New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is advocating for the state to move its Democratic presidential primary earlier on the national calendar, which would require agreement from the Democratic National Convention and state legislative approval, potentially impacting the 2028 presidential race by giving New Mexico a larger voice in national politics and requiring candidates to address border state issues like immigration.

New Mexico’s governor pushes for earlier Democratic presidential primary本站添加:
earlier.
Prepare earlier. Hold those voters. Keep those voters.
>> It's a push to give New Mexico a bigger voice when it comes to national politics. The governor, speaking to the Democratic National Convention, explaining what New Mexico has to offer.
>> We can't just have tailwinds and call it good.
What New Mexico wants to bring to the table is we can create our own tailwinds over and over and over again.
>> The governor is pushing for earlier primaries in the state, at least for the Democratic Party. Two things need to happen in order for this to take place.
>> First, and the governor and folks from out here in New Mexico are obviously working on the first half of that, which is getting the Democratic Party, essentially the Democratic National Convention, to agree to have this happen.
>> Next, the state legislature would have to pass the measure. This would not impact the Republican Party because the same process needs to take place for them. If approved, this would impact the 2028 presidential race with more of a voice for the state.
>> This it will generate a lot of excitement in New Mexico. We'll have candidates from all all of the um candidates running for president will be coming to New Mexico. Rural towns, urban towns, the rural communities. I think it's just it's putting New Mexico on the map.
>> One advantage is New Mexico's proximity to the border, a hot topic across the political spectrum.
>> New Mexico would be the only border state among states on the early side of a primary. So, candidates would have to test their messaging, what does their policy platform look like on immigration in a state like New Mexico that's a border state.
