Cumulus clouds form when warm air over land heats up faster than water over Lake Erie, creating thermals that rise and reach the lifted condensation level, producing puffy clouds; this meteorological process, combined with high pressure systems and temperature patterns, helps forecasters predict weather conditions including frost potential and precipitation timing.

Craig's Afternoon weather forecastAdded:
From your weather authority, here's meteorologist Craig Clark. Good afternoon. This is a pretty cool shot looking south from the top of our TV tower and always something interesting when you look up at the sky. So, those big billowing puffy cumulus clouds, the land can heat up much faster than the water then over Lake Erie. So, you have these little thermals that form and as they rise, they reach what's called the lifted condensation level in the atmosphere and it's like Jiffy Pop Popcorn. You can see those puffy friendly clouds out there.
Uh temperature now in the 50s, low 50s at Erie with a north wind at 9. So, it's like low to mid 50s today and then frosty tonight. I think there's a better chance for uh frost for many uh tonight. You You have to be like right up against Lake Erie to avoid it. 62 is some wet weather Wednesday, little cooler Thursday and then off and running into the weekend, mid 60s Friday, mid 70s by this weekend.
Memorial Day just 2 weeks away and then Father's Day and summer coincide this year. 41 more days and then America 250, we celebrate the big birthday in 54 days. Now, we just need the weather to act like it and you know what? Look at the warmth starting to build here across much of these United States and we're going to start to see this uh kind of shove north and east over the uh Great Lakes. Another shot of visible satellite imagery using the sun's light to show you just about every cloud that's in the sky. So, we were just talking about those puffy cumulus clouds developing uh and then also of note, uh really cool on the visible, you get what's called a lake shadow because the air over the lake is stable. Look at it. It is sunny basically right along the Thruway and the 90 corridor. Out a little bit wider, high pressure centered up over northern Michigan. So, we're still on the northern or I should say eastern side of that high, which is the cooler side.
Northerly winds will persist as that high works its way through. Sunshine, those puffy clouds, and then it's right over top of your brain tonight. So, that means very cold for May. And that's why I think there's a higher chance for frost for many of you coming up tonight and tomorrow morning. So, if you have a little potted plant that you got for mom, make sure you bring it on in. Low pressure goes through the north central Great Lakes arriving here by Wednesday. Wet weather breaking out once that cold front goes through, it will turn chillier again into Thursday. Mid-50s now at Bear to the east side in the low 50s, northeast as well. 55 at Summit to Fairview 54 in Edinboro over to Corry. Low 50s for Dewittville. Mid-50s Youngsville, Titusville, Spartansburg in the mid-50s.
Saegertown, Meadville into the upper 50s. 7-day forecast cool, sunshine and those puffy fair weather clouds. Low to mid-50s. Mostly sunny Thursday.
Clouds increase late.
60 and then wet weather on Wednesday turning windy. Temperatures will drop through the day. So, it will turn cooler on Thursday.
Uh a little help from Lake Erie with some rain showers Thursday tapering and then nice weather by Friday. Mid-60s turning warmer heading into the weekend.
Highs into the low and mid-70s and it looks mainly dry. The forecast updated 24/7 on the Your Erie to Go app. Matt, over to you.
