But after releasing sperm in these massive spawning events, many male herrings become severely exhausted. Some never make it back to the deep ocean. Using the last of their strength, they trade their lives for the birth of the next generation. About 20 days later, countless eggs begin to hatch, and newborn herrings pour into the sea.
