High gas prices for Memorial Day travel

[00:00:00]Welcome back. We are going to get in our cars and drive over Memorial Day weekend. TripleA predicting more than 45 million of us will travel by car this Memorial Day weekend. That means drivers are going to rack up miles as gas prices remain high in Northeast Ohio.

[00:00:16]>> Yeah, Annabelle Childers is live now in our studio here. So, Annabelle, I know that you spoke with AAA. Do they believe prices are going to impact the number of travelers?

[00:00:25]>> Hey guys. Well, the short answer is no.

[00:00:27]People aren't willing to sacrifice their vacations, but at the same time, gas prices are at four-year highs. I know we've been talking a lot about gas prices, but to give you today's check, the national average for gas is currently at $4.56.

[00:00:42]That's $1.38 higher than this time last year, but still under the national average on Memorial Day in 2022 when gas was $461.

[00:00:53]Today I talked to Jim Gity, a spokesperson for AAA, about how people are navigating the costs.

[00:00:59]>> It's not siphoning people's enthusiasm to get out and take that well-deserved vacation. In fact, what we t what we typically see happen when gas prices are elevated is that when people uh when people are thinking about how can we make this road trip work for our budget, they'll say, "What can we do in our day-to-day life so that we offset any of those increases?"

[00:01:19]>> And I do want to share an interesting stat with you guys. According to AAA, Ohio has one of the top 10 most expensive gas markets in the country right now. We're tied for that 9 and 10 spot with an average of $4.76 a gallon. That's 20 cents over the national average.

[00:01:37]>> Yep. I paid $4.79 this morning and that was 10 cents cheaper than the other three sta stations I saw as I passed by.
