Time loop films like Happy Death Day use the premise of a character repeatedly reliving the same day to create unique narrative structures that combine horror, comedy, and mystery elements. The genre allows filmmakers to explore character growth through repeated experiences, as the protagonist must solve their own murder while learning from each iteration. These films typically employ misdirection techniques, presenting multiple suspects to build suspense before revealing the true killer, often in unexpected ways that subvert audience expectations. The psychological toll of reliving traumatic events serves as a core theme, demonstrating how characters can develop resilience and self-awareness through repeated cycles of crisis and survival.

HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017) Movie Reaction! | First Time Watch! | Jessica Rothe | Israel BroussardAdded:
What is up ladies and gentlemen? It is your friendly neighborhood Michael Boost joined today by Ali Reagan.
We are getting into some fun stuff today. We are watching Happy Death Day.
Now, I appreciate y'all. As you all know, I'm not a big fan of horror movies. I don't do them well. This is like fun slasher scary that's a little bit easier to handle. So, I appreciate you all looking out for my blood pressure. I don't know if you all were the ones who suggested this or just a Charara is taking it easy on me. Either way, very excited. I hear this is very, very good fun. Looking forward to getting into it. Before we do, as you all know, you will be watching a cut down version of our reaction here on YouTube. If you want access to the full uncut uninterrupted reaction of ours, you can get that over at our Patreon page, patreon.com/sjump or cinnump.com. Both URLs will get you there. Once you're there, you will need your own copy of the film we are watching on here on HBO Max. But wherever you can find it, pull it up side by side with our reaction. and we give you a handy 3 2 1 countdown and then it's like you're watching with two of your best pals from the internet. All right, here we go. All the business stuff out of the way. Let's watch this movie.

>> Theoretically, >> just supposed to keep dying until I figure out who my killer is.
>> That's your genius plan.
>> I mean, that's how video games work.
>> All right. Got a clear room on the desk so we can >> Mhm.

>> See that pledge over there going the baseball hat? He's going to fall right now.
>> I'd buy it.
>> I mean, that one I feel like you can predict.
>> Either that or I'd be looking around and being like, "All right, where's David Blaine?" Yeah.
>> That's impressive.
>> That was nothing.
>> So ladylike. How very feminine.
>> Goodness. Corkies. I've never been to a Corkies.
>> It's your birthday.
>> That's a It's your dad. You want to want to get that?
>> Yes.
>> Yeah, you probably should.
>> That is the whole point of this.
>> Mhm. I don't know. I couldn't bear the thought of sitting through another uncomfortable celebration while we both pretend that everything is awesome.
>> Why are you closer with your mom?
>> Was.
>> All right. Here we go.
>> Oh, she >> Yep. 3 years ago.
>> Okay. All right.
>> We actually share the same birthday, though.
>> Mhm.
>> Serious. That's crazy. That's kind of crazy. If >> my mom saw me now, you know who I've become.
>> She wouldn't be happy with you.
>> She wouldn't like it.
>> No.
>> I don't think she'd be very proud.
>> Don't say that.
>> It's true.
>> I like you and I've only known you for 6 hours.
>> Okay. So, Corkies is definitely not a coffee shop.
>> I think it's closed.
>> I'm standing outside the Bayfield University Hospital where suspected murderer is being treated for a gunshot wound.
>> Yep.
The cop in the hospital >> subject of a nationwide manhunt that ended after a month >> across four state lines that left six female victims.
>> Oh, they all look like her.
>> A dozen other victims he's claimed to have buried across the vast desert.
>> He's been here the whole time.
>> What?
>> Okay. So, who is he?
>> Or either that or he's been set up by whatever crazed like birthday killer.
>> CALL THE POLICE. WHO? JOHN DOOMS JUST CALLED THE POLICE. WHAT? WAIT, DON'T GO IN THERE. SHH.
>> M the power outage.
>> Oh, >> maybe something happens with that.
>> Go get him, girl.
>> Nice. You got an axe now.
>> Go get him with the fire axe.
>> He's been right there.
>> Yeah, right. Oh, hello.
Oh, that's cheating. That's cheating.
Oh, no.
>> What? So, it's it's actually him.
>> Oh, hell yeah. Let's go, BOY.
DON'T GET right up.
>> Oh no.
>> Oh, Carter.
>> Carter. No.
The sketchiest wing of the hospital possible.
>> THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE, LITTLE GIRL.
>> Except there is.
Oh, kick his ass, >> Carter.
Set this thing. He's gone forever.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Oh, no.
>> Are you going to leap? Are you certain it works when you do it? Are you certain it works when you're the one?
>> It's the church annex.
>> Oh, damn.
See you soon, [ __ ] >> Okay, fingers crossed.
>> Okay, it works. Thank god. That's a whole lot of faith and confidence.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Ouchie.
>> I wasn't sure.
>> I can't believe you tried to save my life. Thank you so much.
>> No biggie. I just brought you home.
A >> uh I don't know if you remember my name.
>> Carter.
>> Carter.
>> And I remember that winning personality, too.
>> Do you mind if I borrow this?
>> I got to go smother a man.
>> See you at lunch.
>> Get that or what?
>> I'm going to be a good person today.
like she's having a really great day.
>> Uh-huh.
>> She's going to be so happy.
>> Save that boy. Save that boy.
>> Oh, that's why she grabbed the pillow.
>> Oh, nice.
>> Cute.
>> Look, Tim, let's get real. I know you don't like girls. Stop when you're not.
>> A >> love is love.
>> A >> A. Now you go out there and get yourself a fine piece of man ass.
>> Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
>> Oh my god.
>> Cute ill.
>> His name's Carter. No, we did not have sex. But if I finally make it through this day somehow, I'm going to have his babies.
>> Ste got to go.
>> I'm going to have his babies.
>> Be nice. Be nice. Be nice.
>> You're such a great friend and I love you.
>> You've always been there for me, but I've been way too selfish to even appreciate it. Can we start over? I promise not to be such a loser.
>> A Now, where's my cupcake?
>> Oh, by the way, I want to hear about this mystery guy.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Shows an acceleration.
>> Dr. Butler, >> can I have a word, please?
>> Oh, no.
>> I never should have started seeing you.
Anyway, I can't change what I've done, but I can start trying to be a better person today.
>> Aw, good for you.
>> Yeah.
>> What lame little self-help book did you get that from?
>> Okay, dick.
>> You have a wife who loves you so much.
So, if you can't be faithful to her, at least have the balls to leave.
>> Yeah.
>> Add a girl. Add a girl. Hell yeah. how totally sad and disappointing it is when certain people can't be bothered to make it to a mandatory house meeting.
>> Oh well, >> Becky.
>> Oh no.
>> Is that chocolate milk I see?
>> Is she also going to come in with Yeah, girl.
>> Yeah, look at those. She got fries.
>> Oh my god. An even worse meal.
>> Those are my favorite chips and you can't get them here anymore.
>> What's up with the fat fest? We're kappas.
>> Come on, honey. Live a little. Few calories won't kill you.
>> Live a little. It'll just turn me into a chunker like Becky here.
>> Poor Becky.
>> Hit her with it. Throw it. Throw it at her.
>> Baby bird it and be like up in here.
>> Oh god. Horrible.
>> I wouldn't be standing there for all that. Oh >> y.
Hey, just uh invite a Oh. Oh. Oh, >> I have to run. But what are you doing later tonight?
>> Nothing.
>> Do you want to take me out for my birthday?
>> What's the punch line?
>> What's the punch line?
>> Just say yes. Oh, >> yeah. Yeah.
>> A cute.
>> Adorable. Adorable. I love it. He just thinks he's like winning at everything.
>> Mhm. He's like, "Damn, I don't know what I did, but I won the lottery."
>> You're not going to eat?
>> No, just a check, please.
>> I'll be right back.
>> Oh, never mind. Scratch that. I hope she put on shoes.
>> Yeah, right.
>> How's school?
>> Fine.
>> Like your classes?
>> They're fine, Dad.
I don't want to do that anymore. This is really hard for me.
>> The ice is sunk to the bottom. It's fake ice.
I miss your mom. I miss that crazy horse laugh she had.
>> Rude. I'm sure it was quite delightful.
>> It can be crazy and delightful.
>> All of this running and hiding has made me so miserable.
>> Like literally and figuratively.
>> But I'm here.
>> Yeah.
>> And I love you. And I am so so sorry that I hurt you.
>> Yeah. Like she lost her mom, but he lost his wife.
>> Yeah, exactly. Like you're both going through it in a big way.
>> All right, gear up. We go to war, baby.
>> Yeah.
>> 30 minutes till he escapes.
>> Mhm. Yeah. 30 minutes till the blackout.
>> Stay calm.
>> Damn.
This is a really bad idea.
>> Agreed.
>> Okay, turn around and go home.
>> Go home. Walk away.
>> He's going to escape.
>> We can talk about this. Just put the gun there.
>> He's going to escape. Go get help. Go.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yes, ma'am.
>> They still have him in his outfit.
>> I know you're not asleep.
>> Mhm.
>> Open your eyes.
Safety's on.
>> Yep.
>> Safety's on, little girl.
>> Yep. Was he not cuffed to the >> What do we have here?
>> Oh, no.
>> Just like so concerned.
>> Damn. F.
You're a feisty little [ __ ] ain't you?
M >> I'll just make this one real quick for you. Okay.
>> Power outage. Oh, the smile.
>> Yes.
>> What a little badass.
>> Yes.
>> Safety's off. Thanks for the tip.
>> Amazing. Hell yeah.
>> So, this has got to be like the strangest birthday you've ever had, huh?
Yeah, probably.
>> Did she ever figure out how Tunis got free?
>> No, no one knows.
>> It's kind of like Houdini. Yeah, >> you guess.
>> She gets to spend her birthday evening at home. She shot a man. Like even if she was justified, that's like police questioning and >> it didn't work.
>> Who set him free? Who set him free?
>> Carter.
>> She didn't die. She went to sleep.
Surprised you remember my name.
>> This game.
>> This can't BE HAPPENING.
>> I KILLED HIM. I STOPPED IT.
>> OH, >> DAMN.
>> I mean, look, you were probably just having a bad dream or something. Like, it happens to me all the time when I'm drinking. You know, I >> a But now you don't have a good story with Carter.
>> She finally rolls in.
>> I'm out of here. Goodbye.
>> I was wrong. I thought if I stopped running, then I could beat it. But it's never going to stop.
>> So, she fell asleep.
>> Now is definitely the time for candle and cupcake.
>> Tree, look. Happy birthday.
>> A, >> thanks. But I already ate it last night.
>> No.
>> No way.
No way.
The cupcake is poisoned.
>> You killed me. What? You poisoned it?
No, >> she works in the hospital.
>> Uh-huh.
>> So, you had to find another way. Then tombs fell right into your lap.
>> No, >> she freed him.
>> Mhm.
>> I was going to Oh, >> I did ask, but I was like, why hasn't she come to >> Yeah. No, you're right.
>> Check on her. But you knew that if he escaped, everyone would assume that he killed me.
>> Wow.
>> But why? It's a joke. It >> Yeah. Why?
>> Okay, then. Eat it. Prove it.
>> Eat the cupcake.
>> Take a bite.
>> Oh my god.
>> You really are crazy.
>> You're not going to eat it.
>> Take it down to the police. I'm sure they can tell us what your little birthday treat is made of.
>> Oh, >> there it is. Oh my god.
>> Yes.
>> Stupid little [ __ ] You know, I've been a bad roommate, but isn't this a bit much?
>> Like a little bit much.
>> Maybe because you wouldn't stop sleeping with him.
>> The doctor you called it.
>> Oh no.
>> He just kept choosing you.
>> Oh.
>> Oh my god.
>> You've been killing me over some stupid guy. YOU'RE A DUMB [ __ ] TOO.
>> OUCH.
>> I mean, how did you figure it out?
Because you've killed me before.
>> Excuse me. Then I guess I'm just going to have to do it again.
>> Ow.
>> What the hell's going on?
>> Nothing.
>> Everything's fine.
>> Whatever. Clumsy hose. I better see you at the meeting today.
>> Get her with the cupcake.
>> Yep.
>> Eat it, [ __ ] Yeah.
>> Oh my god, the chandelier.
>> Nice.
>> Hell yeah.
>> So, how are we explaining this one?
>> I mean, clearly she attacked her and like the forensics, >> right?
>> What about Carter?
>> Right. Huh?
>> Hello. I'm trying to get interviewed here.
>> Danielle is the worst.
>> Lor's little plot was super lame.
Poisoning a cupcake. Really? We're kappas. We don't eat cupcakes.
>> We don't eat cupcakes.
>> Eat cupcakes.
>> Hey, Dad. Dad.
>> Dad. No. Dad.
>> Everything's fine. We're okay.
>> I'll see you soon.
>> Are they back at Corkies?
>> I love you, too. Bye.
>> I got to be right. So, uh, now that your bedroom is officially a crime scene and all, >> you plan on crushing it.
>> You want to sleep in my place?
>> You sure you want to wake up in a dorm room again?
>> Only if it's Tuesday.
>> Only if it's yours.
>> Little line.
>> You know, your little scenario reminds me.
>> Where?
>> Uh, >> what's that?
>> Groundhog Day.
>> Groundhog Day.
>> Groundhog Day.
>> Now I know what we're doing for date night tonight.
>> Are you kidding me?
>> Ghostbusters.
>> Sorry. I >> How? I don't know, >> girl. You'd be great for Cinnipels.
>> It's my birthday.
>> No way.
>> No way.
>> I wasn't sure if you wanted to do a a sleep in or not.
>> I'm kidding.
>> I just called your phone.
>> What?
>> It's Tuesday the 19th. You made it.
>> Oh my god.
>> Oh my god. What a dick.
>> Carter. Babe, >> I'm going to kill you. Man, he believed that enough to prank her with it.
>> Oh, >> she's back.
>> Yeah.
>> In my car again. It smells like hot pockets and feet.
>> So does our dorm room.
>> Come on. There we go.
>> Finally.
Yay.
>> Thank the Lord.
>> Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
>> Take it down.
>> No. Leave it forever. Oh my god. Fun credits.
>> Yeah, right. Nope. All right, cool. Just fun credits, but just fun credits.
>> That's it.
All right, so I didn't get it. I didn't get it. Chalk one up, ladies and gentlemen. Michael did not get it. I was thinking it, though. I I know you all aren't going to believe this, but I was thinking it. There was a point where I was like, I feel like the nurse might have let him go.
>> You did you did say at some point something about the roommate.
>> No, you don't you don't got to give it to >> But it was so so early.
>> It was so early on. So early on. Oh my god. See? Okay. Okay. Okay. Here's my thing is I love the reveal. Very well done. Very, very clever. Um, >> the cupcake like it being the thing the entire time was really, really great.
Part of me really wanted the extra supernatural layer of it having to do with her mom and her mom's the killer because she's like fleeing from the grief.
>> I thought, >> but I feel like that's too much of a metaphor for this.
>> This dude would have been the one that like killed her mom.
Yeah, cuz we never really got a story of like what happened to her mom. No.
>> So maybe Yeah, there was like some sort of catharsis there or something.
>> I don't know. But I I would have liked that angle, but I'm not dissatisfied with the angle that we got.
>> No, it was fun.
>> Yes, it was a fun slasher.
>> Yes. Very, very fun. It was entertaining. It was hilarious.
>> Oh, she was great.
>> Oh my god. Yeah. Jessica Roth. What else has she been in? Cuz she was phenomenal.
when she went from being like cliche first death in a horror movie >> Uhhuh.
>> to like the final girl like she went through all of those characters.
>> She really did. She was every iteration of a horror movie girl.
>> First death to final girl. I think that's really really clever. And so we don't have have to have a whole cast of characters that um >> Well, there's a second one too. I did know that there was a second.
>> Oh, there's a second one. Well, that's a little spoiler, but I guess it didn't spoil anything because we have no idea how that happens. Oh, she's in La La Land.
>> Huh.
>> It's been ages since I've seen that movie.
>> She's in the New Valley Girl, >> which I haven't seen the original, so I have not seen that either.
>> More things to add to the list. More things to add to the list. But no, she was phenomenal. She did really, really, really great. I liked her acting in this. She was really fun. Um, the guy who played Carter was also super sweet.
Real >> good. He looks familiar.
>> What else have you been in Israel? Hm.
What do you got under your belt?
>> It might just be this.
>> He might just have one of those faces.
>> Fear of rain and in the dark. Okay, he's back and happy.
>> All the boys.
>> Oh, he's Josh and All the Boys I Loved Before. That makes total sense.
>> Isn't that the friend?
>> Yes.
>> It's been so long since I've seen it.
>> Yes, he's the friend. He's the one that like doesn't exactly get with the girl but is still like sort of in her life.
>> He's in the bling ring.
>> Oh, is he the one that documents everything?
>> Ah, >> maybe that might be wrong, though.
>> All right. Well, he's got some credits to his name, too. I loved him in this. I thought he was so fun and like genuinely sweet. There was a brief part of me.
There was a small part of me that when she woke up again after like the >> that he got her >> that he got her that he he was the one all along, right? Like somehow it was going to reveal like yes, I've been manipulating time in order to get you with me. But that was quickly dispelled quickly quickly out of my mind. But >> well, they did at the surprise party.
They talked about the roommate. What's her name? Lorie's new dude.
>> New guy. Yes.
>> So, like I I could see how it could potentially be Carter and they planned it together, >> right?
>> But I don't I don't think it's >> the seeds were planted.
>> Like it just was insane and just telling stories, telling tales.
>> Telling tales. Lying. I I really love >> the doctor dude >> that it all came back to the doctor dude, but it wasn't because of the doctor dude. She was like, "That's so stupid." Like, it's over a guy. That's That's >> You're killing me over a guy. You're crazy. You're crazy.
>> Insane.
>> The The thing I really love about it, though, is it's it does a really good job of misdirecting. I mean, like, obviously, that's the goal of any sort of slasher film or things like that is you have your laundry list of characters that you're like, "Oh, it could be any one of these." And then inevitably it's the person that you don't suspect or you suspect the least. M >> but they they do a great job of sort of layering over the suspicious people that we don't even remotely suspect that the twist is going to be her roommate because her roommate seems so innocuous.
>> Yeah.
>> So, we're just sitting here being like, is it the doctor? The doctor could have done it. And then it's like way too obvious that the doctor did it. Um I'm surprised we didn't spend more time with maybe the wife did it and we covered that in like a montage. But the way that the wife's face in that split second like scene like there's no way that that was the first time.
>> Yeah.
>> There's no way she looked at her, she's like, "Oh my god, she looks like me but younger."
>> The the moment she walked in through the door in that first one, you could she knew >> for sure. For sure.
>> And that's not a reason to to kill a 21 22-year-old.
>> That's a reason to kill your husband.
>> That's a reason to leave your husband.
>> Like >> Yeah. I mean, kill leave. You say tomato, I say potato.
But I Yeah, I didn't I didn't think it was the wife for very long.
>> No. And like he clearly has he he's clearly a serial adulterer. Cheater.
Cheater. You know, you say potato, I say tomato. Anyway, um but clearly this is a pattern of his, especially since he's with the roommate and tree.
>> Is he actually with the roommate though?
cuz she she did say she's like he picked you. He he he picked he kept choosing you. He chose you over and over and over again.
>> You're right. There's no guarantee that they were actually together.
>> She could have just been crazy about it.
>> She could have just been crazy and wanted him.
>> Just like really obsessed, which tracks for the kind of girl that would like straight up murk her roommate over a dude.
>> Over a dude. A dude who's married.
>> He's married.
>> He's not going to really pick either of you in the long run. He's married.
>> Yeah. Ultimately, if he's still with the wife, he's actively choosing the wife.
He ain't going to pick you.
>> But like Tree had no problem with that.
But Lori was crazy enough dealing with her own stuff.
>> I still wanted there to be something with the mom.
>> But that said, it does do a fun sort of making fun of Groundhog's Day where it's like, "Oh, I'll just be a good person and everything will turn out okay."
>> And it didn't. And it didn't.
>> And it it didn't work. It didn't work at all.
There is a sequel, so maybe we get more of her story in the sequel.
>> Does Does Lori come back from hell? Do we have another crazed roommate? Is it Carter? Is Carter He just Was he actually in on it?
>> We'll have to watch and find out.
>> We will have to watch it and find out.
