The Piri Reis world map of 1513, created by Ottoman admiral Piri Reis, remains a subject of historical debate due to its remarkable detail of the Caribbean and South America, which was only 21 years after Columbus's voyage; Reis likely obtained this information through his uncle Kemal, who had taken one of Columbus's men hostage, providing first-hand sources, while the controversial southern landmass depicted is actually Terra Australisβa theoretical southern continent that ancient mapmakers believed existed to balance the northern landmasses, not actual Antarctica.

Unsolved Mystery: PiriReis World Map πΊοΈβοΈπ§ #history #unsolvedmystery #historicalmysteryAdded:
Why is this 1513 map still sparking arguments 500 years after it was made?
Pull up a chair and let's talk about the unsolved mystery of the Piri Reis world map. In 1513, an Ottoman admiral named Piri Reis created a world map that people are still arguing about today.
Make sure to stick around to the end because this map might show Antarctica before it was discovered. Piri Reis was born in Gallipoli, an important Ottoman naval town on the Dardanelles, the narrow waterway that connects the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. By 1513, he had become an experienced seaman and mapmaker inside of one of the most powerful empires of the age. And that same year, he created his famous world map. Only part of his map survives, but that surviving fragment shows the Atlantic Ocean, the coast of Western Europe and Africa, and a part of South America with unusual detail for its time. It also shows the Caribbean in extreme detail, which was pretty unusual for this time period, considering that Reis created the map only 21 years after Columbus crossed the Atlantic in 1492.
At this time, Europeans were still trying to understand the coastlines of the Americas. And not for nothing, they weren't really great at drawing the European ones, either.
But Reis's map was different.
It showed such shocking detail that it begs the question, how did Reis, a man who had never been to the Caribbean, understand the coastlines so well?
Thankfully, in Reis's case, we know exactly how he made his map. He wrote notes directly into the margins of his chart. And that some of his sources even came from Columbus himself because Piri's uncle Kemal had taken one of Columbus's men hostage, which would have been the first-hand source that Piri would need to create such a detailed map of the Caribbean. But this wasn't the only thing that made his map particularly interesting. The southern landmass at the bottom of Reis's map sparked some of the most famous controversy. His southern coastline shares a lot of similarities with our modern understanding of Antarctica. In the 20th century, some writers would claim the lower section of the map actually showed Antarctica before its official discovery. But, because you know I like to be a bummer, this is a bit of pseudo cartography bordering on nonsense. On Reis's map, this landmass is actually Terra Australis. Mapmakers all the way back to Ptolemy the first often believed a large southern landmass had to exist to balance the land of the northern hemispheres, a thousand or more years before anyone would see Antarctica.
In other words, they were guessing correctly that a southern landmass existed due to currents and weather patterns that influenced their travels, but they hadn't actually been there to map it out just yet. So, I suppose the stronger question is how did Piri Reis make such a sophisticated map in 1513?
The Ottoman culture was well known for extensive studies in mathematics, astronomy, engineering, architecture, design. I personally like to blame them for algebra. Ask yourself, was Piri Reis's map so good because he had secret knowledge? Or, could it be that he was just really good at math? You'll find more dark history, mysteries, and folklore on my profile.
