Florida biologist fired over Charlie Kirk post after his death wins $485,000 settlement

[00:00:00]Uh you might remember earlier this week we told you the story about a man who received a settlement after being jailed for more than a month uh over a post he made about Charlie Kirk's death. Well, there is another big payout that has happened this time in Florida and this one involving someone who worked for the state there. Yeah, and I think we're going to start to see a lot more like freedom of of speech uh lawsuits over Charlie Kirk's death because I think there were so many people on social media who you know, it came on the heels of the United um Healthcare CEO being killed and then Charlie Kirk.

[00:00:30]>> Yeah. Uh a lot of people kind of criticizing Charlie Kirk online and even celebrating his death. Um her particular post, Brittany Brown is her name, she claimed that Kirk wouldn't care about children being shot in their classrooms. Now, she works for Florida's Fish and Wildlife um Conservation Commission. A biologist. And she posted it on her personal Instagram page. Well, she got fired. And she filed a lawsuit because they're kind of the main governing body in the state. So, once she was fired from her job there, she really didn't have another option. She couldn't get another job. Um The ACLU in Florida to make a point of saying that that her first amendment rights do not necessarily go just because she's she works for the government.

[00:01:15]>> Mhm. So, the settlement was for about half a million dollars, $485,000.

[00:01:21]And part of that settlement was she agreed to not seek for future um employment with the agency, which you would think is is a given, but um but that was part of it. But that $485,000, it does represent back pay damages, also attorney costs as well. So, so she's going to be leaving with a pretty good pay, a payday at least as a result of this after everything's over. Um by the way, uh her former supervisor had claimed that that the post itself led to hundreds of complaints and led to to to disruption.

[00:01:48]>> turned out yeah, only about 50 complaints in general uh and the the uh judge in the case actually imposed sanctions on that boss Mhm. not necessarily correcting the record on that. Yeah. So, yeah. Kind of a And And the other one you mentioned, by the way, the retired police officer, he was awarded $835,000 um for he lost his post-retirement job and missed the birth of his granddaughter while he was in jail. Yes.
