The city of Königsberg, which was German territory for over 700 years, was captured by Soviet forces in 1945 during World War II and subsequently assigned to the Russian Soviet Republic by Stalin, who replaced the German population with Russians and renamed it Kaliningrad; after the USSR collapsed in 1991, Germany, Poland, and Lithuania all declined to claim the territory, leaving Russia with this strategically important but geographically isolated enclave on the Baltic Sea.

Why Russia Still Owns Kaliningrad The Brutal WWII Story Behind a Split Off EnclaveAdded:
Yo, welcome to ugly ass [ __ ] world history. Why the hell does Russia own Kaliningrad? That random piece of land stuck between Poland and Lithuania. This place used to be called Konigsberg. For over 700 years, it was straight German territory. Heart of the Teutonic order, then Prussia, and a big deal in the German Empire. It was their culture, their history, their royal birthplace.
Then World War II kicked off. That ugly ass [ __ ] Hitler started the war and lost everything.
In 1945, Soviet troops rolled up and smashed Konigsberg after a brutal siege. Most Germans fled or got wiped out. When the war ended, that big ugly ass [ __ ] Stalin redrew the map. He took East Prussia and chopped it up. The middle part with the city went to the Russian Soviet Republic. Why not give it to Lithuania? Because Stalin didn't trust them. They were freshly conquered and he knew they might cause problems. So, he gave it to Russia instead. The Soviets kicked out almost all the remaining Germans and replaced them with Russians.
They even renamed it Kaliningrad. Later, Khrushchev tried to offer it to Lithuania, but they said, "Hell no. Too many Russians there." Fast forward to 1991 when the USSR collapsed. Germany could have tried to claim it back, but they didn't. That ugly ass [ __ ] Helmut Kohl was busy reunifying Germany and didn't want to start drama with Russia.
Poland and Lithuania also said they didn't want it. So, Russia kept Kaliningrad as their military outpost on the Baltic Sea. A cold, strategic piece of land that still belongs to them today, even though it's completely cut off from the rest of Russia. Real talk.
This is what happens when ugly ass [ __ ] start world wars and lose.
Borders get redrawn, people get kicked out, and entire cities change hands forever. That's the raw story of how Russia ended up with Kaliningrad. If you want more no fluff animated world history, smash subscribe and hit the bell. New videos dropping regularly.
