The US Treasury Department has prepared a $250 bill featuring Donald Trump's face to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, but current federal law prohibits living persons from appearing on currency—a tradition established after the 1866 scandal when Treasury official Spencer Clark printed his own face on a 5-cent note. The proposed Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act, introduced by Representative Joe Wilson in February 2025, seeks to change this 150-year legal tradition, though it has stalled in the House Committee on Financial Services and would likely face a dead end in the Senate requiring 60 votes.

White House Pushes US Congress To Approve $250 Bill With Donald Trump’s Face On | 4KAdded:
[music] >> The no living person can be on US currency and the currency must say in God we trust.
Donald J. Trump could be on a $250 bill.
We have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law.
>> As an American, imagine opening your wallet in 2026 and pulling out a crisp green note worth $250.
But instead [music] of a historical figure like Washington or Lincoln, you see a familiar face staring right back at you.
Donald Trump.
The US Treasury Department has confirmed it's already laying the groundwork for this new denomination that would mark the nation's 250th anniversary. But there is a major problem. Under current law, this bill is illegal. This is the story of the Donald Trump $250 Bill Act, a proposal that seeks to overturn 150 years of American legal tradition to put a living president on the national ledger.
If we go by the rule book, the federal law says that only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency.
Interestingly, it's a law born from a 19th century scandal.
Back in 1866, a Treasury official named Spencer Clark caused national outrage when he printed his own face on a 5-cent note.
Since then, the faces of American money have exclusively belonged to those who have [music] passed away.
Despite the law, the current Treasury Department is moving fast.
Secretary Scott Bessent says they have already created the bill and prepared in advance so that if Congress changes the law, the currency is ready to roll out.
>> As Treasury Secretary, I I have two mandates for US currency. At present, the no living person can be on US currency, and the currency must say "In God We Trust."
So, right now there is proposed legislation that from the House, in front of the Senate, to change the first requirement so that a living person, Donald J. Trump, could be on the $250 bill. So, it it It's all in the hands of the It's It's all in up on Capitol Hill. So, at Treasury, we prepare things in advance. [music] So, we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law.
>> The man leading the charge in Congress is Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina.
His role is centered on introducing and advocating for the Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act, which he officially brought to the House on February 27, 2025.
But, will you ever actually spend one?
The legislative reality says unlikely.
The bill has stalled in the House Committee on Financial Services, and would likely face a dead end in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes [music] to pass. House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries captured the opposition sentiment, stating that the anniversary of American independence is about our national journey, not about a wannabe king.
For now, the Treasury is sticking to the law, but they've made one thing clear.
If the law changes, they are ready to print.
