In Michigan court, violating a restricted driver's license (such as driving without a licensed adult present) is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine, but defendants can often negotiate plea bargains to lesser charges like 'impeding traffic' that carry no points and may not result in license revocation.

"YOU WERE SPEEDING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD!" — Judge Middleton Catches Driver on His Own StreetAdded:
[snorts] If they don't show up for the show cause we issue a bench warrant at one time they would just automatically issue a bench warrant and the case would just languish.
Now we try show cause some percentage of them do actually show up. Cody Smith from Homer Alaska Homer Michigan.
Homer is the end of the road in Alaska, but not in Michigan.
[clears throat] Uh, you're Cody Smith.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, very good. Thank you. Uh, you got charged with violation of a restricted license.
>> Yeah.
>> And [snorts] impeding traffic.
>> Yes.
>> I just lost Miss Campfield who would have had some maybe info about this.
Let's take a look.
While we're waiting, is Carrie Walls here?
Violation of a restricted license is a misdemeanor.
It's punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $100. So, it's not all that consequential of a charge, but it uh will cause your restrictions to be revoked. you were going 67 out in my neighborhood um at 9:00 in the morning on February 11th.
I'm not sure what the I guess rather than give you a speeding ticket, they wrote impeding traffic. So, let's take a look at your driving record.
You have a full license now. I have a permit um driver's permit working on getting my license. Um, so I was supposed to have somebody uh with a license driving with me. Um, and that was just >> all right.
>> It was a [clears throat] typically I, you know, follow the >> Don't say any more about it. But the problem is if you get this, it will undo it. So I lost my assistant prosecutor. She went out to talk about something >> impeding traffic. if he wants to do that the misdemeanor.
>> The esteemed chief assistant, Mr. Josh Rober, would agree to dismiss the uh violation, which allow you to keep your license if you plead to impeding traffic. Impeding traffic is also interesting. It doesn't carry any points and it may not undo your restricted license. So, are you willing to plead to impeding traffic?
>> Yes.
>> Thank you, Mr. Ober.
Where were you going?
>> I was going to some friends. They were going to help me out. I'm kind of in a struggling hardship moment. And [snorts] they were helping with some food and supplies.
>> All right.
All right. Defend admits.
67 is pretty fast right there.
>> Yeah. It's >> unfortunate because of my the status of my truck was that the steering power steering was out and it fortunately going around curves it tends to help to go a little faster.
>> Oh, that's great. So, we have no steering and they drive faster as the remedy to that.
>> Unfortunately, >> you're about a quarter mile from my house, so don't do that anymore. No.
>> Uh truck's gone now anyways.
ow $100 for the impede traffic.
>> Can you pay that today or do you need time to pay it?
>> I need time.
>> We'll make that due by April.
>> Okay.
>> 3rd.
>> Okay.
>> So, infractions are theoretically due within 30 days.
>> $100 and no points. This is a generous offer.
>> Yeah. from Mr. Oair, but it gets rid of the case right here this morning.
All right, you take this uh you can send in a certified check or money order.
There's instructions in there on how to pay by credit card.
Um or you can bring in green cash.
Um and uh you're good to go, sir.
>> Awesome.
>> Thank you. All right. We have one more apparent no-show.
Who is uh Harry Lynn Walls?
All right. I think that finishes our misdemeanor arrangements. [snorts] Um Mr. You got arrested on those open felony warrants. And then we have extra things here.
All right. Um Laura, [snorts] why don't you come get the uh misdemeanors and we'll segue into the felonies. [clears throat] Um, I'm going to stop the record. The live stream is still on. I'll just leave it on.
And uh, we will switch gears to our felony cases.
We've got uh, Angelie Campfield and Joshua Ober from the prosecutor's office. Got seven public defenders here.
Um, so far I've received one waiver. And this is an example of why I like to see the waiverss before they just walk out the door because there's an open warrant for Martina Iet Brinsson that we're going to need to address. Miss Brenson, would you come forward please?
case at hand here is 26 263FY people versus Martina Ivet Branson.
That's you.
>> Yes, sir.
>> You're charged in that case with retail fraud in the first degree, two counts of con conspiracy and a retail fraud that's alleged to have occurred on February 17th here in St. Joe County. You're here with your lawyer, Casey Strong. She's discussed this matter with you and you've executed a waiver of uh preliminary examination and you agree to have the matter bound over to circuit court. Is that correct?
>> Yes, sir.
All right, let's take a look at this one.
That is alleged that you and some Confederates uh did a retail fraud at Walgreens. We don't see a lot of cases from Walgreens.
Um anyway, uh you've signed that waiver.
The matter will be bound over to circuit court that'll be set for a status conference [clears throat] front of Judge Stzman at a couple of months.
bond in this matter has been set in the amount of $2,000 cash assurity which has been posted.
Uh would you give this to Miss Canfield so she could scan it in and then give it back to me?
I saw a CF, which means case filed in a new [snorts] retail fraud charge, and so I had to print that out.
>> And your honor, I do have her on a misdemeanor retail fraud scheduled for March 20th. Yes, she's got a pre-trial set for March 20th in um file 26259.
Uh again, this didn't make it into my queue, so let me pull it up the oldfashioned way.
The new charge is 26259 SM.
It's alleged that you were at the Meer store in Three Rivers and uh stole property worth less or more than 200 but less than a thousand on January 14th. So that case predates um the other one. It was authorized by Mr. Ober on January 23rd, but Officer Smalcom didn't sign it till February 19th. [clears throat] Now it's March. I didn't get it entered yet. That's not great.
Let's see what it's about.
If you'd like to go to the St. Joe County Jail. You're doing a pretty good job of it.
You got three St. Joe County retail frauds in short order. One is a felony.
That is the case. The other case is 25916.
Um, so she doesn't have an open warrant.
She just has another case pending.
>> And is that the one she is already set for the >> She's already set for the 17th.
All right. There was another case 25 916 um which was a felony reduced to a misdemeanor from October. She owes $275 in that case.
All right. So there is nothing else.
you've already got a case uh set with uh uh Miss Strong for that date.
So, you're good to go. You're not to go into the Walmart store or the Meyer store pending any further uh disposition of these matters. No Walgreens, no Meyers.
All right. So, we're still going here.
We do have a lot to do. Um, Mr. Brandt, is he here?
>> Is going to require the services of at least two certified uh ASL interpreters.
And frankly, his ASL is not all that great, but uh he'll tell you that himself.
Let's see what we do know. We've got lots of people here. Uh Mr. Workman is wandering around and I think I saw him give a uh waiver.
Um uh have we got a waiver on the bondger case?
>> Yes, your honor. Would you like me to grab my >> Yes, please.
Paul, have you had a chance to engage with Mr. Brandt yet?
>> Today, >> yesterday or earlier at the jail?
>> Uh, I mean, I've talked to him two or three times at the jail, but I didn't.
He was so adamant about wanting to use the interpreter that I [cough] wanted to wait because he would get agitated without without assigning the interpreter.
>> All right. Well, he does get agitated because he's frustrated because he can't communicate. Well, all right. Well, I'll be here shortly if they're not already here.
>> Good morning, sir. Are you Raymond Bond Trader?
>> Yes, sir.
>> Here with your lawyer, Mr. Justin Workman.
>> Morning, your honor. uh you have posted a substantial bond of $50,000 and uh I see in my hand a waiver of preliminary examination on these charges which are uh serious criminal sexual conduct charges. Uh as far as I can tell, you've complied with all the terms of your bond. Those conditions remain in effect. Are you still at the Carl's Road address?
>> No, I'm not. Um, I don't know if we have the current address. I don't want to put it here on the live stream.
>> Your honor, just for the so the court knows, we did update the new address with the clerk's office just today.
>> All right.
You don't owe the court any money.
Thank you. [snorts] >> All right. All the conditions remain in effect, including a serious one of no contact with the complaining witnesses.
Unfortunately, it's going to take some time for this matter to be scheduled for further proceedings in circuit court.
are entitled to a bond and you post to the bond.
Once again, would you ask give that to Miss Campfield so she can scan it into their system and turn it? All right, Mr. Bond Trager, the bond conditions remain in effect. You're not allowed to leave the state of Michigan. No contact with the complaining [snorts] witnesses and here for all your court appearances.
you're free to go.
This case also does require a DNA test and uh
