The COOLEST Things We Saw At OPEN SAUCE 2026!!!
Added:[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Well, Welcome to the 2026 Open Sauce Convention. That's right, for the fourth year in a row, Bot Bash is back here along with Scorpios and the Battlebots.
Uh, one unfortunate thing this year is the fire marshall shut down uh the robot area. So, the hockey tournament got turned into just watching the FIFA World Cup, but we still had a pretty good time. But please understand, that's why you don't see a lot of robot fighting footage in this video.
But creators from all around the world, a bunch of different YouTube channels all showed up to show off their really cool projects. And I did want to take some time to highlight a few of them here. In fact, one project, and I know a lot of people are hoping to see the fight between Tiny Tombstone and the Sting Kit. Unfortunately, that did get delayed as well. However, Ray and I did take the arena off campus and we did do something. So, let's check that out. Hey there, Builder Blog. So, I know I promised you guys a battle with this guy.

And since Turbos provided me this nice portable arena, even though Open Sauce will not let us fight robots inside anymore, we are outside of Open Sauce.

>> All right. So, here we have a little bit of a unique bristlebot. It name is Double Dutch. Most bristlebots go where they want to go. However, this one, although the although the weapons share one motor, so they all turn together, they can change the angle of the bristles so that you can control and go forward or back or left or right.
>> Oh, very cool.
>> Have you uh this is in plants, right? Uh how you >> This is a plant. So, it's a one lb plastic. No metal weapons. However, this one because of the bristles gets weigh 1.5 lbs. Oh, >> the other interesting thing is um getting the right amount of vibration is difficult. So rather than designing it correctly, I just drilled holes until it vibrated about the right amount.
>> Oh, that's one way to do it. Okay.
>> Not the best way, not a good way, but it worked.
>> That's what's important, I guess.
>> Yep.
>> How much of the weight is in the weapon?
>> I don't remember. It's uh the weapons are very very heavy for a weight class.
Uh I don't remember the the weight unfortunately. Oh, one more interesting thing. If you'll notice here, there are no layer lines for it to split on because every piece has been printed flat on the bed.

>> So that it doesn't break. This chassis has been through six competitions without repair.
>> Oh wow. That's pretty tough.
>> Yeah. So it's extra extra durable. H.
>> Yeah. Usually see a lot of destruction in plastic gans, but very impressive for something to last that long.

>> Now, it lost because it got tipped and got stuck, but it was not. But the damage is almost nothing.

Are all those marks and stuff from all the the beater bars?
>> Yes, those are from those are from other people trying to hit me.

And does the roll cage uh you said you got stuck on the side. Is the roll cage supposed to help it to roll back on its side?
>> It's supposed to, but it doesn't work very well.

He's been working on the for the last 10 years. It's been kind of a learning project, a personal project to learn robotics and engineering and and kind of go in the deep end.
>> Well, I have to say that thing is damn impressive.
>> So the um the most difficult part was these arms were aluminum casting process.

>> Spark Blocks is just a simple electronic system that's embedded in Lego compatible blocks.

From LEDs to motors to speakers and sound, this kit comes with everything you need to learn about what you can achieve.
>> So what is it? It's playful. It's fun.
And it is advanced when you get up to higher levels. So at this low level, beginning level, you can't go wrong. You can't do anything that's going to hurt the system. So kids and parents can experiment. And once we get more advanced, we get into transistors, resistors, capacitors, and this is a robot that naturally runs away from life.
And this can be built with the expansion kit in the intro kit. In addition, to make things easy with the kits, we've embedded most of the electronics into the intro kit and then we've added add-on kits. Now, these are just an idea. Just all the bricks come in the add-on kit, but imagine what you could build with a direct drive motor coming to you.

And if you pull it pretty far forward, then it will start going.

It's just hard to see sometimes because it's not like fast.

>> Uh yes, I can I can probably get it moving a little bit faster. Uh but I don't have the faster I move it though.
What's more likely it is that I like mirrors on where I'm moving in operation. Um >> all right.
>> 3 2 1 It's semi-automatic.
>> And actually, we have a three uh three burst shot programmed in as well. Now, hit it again.
>> It's a three round burst.
>> Wow. Very cool.
>> So, uh tell us a bit about this thing.
So what we're doing is we are shooting these uh steel valves just straight from coming and so what we do is we have a solenoid that just kicks them out of the chain just adds a little bit of energy to get into the first uh field. So we're dumping power straight from these lipos through these MOSFETs and into the coils. As the projectile passes the first coil or actually passes the first gate, we turn this foil off and then turn this one on.
>> Yeah.
>> As it clears this gate, we turn this one off.
>> Why do you need to do that?
>> Uh so that way we keep uh because the projectile is going to be attracted to the middle of the coil.
>> And so we don't want to pull the projectile backwards. So we turn them on in sequence in order to ensure it always gets both.
>> So if you do that three times?
>> Yeah, we have a three Yeah, we have three stages.
What kind of currents are you pulling?
>> So, we're pulling about 500 amps uh at 48 volts.
>> Wow.
>> But we're only doing that for about uh 15 milliseconds. So, you can see the the coil timing right here.
>> That's the launch button.

>> Yeah. Where where should I if I take a slowmo of this area the best place I think are more like It's making it way over to the cups right now.
This is actually a version two. We had a version one last year, but we've made a lot of big improvements. One of them being we made it we made it bigger. So, it feels like a vendetting machine.
>> We still got some rough edges as you see here. Here we have to kind of shake the cup to get it to fall.
>> Uhoh. Do it six times just to make sure.
>> We got to make sure the cup is there. So we just shake it some more.
>> We have to put a sensor in the kitchen to >> Yeah, we should. So actually we do have a weight sensor on the clock, but it's rubbing.
>> So we just proximity sensor or something.
All the toppings are kind of different consistencies.
This one tends to clump up as you see there, but sometimes there is definitely compact it. um that actually get more complex.
This is also something new.
Yeah. Um but you know we would you would instead of having like water you already have some simple ideas like the for example you know very zero mechanical engineers in our team which is a All right. So, there you go. There would be your uh your mama if uh if you could eat it. But unfortunately, you cannot eat it. You can take a picture. Take a picture. You don't have a health permit.

>> I I make like just a lot of weird stuff in general. Like I've got a a giant wearable croc hat >> like that. Yeah. I I just like when I started 3D printing things, I don't like making like just trinkets that are going to sit on a shelf. I like to have interactive stuff and I'm inspired by making a lot of things based on toys that I had when I was a kid. So, there's a lot of nostalgia stuff. But at some point last year, I made my first lightsaber and I was like, "Oh, oh, oh, this is this is this is the greatest thing ever. I'm going to have to like this is the only thing that I want to do now." So, I I've made a whole bunch of those.
