Weather forecasting involves analyzing current conditions including temperature, wind patterns, and precipitation to predict future weather patterns. Meteorologists use tools like Mesonet reporting sites and radar systems to monitor atmospheric conditions, identifying high and low pressure systems that determine weather patterns. Temperature variations across different geographic regions, such as the Tug Hill Plateau, are influenced by elevation and proximity to water bodies. Forecasters communicate expected conditions through specific timeframes, helping viewers plan activities and travel accordingly.

Storm Team Forecast: 5PM Saturday 6-20-26
Added:Hello there Central New York, and a very good late Saturday afternoon to you. I'm Storm Team Meteorologist Carson Metcalf.
This is your 5:00 weather update.
Overall, it's been a pretty nice looking Saturday across our area to start off the weekend. Nice mix of sun and clouds as seen here behind me just after 5:00 p.m. on our Cab Vie Skynet 9 camera over in downtown Auburn. And not only a really nice looking day, but a pretty nice feeling day, too. Look at the temperatures, upper 60s to low and mid 70s. Currently, 74° at the airport in Syracuse. We'll zoom in, take a closer look at some of the New York State Mesonet reporting sites. 73 over in Jordan, 71 Fayetteville, 70° on the dot over in Central Square. A little bit cooler though up toward the Tug Hill Plateau. For example, 62 at this hour over in Redfield. Got some extra clouds and also some rain showers as expected rolling on through parts of the North Country at this point. A dry and quiet on the radar picture here close to Syracuse, but showers, even a few thunderstorms headed through the Saint Lawrence Seaway into parts of the North Country at this hour. We'll continue to keep an eye on the radar. Nothing severe, I don't think, in terms of storms as we head into early this evening, but through around sunset or so, plan on a little bit of wet weather if your travel plans take you up toward a northern New York. Of course, we've been talking about the wind gusts over the past few days. Today, no different.
Not as strong as they were the past couple of days though, especially on Thursday. No 40, 50, 60+ mph gusts, but still gusting past 20 mph for many, including Syracuse, Rome, Fulton. Winds gusting to 30 mph up in Watertown right now. Good news is that breeze gradually eases up as we head through tonight. In fact, that wind near calm as we kick off the day on Sunday. And a light breeze with us as we head through the second half of the weekend. Maybe a couple of occasional gusts upward of 20 mph, but bottom line, not nearly as windy as it has been. In the short-term forecast lows as that breeze eases up for you tonight, pretty comfortable upper 40s to low and mid 50s under partly cloudy skies. A stray shower can't totally be ruled out, but overall, lots of dry time is expected. And same weather rules we take you into Sunday. A Again, mainly across the North Country, chance for a spotty shower tomorrow. Most of us are dry with a fair amount of sunshine, pleasant temperatures, low humidity, just a spectacular day. Get outside and enjoy it if you can on your Sunday.
Mid-70s in Syracuse tomorrow, upper 60s to near 70 it looks like on Monday. And those temperatures are off and running, eventually closer to average for this time of the year, 70s to near 80 by the middle of the upcoming week. In the short term though, again, first things first, time cast. Let's take you through it hour by hour. Fair amount of sunshine expected through sunset this evening for everywhere except the far North Country, extra clouds, a few showers continue there. Those shower chances gradually winding on down though, so by 11:00 later this evening, we should be a mainly if not totally dry. A few extra clouds building overnight, one or two spotty showers can't totally be ruled out here in Central New York, but overall, mainly dry weather continues to be our rule. Heading into tomorrow, mix of sun and clouds during the morning, giving way to a few hours it looks like of mostly sunny skies during the midday and the afternoon, at least here in a Central New York, out through the Mohawk Valley, Southern Hills, back into the Finger Lakes. However, east and northeast of Lake Ontario, once again, a few pop-up showers, maybe a rumble of thunder cannot totally be ruled out. But again, much like today, far from a washout even in those spots. High pressure scoots on by to our east as we head through tomorrow night. And by Monday morning, we'll start to have thicker cloud cover rolling on in. Rain moving in as well. Some of that rain could be locally heavy at times, especially near and south of the Thruway, as our next area of low pressure moves on by to our south. So, Monday, a rather unsettled day, a cooler day as a result of that increase in rain, with temperatures in the 60s to near or just above at 70°, but not to worry, warming back up once again as we just previewed for you, into the mid-70s with sun and clouds here on Tuesday.
Upper 70s to near 80, intervals of clouds and sunshine expected again on Wednesday. Next best chance beyond the middle of the week for a shower or thunderstorm that arrives on Thursday, but still pleasantly warm upper 70s with low humidity or close to 80 a few additional scattered showers and thunderstorms possible on Friday and then drying out for the most part outside of a stray lingering shower on Saturday kicking off the weekend on a pleasantly and seasonably warm note once again with highs in the 70s to near 80.
