Public figures who maintain their innocence cannot pursue rehabilitation paths that require admission of guilt, as demonstrated by the Prince Andrew case where his refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing prevents him from following the 'Profumo option' of anonymous charity work, and the King's constitutional position as head of the judiciary prevents him from engaging with ongoing legal proceedings.

“How FAR This Man Has FALLEN” | Ex-Prince Andrew Can Be JAILEDAdded:
I mean, there's never a day really where this man is now out of the headlines at the moment, isn't there? For a whole variety of reasons. We've probably got about another two years worth left in this story.
>> I think you're right. I mean, as soon as Parliament goes into recess, uh what happens step forward Andrew Minso. I mean, I think exactly the same happened actually. He was last time when Parliament was in recess in February, then he was arrested. Uh um yes, I mean it's a another um I mean it's just when we think he he can't really sink any deeper. Um Dan, we go one more step with the news that um the the police are I mean the legal position has not changed, but you know that the police are um uh making it clear that the their investigation um is is is more extensive perhaps than some people think. Um but you know that follows on yesterday we had the news from the government that uh about his appointment as a trade envoy.
Um and then today comes this news that he's uh he's refusing well it's is it's painted as refusing to surrender the freedom of the city of London. I suspect um he probably has no idea um about this going on. I mean, since he's left office and really left his public life and >> being kicked out of the house, he doesn't really have much in the way of uh of of a of a of a secretariat or even much in the way of staff. So, um I dare say the city of London may well have been writing to him care of Buckingham Palace and it's been sitting in an intray. But, uh I the other thing is I suspect he's probably not going anywhere near the city of London or anywhere else. Well, this is very true and and the word freedom is probably not a a word he recognizes much these days anyway. And he might may not even realize he has the freedom in the city of London. Who knows?
>> Yeah, I I I I think of all the things he wants to do right now and being able to drive a flock of sheep over Tower Bridge or whatever. No, London Bridge. I think he's probably it's probably fairly low down his bucket list. Um but yeah, I mean it's it's another um just reminder of how far this man has fallen and what a u what a sort of tordry sideshow it is because actually the the royal family, the monarchy have been on an absolute role lately. I mean the king has had a a fabulous few months um notably with his state visit to the USA which by any metric was a great success. um you've had other members of the family um you know out and about in uh in in Italy and elsewhere and um and so no it's it's been it's been very successful.
>> Um is there I mean this may be a dafted question to be honest Robert but is there a a way back for him? I mean is there any such thing? I always think of um the uh John Proffumo who obviously went through you know a horrendous time and nothing of this scale as we we we now know but um it was certainly you know horrendous at the time and and largely dedicated uh his later life to charity and benevolence and he was working in sort of you know white chapel sort of um homeless shelters and the like and I just thought what a remarkable man you know what more can you do you feel you've messed up you've left let your country down you've let your family down. Um what greater way and I think there was a kind of you know slightly religious underpinning to what he did uh than to put something back. So he did that and he did it mostly fairly um anonymously. Um I mean I only say that because as the obvious way that you can sort of somehow regain credibility is it to sort of join the Salvation Army or something? Well, it's a very good point, Ian. And I have actually asked people in the palace and around um the former Duke um over a number of years, you know, what about what what some people sometimes call the Profumo option. Uh and the way it's come back to me is well, the thing about Joe Proffumo is that he uh when he was caught, he just put his hands up and said, you know, guilty is charged. He left the Commons.
He stepped down. Um he admitted everything. um and then set about rebuilding his life as you say very quietly at Toyby Hall in the East End doing good deeds and was eventually recognized for that. Yeah. Now the problem with Prince Andrew is a um it's not really in his nature to to sort of start to um go around um um scrubbing Lu's in in the East End. And and secondly um on a more serious note um you know he does as we keep repeating he says he hasn't done anything wrong. And so to do what Profumo did would be u an acknowledgement of some sort of guilt and at the moment he's saying there isn't any and it would completely undermine his legal position if he started doing that. So I think he is in a sort of enforced limbo. Uh and we should remember I mean in recent weeks there has been a lot of calls for the king to for example when he was in America people saying the king must um talk to the um Epstein victim. this what's happened in the last 24 hours underlines why the king simply can't go anywhere near this story because uh because to do so would put him in a position of legal jeopardy. He is the head of the judiciary. He's the fountain of justice. He can't go anywhere near anything the smacks of ongoing legal proceedings. So we are although we in the media of course we want to talk about it. We want instant resolution.
We're just going to have to wait to see where this goes.
>> Indeed. Um, I have to say just on a separate point, Robert, um, I had no idea this was called the Proffumo option. I genuinely thought up until that very point that this was my own comparison that I'd suddenly I'm utterly devastated to discover other people have made this same this >> great minds. Great minds think quite clearly. Robert, lovely to see you again. Thank you for your time. Have a great weekend. Robert Hardman, he is of course a writer at the Daily Mail.
