The film masterfully navigates the boundary between nostalgic camp and high-budget spectacle, offering a rare instance of a franchise embracing its roots without irony. It is a polished exercise in brand loyalty that prioritizes visual fidelity and star power over complex deconstruction.

Masters of the Universe Premiere First Impressions: No Spoilers!本站添加:
Okay, I am back from a whirlwind of a trip where I got to walk the purple carpet and experience the world premiere of the Masters of the Universe movie in LA. So, I I'm still kind of glowing from all of the like experential parts of it, but I wanted to, you know, document my spoilerfree thoughts of the Masters of the Universe movie that we got to see in LA on Monday at Grommen's or I guess TCL TCL's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. you know, maybe maybe that's could have influenced uh my experience with the film. So, you can you can take whatever I say with a grain of salt. You can say, "Oh, Jay, well, you only like the movie because uh you they did all this stuff for you."
That very well may be true, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the film spoiler-free, though. Um, and I'm sure there's going to be spoilers that are out there, but the and I I will do like a spoiler review when the movie actually comes out, but I at least wanted to share uh my my initial takes on the film. And they really in the simplest forms, I loved it. I I thought it was a ton of fun. The Masters of the Universe is such a unique property, right? It has so many uh great colors and fantastical characters and and locations and vehicles and beasts and it's kind of all over the place in terms of its influences, right? It's not just like, you know, sword and sorcery, Conan barbarian stuff. There's also like tech influences and, you know, just so many things kind of put in a melting pot and out come all of these crazy absurd characters. And I think the the one thing I love the most about this movie is it doesn't shy away from any of that.
It's all there. It's very colorful. It's not drab. Uh and all of those charact like Fisto and Mecca neck and um you know the ones you've seen in the trailer. I don't want to spoil any maybe that you haven't seen, but all the ones that you've seen in the trailer are true to the characters as you know them, right? I've seen a lot of kind of early take reviews saying it's like it is the filmation show come to life as a modern movie, right? And it was just so much fun. Like most of the time I had a big old smile on my face. Is it perfect? No.
I think in some points the pacing kind of felt a little slow but never too long. There was only one moment was like, "Okay, I'm kind of it feels a little like it's lagging a little bit, but then immediately kind of picked right back up again." And really that the last act of the film is just nonstop and it was great. It was so great. And that I don't want to give too much more than that. I just I really loved the whole back half last act of the movie.
Um the first act I dug too like setting up the universe I thought was was great.
I think it's going to be really impactful for kids too. Um especially you know smaller kids. Um and then the Earth sequences. Everybody everyone's worried about the Earth stuff taking too long or being too much on Earth. It's very quick. It's kind of like get in, get out as quick as possible. People have asked me like how much run time. I don't know, like maybe 10 minutes, maybe 15 minutes. Then it gets to Eternia pretty darn quick. It also gets to, you know, the him being He-Man pretty quick.
There's also maybe concern like, oh, maybe he doesn't actually become He-Man till the very end of the movie. Like, no, he gets there, but there's a lot of learns and and he's still kind of becoming He-Man. Um, and uh, you know, Nicholas Gallina, who plays He-Man, I think did a wonderful job. Honestly, most of the cast is phenomenal, but I think that the the top two and I I I've said like I'm worried about Jared Leto being in the movie or whatever, but Jared Leto Skeletor so good. It's so good. Uh, it's the I will say like the voice is unique. It's not like the filmation, right? It's not the Alan Oppenheimer voice. but it doesn't lose any of Skeletor's campiness and just pure evilness. Um, there are times at least in the theater I had it was had kind of the bane effect where it was hard to track, but for the most part the the voice the the actual physical performance of the character.
He he may have stolen the show. Uh, it's really good. And then Allison Brie as Evil in like pitch perfect. Pitch perfect. Absolutely loved it. Um, Idris Ela as Duncan, so freaking good. Um, Camila Mendes as Tila, she was phenomenal. Again, Nick Gallatin played the part perfectly. Like it, uh, a lot of no notes going on in terms of like the characters, how they're presented and how, you know, we got to interpret them. Uh, the editing, the pacing, the special effects, uh, Travis Knight, the action sequences, like we saw some of those at Cineacon. They were all executed really, really well. and just honestly and kept going. I was LIKE, "OH, WHOA." There was just a lot of like escalations were just kept going that you don't experience in the trailers and just the set pieces and everything are so well thought out. It was really good.
And I could even tell from the first those those sequences that we saw at Cineacon, those same all those scenes were still there, but I could tell they tightened up the editing as well. was a little the pace was a little bit snappier than uh those scenes you saw at Cineacon, which maybe because the score was actually there, which will then get to my next point. I love the score. It's so good.
Like I I I found myself after the movie just singing the themes from the movie and not just like, you know, the He-Man classic theme, but just the uh the the themes that have been built out for this film. And you'll probably feel the same way. Uh, and then the Brian May guitar, like it's very it felt very Queen Flash Gordon influence in all of the right ways. It was so good. Um, so again, I'm I'm I don't want to get into too much more, but there's one last thing, and I will not spoil what these things are, but there are, at least as we saw it, multiple kind of postmov scenes. So, there's like kind of an early credit, a mid-redit, and an end credit.
and they're all phenomenal. A lot of times there's going to be kind of throwaways.
Every single one of them were awesome. And that's all I'll say.
Uh, and they also got huge reactions.
The reactions were so large that I didn't actually fully hear or fully kind of like uh understand or absorb uh the scenes while they happen. It's It was kind of like an immediate like, "God, I wish I could have hit replay real fast." Uh because the reactions were so strong. Um but they're really cool. So definitely stick around for that. So overall, love the film. Really excited to see it again. And I'm excited for you all to get to see it as well.
And I hope people show up to this thing because I I think we've all lamented the fact that cool new movies are are kind of hard to come by these days, right?
It's all and I know Master is an existing IP, but this feels like something we haven't gotten in a while, right? Like a true8s just fun action movie that has heart, that has humor, has camp. Like it's campy in the best ways, not in a corny way.
And I I I and I I applaud Mattel and Amazon MGM for swinging for the fences and not shying away from anything that makes Masters of the Universe awesome because it's it it's risky in today's movie industry in today's market. Like MGM, I just saw Sheep Detectives too. That's a risky play, but it was so refreshing to go see that movie uh in theaters. Also has Nick Gallaine in it. uh He-Man and and this feels similar like God this is such a I I I'm so grateful that a lot of money was spent to make this film and I I hope they rewarded for taking these chances. Um and I hope you all if you're even interested or remotely interested in seeing this film, go see it in theaters. Go buy your tickets. Uh because it's it's I think it's I think it's special. I think it's fun. We haven't gotten something like this. We don't get this too often. maybe early Marvel is what I would kind of compare the the experience to.
So, yeah, there you go. There's my thoughts. Uh I will definitely have, you know, a more spoiler uh version review uh in the future, but I at least wanted to capture my non my spoiler-free uh takes for you all to share with you. uh and and more stuff to come. Uh there, you know, any live stream stuff talking more about just the the overall experience and there'll be more content related to the movie uh dropping as well. Um and and more toy reviews like they they gave us the the the Mattel um power sword. That's freaking awesome. Uh so stay tuned to the channel, hit subscribe and the bell icon so you don't miss anything. And until next time, asalego and goodbye.
