Dislocation of the Big Toe

[00:00:04]The big toe is not supposed to do that.

[00:00:19]I was scrolling through Tik Tok and I came across this.

[00:00:24]This Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor injured his right foot.

[00:00:31]He has a medial dislocation of the great toe.

[00:00:36]A man was there who was also an EMT.

[00:00:40]He performed what is called a closed reduction of his big toe.

[00:00:46]A closed reduction takes place when a fracture or dislocation is realigned without using a surgical incision.

[00:01:00]So, I reached out to this content creator and I asked her if I could use this material in this video. She had graciously allowed me to do so. Her name is Bailey Parker of Keller, Texas. She is an accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor herself.

The EMT did a great job realigning his big toe because he was trained to do so. Do not ever try to do this yourself. The ideal location for this treatment should be an urgent care center or an emergency room.

[00:01:49]The full extent of the injury should be determined before any treatment takes place.

[00:01:55]Ligaments hold bones together across a joint.

[00:01:59]In order for the injury to take place in our guy, there would have had to been a partial tear or complete rupture of the lateral collateral ligament of this big toe joint. X-rays need to be taken to determine if there's a fracture. This X-ray of a normal foot shows proper alignment of the big toe.

[00:02:19]This is what his X-ray might look like without a fracture. If he suffered a fracture, this is what it might look like. Reduction of a dislocation requires three steps.

[00:02:31]First is to increase the deformity. That is basically kind of make it worse. Next is distraction.

[00:02:40]Pulling the toe away from the foot to line it back up. Finally, reduction.

[00:02:47]Allow it to naturally fall back in place or even give it a little nudge. So, if you injure yourself in any sporting or fitness activity, don't try to fix it yourself and think you're good to go. Go to an urgent care center or an [music] emergency room. See a doctor as soon as possible so you can have a full evaluation of their injury to make sure [music] that you'll be put on the right path to recovery.
