When installing a new intake system on an aircraft engine, the improved airflow often requires adjusting the fuel mixture to prevent running lean, which can be identified by monitoring RPM, temperature, and fuel pressure during startup and idle; a choke system is necessary for cold starts to enrich the mixture, and proper ignition system wiring with ballast resistors must be configured to ensure correct voltage delivery to the coil for reliable engine operation.

WAR Corsair Update 5/27/2026Hinzugefügt:
Hello everyone. Don and Don back with the uh next progress report on the workhorse air. All right. Uh this is the next day. Uh I got the intake finished up today. Got the throttle cable attached. Everything's hooked up again.
Hooked up a little fuel tank cuz I don't want to put any fuel in the main tank cuz I want to take it apart and try and seal it up better. So I'm going to order up some material from Aircraft Spruce.
I'm not going to get the stuff that we used to use in the FBO because that's a two two ounce 2 and a half ounces of that stuff is like $55 and I don't need that much and it's a two-part that you pretty much mix up the whole batch when you use it. So, uh I don't need that much and I don't want to spend that much money on that stuff. So, they have some other stuff that uh looks promising.
So, I'm going to get that instead. All right. So, you can see today uh this is just a short extension I just found and threw on there, but I'll need to get a longer piece of this hose material if I want to hook that port up when I switch over to the uh mechanical distributor.
And you can see I got it uh welded together here and safety wired like it was before. Before it had a steel bracket. Um, yeah, it was a steel one that was weld up and then I was able to get a uh Adell clamp attached to the alternator.
I still left the fuel line the full length cuz until I figure out the final routing once I remove my fuel pressure gauge to for testing pressure and seeing how this thing's working. But, uh, some of this configuration will be changed up. So, right now it's just temporary. I got a hose clamp on that.
And I did come out and uh put the arm up here and measure up where I needed to make it. So I have a drawing all drawn up to make the plate, the backing plate that'll go underneath this like it did before. And you'll have uh a tab. It's big enough for the pick up the hole where this thing needs to pivot here.
And then also for the cable to come up through. Looks like one of my screws rattled out.
Uh, sitting right there cuz those weren't tightened.
I have to snug it down a little bit. Let me grab a wrench real quick. Well, that back lighting really causes a uh foggy glare. I think this is the right size.
Don't want that falling in the carburetor.
All right, that snugged. That was the only one that was loose.
But anyway, it's been I've had it running again. I was uh figured out where all this needs to be hooked up. And after running it, getting it running, it will need this choke cuz when it's idling cold, it's idling too lean. And if you're richening it up, then once it warms up, then it goes back to too rich.
So, the fuel enrichment will come in handy. So, uh, let's see. And it's still dripping. Well, it's kind of dried up, but we'll turn around. We'll see what happens. But I I do have a seal coming for that. I think that's about it. Uh, I will put a piece of rubber around hose around this. Clamp it on. So, it's cuz that's going to want to rub there. And it's just that's all I've got. You know, I can't adjust it any better than that.
So, all right. Uh let's I had to throw it on the charger earlier and it wanted to do the uh recondition charging, but let's let's give her a try. And it's been about an hour. I had to brush hog the field out here. People noticed that it was getting a little uh unruly. So, I went over that thing like three times to get it all mulched up and knocked down.
That took an hour just to do this patch in front of this garage.
And we'll just give her a quick couple little shots of fuel. Turn that on. Turn the alternator on. See if it'll start and idle.
All right. Try again.
That's about 1,400 RPM. The air fuel will kick on here after about a minute.
Probably should be cleaner than 13 1 half 14.
Uh water temps back down under 110.
Yeah, there it is. It's clean.
You know, fuel enrichment will come in handy.
About 35 lbs of pressure, 14 1/2 volts, real very low amps. So, yeah, it's counterclockwise as you're sitting in play.
This isn't hooked up, so it's just sitting there riding along.
So, that's what happens. It's cuz it's running a little lean till it warms up a little more. Let's see what happens.
Just crack the throttle here.
It's still a little cold, but let me go ahead and shut her all down.
So, it lives again. Running good.
I think when it was I had the laptop hooked up to it earlier and was watching it out here and it was Come on, focus.
It was um running lean at part throttle.
When I get her off idle real good, it wants to run a little leaner. So, this intake has definitely made a slight difference in the mixture. It needs a little more fuel. So, it's either telling me it's flowing better or it more air flow is getting in there. So, it might need the uh intermediate jet kicked up one size cuz I did drop it down from it was on a 36 and I'm down to like 31 or something like that. So, I might have to bump it up one. But, I'm not going to change it. Uh I'm going to uh put the prop on it before I do that.
But I think my next thing is I'm about done with the intake is finished.
There's nothing left to do. Uh and this baby does get cold uh when it's running, but that's back here. That's not cold in the carburetor. Um and then once it sets, this thing's still warm from heat soaking after it shut off the last time, which was like I said over an hour ago.
Um so my next thing is is just to hook this up.
All I got to do is hook that red and black into one of these coils through my extra harnesses I got. And then I have to run a ballast resistor uh from power through to the coil. But uh the ballast resistor has to be after this cuz this needs a 12vt input. So, the ballast resistor has to be between uh the um the power coming from the battery to it. And then this has to be wired before the ballast resistor for it to work. If it's, you know, cuz it's going to drop the voltage down to 9 volts or so and then this may not trigger. Uh it may need a full 12 volts to trigger. So, it's got to be wired in the right way.
Uh the bast resistor needs to be on there to drop the voltage uh to the coil.
So the ground when it's triggered through this, it's not pulling uh 12 volts through the ground. It's pulling 9 volts through the ground. So if you can understand what I'm talking about, uh this has to be wired with full 12 before the resistor. And then the resistor goes in line with the power to the coil. And then this just hooks to the negative trigger of the coil. So So I'll get that wired up. Uh, and then I I might have to throw I don't have any straight boots that I can stick on these temporarily to plug them in. Now, this one is uh this is the coil which uh yeah, it's got to plug into here. So, into this when I take these out and then plug these in to there. So, I don't think I have any straight boots to use without yanking these off. And if I don't put a boot on there, they'll probably want to arc. And these are these are not easy to pull off on and off without just, you know, pulling the terminal off the end of the uh off the end of the wire that plugs onto the coil. So, but it does run good. Um I mean, it revs right up five grand with no problems.
Let's do another real quick check here.
Try to crack that throttle here.
Now regulator is only one kind of pressure.
That's why I don't want to trust that regulator.
It's got to be idling under a th00and right there by the sounds of it.
Yep, it sure is.
146 came out that it's warmed up. The airflow ratio is better.
It'll have to idle at least a thousand with prop on it to keep the prop from slapping the backlash on the gearbox and gears.
All right, I guess that's going to do it. Just make this one a very short one.
Nothing else to report other than I'm going to hook up that next ignition maybe tomorrow and and see how it runs with the distributor. And if that checks out, I'll I'll go ahead and make another video of that. Meanwhile, I'm going to cut out the parts to make the box for this. So, air filter. And then again, with the air the cowling off, the air filter is going to set in here. So, it's got plenty of room for the air filter.
It'll essentially be flush with the plate. It'll be a uh 3in uh piece of tubing sticking out the back for this to clamp onto. So, all right, that's going to do it for this quick update. Just wanted to get that out and let you guys see how it runs. It is running better, and I do think it's running a little lean now, but uh I'm not going to mess with the jetting until I put the prop on it and get it outside. The ground is still soft, so it's a bear to roll around out there. And, uh, got a hell of a mess going on with the grass now, too.
So, all right, everybody. That's going to do it for this update. As always, appreciate you taking time to watch these videos. And as always, feel free to leave any comments, questions, concerns. And as soon as I can get that other distributor set up and wired up, I'm just going to temporarily wire it with a jumper wire. Just hook to the battery, start it up, and rev it. See if it works okay, and then unhook it to kill it. It's all it's got to do.
Everything else will be disconnected. I can unplug the ignition triggers here so it kills the coils and I don't have to worry about it. I just need a power and a ground. That's it. All right, everybody. Again, thanks for watching and I will catch you guys on the next one.
