Slight chance of severe weather in the forecast for Northern Michigan

[00:00:00]Andrew, it seems like a lot of the smoke that we've been seeing over the last few days is moving out, but now we are following some severe weather.

[00:00:06]>> Yeah, so we'll deal with that tonight.

[00:00:09][laughter] But after that, things look look pretty good. Yeah, and we're we're through the worst of the smoke. I think everybody's pretty glad about that.

[00:00:16]That was something last week, wasn't it?

[00:00:18]Just how intense it was.

[00:00:20]Let's start with that real quick.

[00:00:23]This is an area so here's the UP, northern lower Michigan, this is Ontario.

[00:00:26]Last week we had a huge cluster of fires up here. There are still a couple, but it's rained up here and it kind of extinguished a lot of the fires, so that's a great news for us moving forward here. So here's the smoke forecast. There's still a little bit overhead currently, but as we put this into motion, a cold front will pass through here.

[00:00:46]And then we'll gradually see clearer air moving in as we head into the middle of the week. So we should actually get rid of most of the smoke here moving forward as we head into the middle of the week. Air quality gradually improving here. Meanwhile, we have a pretty compact system off to the north of us tonight with a front right here that'll propel itself into the area later this evening. We have an enhanced risk for severe weather just to our west.

[00:01:12]Our region under a slight category two out of five for severe weather. But storms this radar looks a lot different than even an hour ago. Really blowing up across the central UP tonight. We've had multiple tornado warnings including Marquette, Iron and parts of Dickinson counties with these storms tonight. Severe thunderstorm warnings currently, but what we expect to happen here, these storms should consolidate into a bit of a line. There's 8:00 tonight.

[00:01:40]We'll run this out 10:00 11:00. There's a line of storms from Sault Ste. Marie to Green Bay.

[00:01:45]These will then work into northern Michigan.

[00:01:48]While we can't rule out some hail maybe or a brief tornado spin up, I think our main risk if these hold together will just be the the uh potential for some damaging winds with these storms. We'll keep an eye on them. I'll be here all night kind of keeping tabs on these as they arrive. And then tomorrow it's going to be much cooler. 60s and 70s with showers tomorrow. So, we might dodge a little bit of rain here and there. It'll be windy, too. Kind of a blustery day with a northwest wind.

[00:02:15]Cool. It'll feel a little more like late summer uh tomorrow. And then sunshine returns on Wednesday. Not to get lost in all of this is the potential for some torrential rain tonight, too.

[00:02:24]These storms could easily drop a quick inch of rainfall in a short time overnight tonight, very early tomorrow.

[00:02:31]So, tonight our forecast, thunderstorms, some possibly severe.

[00:02:35]A warm and muggy night ahead of that cold front tonight. 67 at Petoskey.

[00:02:40]Thunderstorms again, possibly some severe weather tonight. Uh the time frame on that, again, between 8:00 p.m.

[00:02:46]and 2:00 a.m. And then tomorrow, take a look at highs in the U.P.s in the 60s tomorrow. Newberry is stuck at 65, same in Engadine. With scattered showers tomorrow.

[00:02:55]In the Lower Michigan, scattered afternoon showers kicking in. Maybe a little bit of early day sun, then mostly cloudy the rest of the day.

[00:03:02]A gusty northwest wind. Winds could gust 30, 35 mph tomorrow.

[00:03:07]With that chance for some scattered afternoon showers.

[00:03:10]All right. Once we get past the severe weather threat this evening, a pretty quiet stretch of weather coming up.

[00:03:14]Looks nice Wednesday, Thursday, we're back close to 80.

[00:03:18]Maybe a few showers in the U.P. on Friday. And then into the weekend, it looks like a lot of storms there, but not really. Maybe an isolated storm or two. Again, upper 70s, low 80s for the most part.
