Arrest of NYC Councilman caught on cameraAdded:
to city council member arrested. New video of the moment Chi Osse was put in handcuffs after a scuffle with police in Brooklyn. Good afternoon, I'm Richard Giacovas. Thanks for joining us for the news block. That council member's run-in with the NYPD all stem from a protest against deed theft in Bed-Stuy. Fox 5's Arthur Chieng joins us from there with the latest. Arthur.
Richard, I think most New Yorkers know that evictions are an ugly process and sometimes they are ugly as well as complicated. Well, this is what played out here at 212 Jefferson Avenue this morning as [snorts] officers arrived to execute a notice of eviction and this is how it went.
That's city council member Chi Osse in the thick of it blocking officers as they tried to evict the family currently living in the building. Osse was seen on video appearing to resist arrest, but cameras then seem to show officers throwing him to the ground. As the city council member hit the ground, he says he hit his head as he was slammed to the concrete sidewalk. Now, four others were also arrested along with the city council member as all of this played out here in Bed-Stuy. Osse was brought to the 79th precinct after being arrested.
Four others were taken into custody as well and Fox 5 was there when the council member was released.
I was treated rough by the police officers today. I I was I was just standing in in front of the home and you know, there is some there's a mix of details that are that's going on today and I'm sorry if I'm a little spacey. My head my head hit the pavement pretty hard today.
Yeah, and in fact, after speaking to the press here, Osse was brought into an ambulance around the corner for examination including a possible head injury. We just got this update uh from his staff that he's currently still at the hospital under evaluation for that possible head injury. Now, back at the building, we spoke with the woman that officers had come to evict today. We asked her directly about the allegations that deed theft is involved here. We asked who is trying to steal her building.
My father ended up being in a guardianship in the state of Georgia illegally. They put him in the illegal guardianship. My father has a POA that instructed for me and my sister to be over him if anything. The courts disregarded that.
Now, both Carmela and the city council member insist that this here is a case of deed theft, something that council member Osse has been clamoring to get authorities to investigate as a practice.
Well, Osse says his arrest certainly got the attention of Mayor Mondani today.
I think first is to say that the council member is rightly passionate about tackling the scourge of deed theft and he has been someone who has been leading. It's been a pleasure to be working with him alongside the creation of efforts that our administration will be delivering on to combat that same scourge and I'll follow up on on the details of this arrest.
Okay. So, there are three things to follow up on. One is the condition of the city council member who as we just learned just now remains hospitalized for evaluation for that head head injury. We also are going to follow up on the four other individuals who were arrested, some of whom also had to be hospitalized and then of course is the complicated issue of what's going on here, whether or not it's deed theft that we are seeing.
