I think I put my I think I saved my other one.
As I say, I like to have two of everything, so I'm pretty sure I didn't throw that away.
I just have to see if I put it in here.
There it is.
I got to put everything back or I'll or I'll lose it.
>> [snorts] >> All right, I'm going to switch you guys over.
This is why I don't throw anything out.
Uh thank you ATG.
You got a You got really good service here. I'm surprised you have service at all. Well, up the road about a mile and a half, 2 miles, I have no service. So, yeah, I'm right at the edge of where the service stops.
>> [groaning] >> Rest in peace, selfie stick.
Yep, that's so cheap compared to the cheap one I have.
I think that was like $7 or something.
>> [snorts] >> Yep.
I have so many projects. I got to figure out how to get my little water up the hill. It worked the first time and now I got to research why it's not pumping anymore.
>> [snorts] >> Yep.
I think I'm going to move all that stuff right there.
It's an eyesore. Even that eventually I want to tear down that shed.
Get rid of that. Get rid of this and get an Amish house.
That's the plan.
Yeah.
I'm a mechanic.
I did the homework on the problem. I put time in. Told him weeks ago what the issue was and he ignored me.
You have Take care, Red.
I forgot what you said was the problem, though.
Funny you say that. Um her friend Mike just called me this morning, woke me up.
He's like, "I don't know who this is, but I I found your number in my phone."
You know who I am, [Β __Β ] idiot. I says I says, "Uh I hope your friend gets her stuff out. I can't guarantee how long it's going to be there cuz uh I don't even told I don't even know if I told him I'm up in Maine."
Check the connections from the battery to stator. Make sure your wire isn't broken.
All right, Mopar.
I know when you say stator, you talk about the um solenoid.
Yeah, that's what I thought you meant.
Well, I tested it. It's getting the same volts.
Oh, no, I didn't test that.
I tested the volts that go to the alternator. It's the same that's coming out of the battery, so yeah, I'll do that.
I'll run a from the ground to the power side on the starters. Make sure I'm that wire is good. I like that. Yeah.
>> [snorts] >> All right.
Let me do that now.
>> [groaning] [snorts] >> See if this thing will stand up on its own.
>> All right, guys.
I'm going to wrap it up with a couple minutes.
You guys want to say your goodbyes.
Uh hoping to give you a an update later on success. I think I want to be able to get this started today.
I got till next Thursday anyway.
Then I got to work on the wheeler and so many other projects.
So.
So last year I planted grass.
And you can see the like crab grass.
But that real fine grass is some Kentucky grass.
So hopefully that'll spread and fill in everything.
Uh thank you uh young young propane.
Hey, John Deere in the house.
All right, guys. We got, uh, we're going to have success today. I I I feel it. I feel it.
Put the new starter in, charge up the battery, and I'm good to go.
And then, I'm going to jump-start after I fix that. I'm going to run a pair of jumper cables, try to charge up my ATV ATV battery, and then get that running.
So, that is the goal.
Yes, uh, All right, guys. So, as I always end my show, be kind everyone.
Even you, Red Hornet. Surprise, people.
Come back with peace and love, man.
Wouldn't that be a beautiful day?
I appreciate all your help, everyone here, your support.
Thank you, Ed Wood.
I lost you earlier, where Uh, sorry about that.
Afternoon.
4:20.
All right. Peace and love.
We'll talk real soon. Peace.
