[00:00:36]I wasn't paying attention and I pricked my finger with the needle.

[00:00:40]You know, it's not the first time today.

[00:00:42]When I was out on a nature walk this morning, I came upon a plant that was covered with needles.

[00:00:47]What could it have been?

[00:00:49]Well, that's today's nature mystery. The case of the prickly plant.

[00:00:54]Let's check out my field notes for three clues to help you solve the mystery.

[00:00:59]Clue number one.

[00:01:04]DESERT.

[00:01:16]It's so beautiful here.

[00:01:23]Yay!

[00:01:26]You found the desert. Now for clue number two.

[00:01:31]Green.

[00:01:35]It's pretty dry and yellow here.

[00:01:39]Oh look, down there. Those plants are green.

[00:01:46]>> [music] >> Terrific. Now, clue number three.

[00:01:59]Needle.

[00:02:05]Oh, look closely. These plants are spiky.

[00:02:08]Cool.

[00:02:12]Ouch. I pricked my finger, too.

[00:02:16]That's one way to find it.

[00:02:19]Good work, nature detectives.

[00:02:21]Now, let's put the three clues together to solve the case of the prickly plant.

[00:02:26]You found the desert and a green plant that is covered in needle-sharp spikes.

[00:02:33]Those are cacti. That's right, Gumboot Kids. Those spiky plants are cacti. The spikes on a cacti protect it from animals. But, did you know that the spikes also provide shade to the plant to help prevent water loss?

[00:02:47]Cacti grow in hot, dry climates, so they need all the help they can get. We did it. CASE CLOSED.

[00:03:01]Like all living things, cacti need water to survive. It's really important to drink lots of fresh water throughout the day.

[00:03:09]Take time to drink water before you get really thirsty, and your body will thank you for it. Especially if you're somewhere hot and dry like the desert.
