Project Pluto was a Cold War-era nuclear-powered ramjet cruise missile developed by the United States in the 1960s that could fly at Mach 3 at extremely low altitudes with virtually unlimited range; however, the program was canceled before any tests because its unshielded nuclear reactor would have released radioactive exhaust directly into the atmosphere while flying over enemy territory, creating uncontrollable environmental risks that outweighed its military advantages.
