This deep dive effectively dismantles the facade of "empowerment" coaching, exposing how charismatic authority often exploits the very vulnerabilities it claims to heal. It is a necessary critique of an accountability-free industry that commodifies trauma under the guise of mentorship.

Shyanne Bryant is currently at the center of a major wave of online scrutiny and debate regarding her academic credentials and use of doctor title. But beyond the headlines, backlash, [music] and internet outrage, this conversation may reveal something deeper about image, authority, perception, and the collective relationship with validation and trust.
The conversation intensified significantly following her recent appearance on The Breakfast Club to promote her new book, Live Your Promise.
During the interview, Shyanne Bryant was directly questioned about her qualifications, sparking widespread discussions across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit.
>> And renowned life coach Dr. Cheyenne Bryant [music] And Dr. Bryant is also known as Coach B on Teen Moms. Welcome to the show.
Hello. Hello, Marci. Thank you for having me and good morning.
Oh, it's wonderful to have you and catch up about the show and why this is so important and the difference that you are making.
So, the first thing I want to talk to you about is, you know, the reason you're a part of Teen Moms. I I found that you yourself were raised by teenage parents.
Is that why this is so important for you? You know, Marci, I love that you said that um because that is a big part of why, you know, the empathy and the compassion and that the love that I have for these teen moms and the teen dads that are on the show is because it's not just something that, you know, I went to school for and I've been doing this for I've been in the field of of therapy and coaching for for 16 years. It's something that hits home and it's something I can relate to. Most know Cheyenne Bryant from Teen Mom. She has done extensive work within the entertainment industry, but at the core of the controversy currently surfacing online is credential verification.
Critics and mental health professionals online have raised questions and concerns regarding the legitimacy of her doctoral degree, noting a lack of publicly available dissertation records or independent verification. Marci is trying to work with other schools to see if students can transfer their credits to another college, but it's still unclear if that will actually be possible. Tonight, students I spoke with say they're upset and frustrated the school gave them such short notice.
Cheyenne Bryant later addressed the backlash by explaining that she completed a doctorate program in counseling psychology at Argosy University before the institution became defunct. She stated that retrieving archive documentation became complicated following the university's closure while also maintaining that she holds multiple degrees. Argosy University preparing to close down for good this Friday.
Planning to shut down its Tampa campus along with campuses across the country.
>> They kind of should have gave us some type of warning ahead of time.
>> The school notifying students via email Wednesday writing in part quote Argosy University will be unable to continue operations after March 8th.
>> It's very disappointing to know that we may not be graduating.
>> In a statement released late Thursday, the school says in part quote if a campus is not acquired by another higher education institution or another institution does not agree to teach out the programs upon court approval, it will close on Friday, March 8th, 2019.
The closing comes amid backlash facing the university. According to court records, the school failed to pay out more than $13 million in financial stipends to its students.
According to students, court-appointed receiver Mark Doutor told them the money had been used to pay university staff instead saying they would eventually get their financial aid but that's yet to happen.
>> It was certainly emotional, obviously, yeah, because there's some exceptional faculty and and students here. And to to perhaps maybe not get to work with those individuals again, it can be distressing.
>> saying quote we are working with students, accreditors, state regulators, and the US Department of Education provide as many options as possible for students to include transfer to another higher education institution or student loan discharge. Argosy University has about 450 students currently enrolled at the Tampa campus but has more than 17,000 students enrolled at campuses across the country including in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix. As of right now, no other higher education institutions have expressed any interest in acquiring the school. That is awful. Just awful for so many people. Thank you so much, Jordan.
As someone that holds the degree from the university that Ms. Bryant reports herself to have, I have several questions and several points of clarification that will be made. The first is that the degree that she is speaking to is a doctor of education in counseling psychology from Argosy University. Argosy University was an accredited university through SACS.
SACS is the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools, and with that accreditation, they had the rights and privileges to confer the degrees that they offered including at the doctoral level.
With that accreditation as well, Parchment now holds all of the documentation from every student that attended that university. So, she has access to her transcripts indefinitely.
[music] Also, you can request a second printing of your degree.
Therefore, if she for some reason did not obtain the mailed degree that included one official copy of her transcripts, she could reach out to Parchment and obtain both as needed.
Argosy mailed those within a month of your graduation date.
Because when you obtain a doctorate, people like to verify your credentials and verify that you obtained that degree. That degree was conferred to you by an accredited university. So, they provided you one. But e again, even still, you can go to Parchment.
Moreover, with that degree, a specific degree, you had to have completed a dissertation. I know because I did it for that degree.
There are things that you should know off the top of your head, like what the title of your dissertation is. Mine is the Alabama CACREP and non-CACREP counselor education graduate students readiness to counsel substance use disorder clients.
What is yours? A major debate across social media now revolves around the distinction between being a licensed therapist versus operating as a life coach. Critics argue that marketing mental health credentials without being actively bound by a licensing board can potentially be misleading to vulnerable audiences seeking professional guidance and emotional support. Social media has had a mixed reaction with many users and licensed professionals emphasizing the need for greater public accountability, transparency, and stricter boundaries regarding therapy influencers who dispense advice online without active board supervision. On the other side of the internet, defenders argue that her years of motivational speaking, mentorship, and visible impact with high-profile clients should not be dismissed over administrative documentation disputes. Cheyenne Bryant herself has pushed back against the narrative [music] stating she does not feel obligated to prove her education to critics and attributes some of the backlash to envy. I've earned the title.
I have multiple degrees and I'm not going to prove anything to anybody. My obedience is to God, not to people. And so, as long as I'm in his will and I'm serving and I'm doing his, you know, his word, my sheep will know my voice. Even the sheep in wolf's clothing. That is not my battle. That's it.
>> that are out there, why not provide the proof of your degree? Why not? Uh, well, a couple things, right? Um, I have multiple degrees. And my thing is that my proof isn't something that I have to prove to individuals.
My proof is already within my credentials, my degrees and also more than just my titles. It's in how effective I've been. All of my sessions have been live for the most part. My sessions with Nick Cannon, Cam Newton, Shannon Sharpe, Deonna Simone, they have all been for the world to see, right? So no one knew who Dr. Bryant was prior to [music] seeing all of my sessions that were live and they deemed it as well as I did before they [music] did it. They can't validate me. I validated myself. They deemed it as my work being effective. I am effective [music] at what I do. I'm educated and I'm successful in my lane in Atlanta. This I created my own lane.
And so a lot of times, Marisa, when people see that you created something that maybe they couldn't admiration turns into envy. And you got to be okay I've gotten this question from many viewers and I I owe it to them. In service to them.
Why not drop doctor from your name?
So so so I've already covered this, right? And we're here obviously to talk about my new book.
So I've earned the title. I have multiple degrees and I'm not going to prove anything to anybody and we're going to leave leave it just as that.
Yeah. Dr. Cheyenne Bryant. Dr. Cheyenne Bryant. That's what you're standing by that. You do.
Absolutely. Baby, Dr. Cheyenne Bryant.
That's what you're standing by that.
Standing by it. Yeah, because [clears throat] I earned it. Absolutely.
Within the controversy surrounding Cheyenne Bryant also lies the mirror of shadow work reflecting back collectively onto black women. Beyond the scrutiny itself lies the shadow side of the reflection it may be holding up collectively. Time and time again black women continue to fall prey to predator gurus, queen makers, life coaches, so-called experts and professors. I want to point out how much of this ultimately comes down to structural and emotional vulnerability that is actively weaponized by people seeking authority, money, and fame. How you have ever felt outside of today, this week, how you have ever felt when you have put in the work to get the academics, get the grades, get the degrees, >> [music] >> have the lived experience, have the work professional experience, and then to be to have people try to discredit that or discredit you.
Just as a black woman, what what is that internal emotional process? We we we going to be real about what you're talking about. Not just as a black woman, but as a black woman who stand in a mount who has stood on a mountain top for our black community, who the black women audience has made me their spokesperson. I never made myself that. They loved when I was whipping the black news apart in their perspective.
They loved when I was checking them and making sure that I was standing on a mountain top speaking for all of us. I tend to see this psychological bait a lot within the black woman space [music] online. Black women uniquely navigate the intersection of systemic racism and misogyny, and historically, many have been conditioned to carry their burdens alone. When an authority figure, especially a black woman presenting herself as highly successful, healed, or an expert offers a sense of community, many black women tend to naturally gravitate towards her. These gurus tend to create so-called safe spaces, sisterhood communities, and collective healing spaces for women that are not always truly safe. The spaces often become more isolating than empowering when misplaced trust and exploitation of shared emotional struggles quietly take place behind the scenes. Critics and professionals alike point out that predatory mentors often recognize that black women are starving for spaces where they feel seen, validated, and protected. In some cases, the language of collective healing, vulnerability, and sisterhood comes weaponized to lower emotional defenses, transforming what should be a genuine support system into a high-ticket sales funnel or a space for further emotional exploitation. But the moment they get to come out the bush they were already hiding in and go, "Oh, loophole. Loophole to tear sis down."
Now, let me disclaimer, not all, but there's a small group of of black women I'm talking about, and that's that group who is now portraying as, "We hate her.
We dislike her. She's doing something negative." The bigger group of black people and women are flooding my DMs, are flooding my timeline, are saying, "Doc, we love you. Gas it. Gas it, foot doctor right." So, but to those to that group that you're referring to, it's not just me being a black woman, um but it's also me being a black woman experiencing it from my own [music] black women and black community that is where it's like, "Oh, hold on. I got to make sure that I remember my obedience is to God, not to y'all." This is where religion is used to seemingly deflect accountability. It also brings attention to the false promise of mutual upliftment that often exists within these dynamics. Black women frequently seek out mentors to help navigate economic mobility, professional sovereignty, or breaking generational trauma. This is often where the power imbalance begins to form with predatory coaches who rely on dynamics where they remain the all-knowing benefactor, sometimes using religion or spiritual authority while their followers are kept in a perpetual state of lack. Then, the guru continuously dangles the blueprint for success or healing just out of reach, requiring more money, more emotional labor, more vulnerability, or deeper submission. It creates the illusion of reciprocity while operating as extractive economic trap. This is where the guru can eventually evolve into an obvious tyrant, a fraud, an authoritarian figure, and an entity completely devoid of accountability.
Because if I make my obedience to you, then I will personalize the fact that you are attempting to crucify me >> [music] >> like the church did Jesus when Jesus just served the church. And I have to make sure that I remember that there are a bigger group of women and men, black and non-black, mostly black, love my black folks, who support me, who love me, who I do this for, that I cannot allow that noise to even [music] slightly slightly insert and take away from what these folks over here deserve, which is my village, my doc squad, and so forth. Once again, this circles back to the psychological bait. Black women are so often forced to become their own protection due to the strong black woman trope that the appeal of a powerful, structured, authoritative figure claiming to have all of the answers can become incredibly seductive and charismatic. This is the core of the alleged scam. When predatory coaches or so-called experts openly brag about not being bound by ethic boards, licensing standards, or formal oversight, claiming they are beyond the system or do not need to prove anything to anyone, that should be viewed as a major red flag.
Followers often mistake defiance for power, but without formal oversight, there is no real protection for the consumer, allowing the leader to move goalposts, rewrite reality, and escape consequences when harm is done. This also feeds into the illusion of the gated sanctuary, where the ultimate promise being sold is peace, arrival, luxury, and foundational security.
>> And even the folks, again, these wolves over here in their sheep clothing, cuz they was in the bushes waiting. And no don't nobody come out like this unless you was in the bushes waiting. Waiting, right?
>> like it. It seems like it. It Any noise brings them to my page, my website, to anything that makes them curious, that allows them to grab something that helps them, >> [music] >> then guess what? I did my job. My job is not to appease, is not to create any narrative that would help their narrative and negate. No, I want them to create all the narratives they want. I want them to double down, do it some more, and keep it going.
Because I have never experienced this much free marketing in my life. Predatory coaches also tend to use the usual healed or high vibrational aesthetic like peace, luxury lifestyles, celebrity clients, and elite connections as proof that their method works. The so-called expert carefully curates the illusion of a stable, elevated home, brand, or community in order to maintain access to that idealized social status. In many cases, followers began tolerating boundary violations, overlooking glaring credential discrepancies, and aggressively defending the leader against outside criticism. The desire to belong to what feels like an elite [music] protected circle can blind the community to the reality that the entire foundation may be built on smoke and mirrors. You're never going to believe what I just found out about Dr. Shaianne Bryant. Actually found proof that damn is Dr. Bryant. Now, her integrity may be in question, but she has her legal ducks in a row. She has had a registered trademark for Dr. Bryant since 2018. Actually with her life coaching services is 2017. Almost 10 years.
Her claim has been that she's been using the name Dr. Bryant in connection with coaching services and educational services. Where in this trademark does she say that she provides therapy? In fact, it's not even filed in that class. Her trademark is in class 41, which is an educational class.
Legally, she owns the name. [music] The trademark office is not going to ask for her degree. They're not going to ask to see her dissertation. They only check and confirm that using her trademark in a way that is it's a [music] brand.
That she is the owner of the name Dr. Bryant. That means that if someone else wants to use the name Dr. Bryant >> [music] >> in connection with life coaching services, motivational speaking services, she can stop them. [music] Legally, owns that name in connection with her brand and the services she provides. Dr. Dre is not a real doctor.
Dr. Pepper wasn't created by a real doctor. If the trademark office called her Dr. Bryant, she wants y'all to call her Dr. Bryant. Not saying it's right, but it is legal. She is going to go by Dr. Bryant. Legally, she can. The strong black woman schema leaves many women emotionally exhausted and hyper responsible. When they seek relief, traditional institutional systems like standard health care or corporate spaces often fail to offer culturally competent care, emotional safety, or true upward mobility. This creates a vacuum, an unregulated charismatic leader who uses the aesthetic of success and the promise of guidance to build an insular community while projecting an image of absolute untouchable power. The ultimate shadow of this pattern is parasitic mirroring. The coach mirrors the deep demographic wounds, desires, aspirations of black women not to genuinely heal them, but to harvest their capital, attention, loyalty, and devotion.
[music] This is why shadow work is so important.
Real healing requires discernment, self-awareness, boundaries, and the courage to question what is being sold to you in the name of empowerment. Black women deserve spaces that are truly safe, [music] reciprocal, transparent, rooted in integrity, not performance, hierarchy, or emotional dependency. The goal is not to become cynical or fearful of community mentorship or guidance, but to become conscious enough to recognize when something is nourishing your growth versus feeding off your vulnerability.
Because when black women truly heal, reclaim their discernment, and trust themselves again, [music] the illusion loses its power. This is my opinion. I'm free to state my opinion any time I like, right?
Thank you. I don't want you to feel like that, but yeah, feel like that.
