This production impressively bridges the gap between 18th-century choral roots and modern symphonic literature to explore the DNA of American sound. It elevates the marching arts by grounding high-energy spectacle in a rigorous historical narrative.

Did you check the other slots around yours? Yes.
Okay.
Um if you promise to lock it up so that no one steals your music ever again, I can get you some new music. Is that okay?

Hey, Mr. Walker.
One of the keys on my saxophone is all bent.
How did that happen? I have no idea. Did you drop it? Not that I know of.
Yeah, I've heard about this phenomenon.
I've heard that saxophones can bend themselves out of fear of being played correctly.
Huh.
I haven't heard of that one yet. Okay.
Well, let's go fix it. Already.
Hey Mr. Walker.
Kit says I can't get the sound system to work.

Your 2026 Medina Musical Bees Marching Band competition show is Hey, Mr. Walker.
So, William Billings, born in [music] 1746, is often considered America's first truly influential native-born composer.
He lived in Boston during the years [music] leading up to the American Revolution and wrote music for churches and community ensembles. His most famous piece, [music] Chester, became an unofficial anthem of the American Revolution.
It was originally written as a hymn tune. [music] Its lyrics openly challenged British rule and encouraged colonial independence.
The line from the song, "Let tyrants [music] shake their iron rod," stood out because it was shockingly bold for its time.
Billings was essentially saying, >> [music] >> "Let kings and oppressors threaten us with force and intimidation if they want. We are not [music] backing down."
To the colonists of 1770s, >> [snorts] >> this was not [music] a subtle poem. It was a direct statement of resistance.
The song gave ordinary [music] people something emotional and defiant to sing together during a period when the idea of independence was still dangerous [music] and very uncertain.
At a time when most American >> [music] >> music imitated European traditions, Billings wrote in a rough, more direct style that felt kind of distinctly American, [music] plainspoken, bold, and community-centered.
Then, nearly 200 [music] years later, William Schuman transformed Billings' simple hymn tune into Chester Overture for band. [music] Rather than simply arranging the melody, Schuman expanded into a dramatic and emotional music journey filled with rhythmic [music] intensity, bold brass writing, and sweeping musical development.
So, for our 2026 production, [music] Chester Overture for Band will serve as the musical foundation and emotional heartbeat of our show.
Based on the hymn tune Chester [music] by William Billings, our music will represent resilience, unity, struggle, and the enduring spirit [music] of people searching for identity and purpose during the birth of a nation.
Our production's [music] going to explore the energy, the tension, the hope, the humanity that shaped that uniquely American story.
Our 2026 [music] production will be 250.
>> [music] >> That's it?
There it is.
Oh, I almost forgot. That's not all.
In addition to using Chester, we're also going to use a bunch of music from Hamilton.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> You'll be back.
>> Okay. Soon you'll see. [singing] See ya.
You'll remember you belong to me.
>> Thanks for watching. You'll be back.
Time will tell. You'll remember that I served you well.
