[00:00:00]well Pete Hoekstra is back at it again Donald Trump's sycophant ambassador to Canada is being linked to a foreign interference investigation involving the private voter data of 2.9 million Albertans people who never consented to having their information anywhere near an American political network and when asked about it his answer was typical Trumpian response I wasn't aware of any connection well guess what Pete that answer is not going to survive what we're about to talk through today because the paper trail doesn't care what Pete Hoekstra says he knew and today Canada needs to decide what it does with an ambassador whose network just got caught inside our democratic infrastructure let's establish what happened here Pete Hoekstra is the sitting United States ambassador to Canada before that he was the chair of the Michigan Republican Party in that role he publicly promoted an app called 10 Times Votes in fact he did it at multiple rallies for Trump and Vance this wasn't a passing comments he was actively on the record documented and he championed it yep 10 times votes is a voter targeting tool political technology built to find contact and mobilize voters for campaigns standard machinery in modern politics legal when used correctly but here's what Elections Alberta has now confirmed 10 times votes is directly linked to a group called the Centurion Project an Alberta separatist organization that used this technology network to access voter data it had absolutely no legal right to touch and Elections Alberta's response tells you everything about how seriously they are taking it they issued a cease and desist letter they sent representatives to a Centurion Project event and observed directly then they went to court and obtained an emergency injunction from the court of King's Bench this wasn't a routine administration step it was an emergency court order so what is the list of electors well in Alberta it's the official provincial voter registry names addresses and in some cases phone numbers for every eligible voter in the province produced by the provincial government issued strictly to registered political parties for the purpose of conducting elections any other use is illegal period according to Global News who is citing Elections Alberta's own findings 23 people were given full copies of the list another 545 accessed it through a searchable database the Alberta Privacy Commissioner has confirmed that more than 2.9 million Albertans may have had their personal information breached now that's nearly the entire adult population of the province and Elections Alberta specifically flagged that among those 2.9 million people are vulnerable individuals people registered confidentially because they are in witness Protection or have fled dangerous situations at home now their information may be in the hands of an organization they never heard of and never agreed to share anything with so Hookster's defense is that he was not aware of any relationship between 10 times votes and the Centurion Project and to be clear nobody is saying that he leaked voter data himself right but that's not the standard here the question is whether a sitting US ambassador who actively promoted the political technology that is now at the center of an unauthorized breach of Canadian voter data can still function as a credible diplomatic representative of the United States in this country criminal intent is not relevant to that question an ambassador's job is to build trust between two governments Hookstra's prior promotion of this app is now part of the public reporting around a live Elections Alberta investigation and that is enough to create a diplomatic problem all this in the middle of an already strained relationship between Ottawa and Washington you don't need a criminal finding to reach the conclusion that this man can no longer do the job that he was sent here to do and if you agree there is a link credibility in Ottawa is gone and credibility is the only currency an ambassador actually spends and this is where it gets bigger than one man and one app earlier this year US officials reportedly held meetings with Alberta separatist figures Mark Carney had to publicly state that he expects the United States to respect Canadian sovereignty think about that for a second when a head of government has to say that a statement that should be so obvious that it never ever needs to be said if those separatists are treasonous well I don't know what is but I'm not saying I do know I'm just saying if they aren't but the pattern is not a coincidence an American political operatives network promotes a voter targeting app the same app ends up connected to a Canadian separatist group US officials are meeting with that same separatist group inside that province and 2.9 million Canadians private election data ends up in the hands of the movement those officials were sitting down with yeah foreign interference in democracy rarely announces itself with a press release it usually comes through data political technology and networks that quietly feed the divisions already inside a country huh Canada is watching a version of that play out in real time and we have the name and title of the person at the top of the network Pete Hookstra and Ottawa is not the only government with a problem here Daniel Smith's Alberta government lowered the threshold for citizen initiated referendums UCP voices have been actively encouraging people to sign separation petitions and Smith publicly says that she supports a united Canada at the same time all while her government builds the legal machinery that makes separation much easier to trigger you cannot simultaneously claim to defend Canadian unity and lower the bar for the vote that ends it and now the provincial voter registry the actual list that every Albertan eligible to cast a ballot is on has been accessed without authorization by a group her government has been creating conditions for she needs to answer for that and answer now silence right now reads as something else entirely like guilt and listen the federal government they need to stop treating Danielle Smith as a complicated diplomatic file and start treating her as someone with a direct answer to give on how 2.9 million voter files left her building now let's run this scenario in another direction think about what would happen if a Canadian ambassador to the United States personally promoted a voter targeting app and then that app surfaced at the center of an unauthorized breach of 2.9 million American voters and then being used by a group actively pushing say Texas independence well what do you think would happen then oh I'll tell you what would happen that ambassador is on a flight home within 48 hours congressional hearings by the end of the week every cable network runs it for seven straight days it's treated as an act of aggression against American democratic institutions and the person responsible is gone before the story even fully breaks now Canada is being asked to accept a standard for itself that Washington would never apply in return and accepting that standard without comment is itself a decision about what Canada believes its democratic institutions are worth so what does Canada do Global Affairs should be calling hookstra in for a formal documented meeting at least not a background conversation a paper trail diplomatic request for a full accounting of the 10X votes network and its Canadian connections and if Washington can't provide a credible answer Canada has a tool available we have brought this up before and I'm bringing it up again it's called persona non grata the formal diplomatic declaration that a foreign official's presence is no longer acceptable it's not an act of war it's a country drawing a line about what it will tolerate inside its own borders Hookster's continued presence in Ottawa and is non stop insulting of Canadians and this country it sends a message it tells every single foreign government watching that Canada's democratic infrastructure can be touched and Ottawa will let it go quietly we can't let that happen that is not acceptable and this is where I am calling for Mark Carney's government to give him the boot the verdict on hookstra is clear his personal innocence in the breach it might be an argument for another day true diplomatic credibility doesn't run on innocent until proven guilty it runs on trust and trust with this guy is out the window a long time ago mm hmm so three things have to happen from here 1 Global Affairs calls hookster informally this week with a written record 2 Ottawa sends Washington a direct request for
