[00:00:00]It's time to shop for groceries. And where are we shopping today? In Austria.

[00:00:05]I love these videos because when we first came to Spain, I mean, one of the coolest things was actually going to a grocery store that wasn't in the United States and realizing that there were so many differences. So, it's pretty cool.

[00:00:16]You can get an idea of the different foods that are available that may not be available where you are. So, I think this is going to be a lot of fun.

[00:00:35]I'm sure they would appreciate that. So, this is going to be a lot of fun. Before we get going here, go ahead and like the video. That really helps a lot. Let's see what we can see.

[00:00:45]Ladies and gentlemen, today we go on a full tour of an Austrian supermarket right here in Vienna where we will be on the lookout for some of the unique items that we can't find.

[00:00:58]>> Oh, cute little baby.

[00:01:00]That's so cute. They uh this this channel does great content. They I think my wife and I watched one of their videos about the UK doing the same thing going to the grocery store. So, and they're funny. This is going to be good >> other countries as well as the cost of some staple foods because we are back in a country using the euro and it can be fun to compare the cost of living because so many countries use the same currency.

[00:01:29]>> Okay, let's go.

[00:01:31]>> And so when you walk in the front door, it's fruit and veggies naturally, but amongst the fruit and veggies, we have some beer. And this beer >> Oh, that's interesting. Here is half liter for 69.

[00:01:45]What the heck? Is Austria trying to be my new favorite country or something?

[00:01:49]Look at this. 55 cent for a half liter.

[00:01:53]>> Oh my god.

[00:01:54]>> Wow.

[00:01:56]That is unbelievable. I mean, I haven't been obviously to the US in whatever three years, something like that. So, I don't know what the prices look like over there now. I mean, I I have friends that share photos and things like that, so I know it's crazy.

[00:02:13]But when I was there, you couldn't find anything in the store for less than a dollar. I mean, nothing. Like, not a candy bar, a piece of cheese, there was nothing. Maybe like an apple maybe, or banana or something, but nothing was less than a dollar. And we see this all the time. Things that are, you know, one euro or, you know, one50 or, you know, so it's it's it's still a shock sometimes, especially that that's crazy.

[00:02:42]>> Canada, it's a lot more.

[00:02:44]>> Yeah, that's like I mean, we should get 10. We should get 15.

[00:02:50]>> And so, back to fruit and veggies like I originally intended. Now, what we'll do here is we'll try to remember some of these prices because Austria will be the first country for us in a bit of a Euro trip, meaning next we're going to Budapest in a few days. Then we're going to Romania, I think. Then we'll catch a flight over to London. So, more than a few European countries coming up. And so, we'll try to remember these prices and compare. Now, one thing we notice here in Austria is a lot of products say bio on them. You see that BIO? And they're typically a lot more expensive than the non-bio. So we're assuming bio means organic obviously because uh big price difference although it must be popular here in Austria because fruits, veggies, eggs and even oil can be bio.

[00:03:38]>> So must be a trendy thing.

[00:03:40]>> I'm trying to think have bio stuff like that in Spain.

[00:03:46]any of my Spain fellow brothers and sisters, Armanos and Armanas. Hopefully I said that right. Um, is that do we have bio?

[00:04:02]Can't remember. I can't remember. But I do know that in the United States it's probably similar to this that the more organic or healthier food costs a lot lot lot more thing in Austria organic options. And from there the next thing we see is the cheese section which just made me hungry >> because it is a good size cheese section. Man, some of the cheese looks so good with that little bit of like almost skin on the outside.

[00:04:34]Oh man, I'm getting I'm getting hungry.

[00:04:37]Yeah, real cheese. Exactly. Real cheese, not processed. Sheep cheese.

[00:04:42]>> Sheep.

[00:04:42]>> Traditional.

[00:04:44]>> We have that here, but it doesn't say sheep. That's why I was shocked. That's why I was confused. Obviously, it says, "Oh god, why am I just putting myself on the spot, embarrassing myself that I don't know how to say sheep or in Spanish?" Oh god, this is horrible.

[00:05:06]>> Comes in a metal can. It's heavy, too.

[00:05:10]Oh man, this would be so good.

[00:05:13]>> Oh, look. It's got a top on it like a tuna can. It's heavy. No.

[00:05:18]>> Yeah. Oh, this will be so good.

[00:05:22]Let me get it. Just eat it.

[00:05:24]>> Yeah. So good.

[00:05:30]It's so heavy.

[00:05:32]>> It's 1500 g.

[00:05:34]>> Wow.

[00:05:40]>> Heavy cuz they keep the liquid in there.

[00:05:41]>> Liquid in there, too. I think it's in in liquid.

[00:05:43]>> Mhm. I think so.

[00:05:43]>> I never saw cheese like that.

[00:05:46]>> Canned cheese.

[00:05:50]Wow. Look good, right?

[00:05:51]>> Yeah.

[00:05:52]>> And so right beside the cheese section, you got the sausage section.

[00:05:56]>> Where they've got sausages for every kind of person. Even a mix and match pack. Look at that. That looks good, right?

[00:06:04]>> You got the white ones, you got the ones wrapped in bacon, the dark ones.

[00:06:10]It's a good looking sausage pack for a barbecue party.

[00:06:13]>> Wow. And so at this point, we got to give a big shout out to Google Translate >> because we know that burst means sausage, right?

[00:06:19]>> Uhhuh.

[00:06:20]>> But there's many different kinds of burst.

[00:06:21]>> Oh yeah.

[00:06:22]>> So the one over there is called spreadable sausage.

[00:06:26]>> Oo.

[00:06:26]>> Guess that's like pante.

[00:06:27]>> Oh, >> whereas this one is smoked sausage.

[00:06:33]>> Smoked.

[00:06:34]>> So already cooked. Look how good that looks, right?

[00:06:36]>> Oh, I just got it.

[00:06:38]>> Whereas the one I showed you before, the mix pack, >> barbecue sausage.

[00:06:42]>> M. So, we usually don't get those.

[00:06:44]>> So many different kinds.

[00:06:45]>> They look good.

[00:06:46]>> Meat lovers paradise.

[00:06:47]>> That baby is so dang cute.

[00:06:50]>> Oh, and look at that. They got all the fridges over here for the real cheese.

[00:06:53]And then not in the fridge is the American cheese because it doesn't go bad because it's not even made out of cheese.

[00:07:00]>> Oh, wow.

[00:07:01]>> No dairy involved in the American cheese with the American flag on it.

[00:07:06]>> Oh wow. I have not seen that in Spain.

[00:07:11]Now, when I think about it, uh, no, I have not seen that.

[00:07:18]>> That's funny. Doesn't have to go in the fridge. And from there, we'll go into the meat section.

[00:07:25]Proper raw meat. And you'll notice a lot of the labels have the Austrian flag and a heart on them. So, I think they're local meat.

[00:07:32]>> I think Austrian people are taking pride in their local quality meat.

[00:07:36]>> Okay.

[00:07:36]>> It seems like it's a reason to purchase it. like it's a like it's an advertising uh feature, you know.

[00:07:44]>> Oh, wow. Check it out, everybody. They got picana.

[00:07:49]>> Pana.

[00:07:51]>> This is the number one cut of beef in Brazil.

[00:07:54]>> Oh, wow.

[00:07:55]>> Pa.

[00:07:55]>> So, you'll notice this one doesn't say uh locally made. This must be imported.

[00:08:00]Wow. I can't believe they got picana. It must be popular. There's only one left.

[00:08:04]>> Oh, there's two left.

[00:08:05]>> Never heard of.

[00:08:06]>> Wow. Pica here in Austria.

[00:08:07]>> Small piece though. It's a small piece of vagana.

[00:08:09]>> Oh, and look at that, Ivana. They even got chev.

[00:08:13]>> Wow.

[00:08:14]>> Yeah. Look good, right?

[00:08:15]>> Yeah.

[00:08:16]>> In Romania, they're called mech. In uh Turkey, they're called jave. So good.

[00:08:20]>> Can't beat them.

[00:08:22]>> And I think the meat prices in general in Austria are pretty low. No, meat is pretty affordable.

[00:08:26]>> Reasonable.

[00:08:27]>> Reasonably priced, I would say.

[00:08:28]>> Yeah, I really think meat in Austria is a good price. This is €10 for a huge chunk of pork. Look at that.

[00:08:37]one.

[00:08:38]>> I don't know. I think prices here are less expensive than that.

[00:08:42]>> 5 kgs with a little bit of >> seasoning in there for €10. It's good, right?

[00:08:48]>> I think uh meat is affordable in Austria.

[00:08:52]>> Yeah, >> quite good.

[00:08:54]>> Although it would say >> Oh, wow.

[00:08:56]>> The jelly meat.

[00:08:58]>> Jelly meat.

[00:08:59]>> The hell?

[00:09:02]>> Honestly, it's probably good, but I have >> I've never heard or seen that. Heard of or seen that?

[00:09:12]H all my Austrian friends out there, what is what is that? And how does it taste?

[00:09:19]>> Yeah. It just seems like, you know, I've never tried.

[00:09:23]>> In Canada, we don't really eat that.

[00:09:25]>> I think it's collagen.

[00:09:27]>> Good for your skin.

[00:09:27]>> Really good. I mean, I probably like the flavor.

[00:09:29]>> Yeah.

[00:09:30]>> But just looks like Oh gosh, it's scary.

[00:09:33]No.

[00:09:34]Yeah.

[00:09:38]>> Oh my goodness me. Austria officially my favorite country.

[00:09:43]>> Look at that >> beer mustard.

[00:09:46]>> Beer mustard.

[00:09:51]>> Oh, that's like my two favorite things.

[00:09:53]They got >> Well, hold on. Cuz if that's beer mustard, then is the one next to it. I guess that's grill mustard because it says symph.

[00:10:09]But maybe it's throwing me off because it's red. I'm expecting it to be barbecue or something. I I mean know ketchup or something. But wow.

[00:10:19]Why am I looking at that? I don't know.

[00:10:24]>> That's like my two favorite things. They got something called beer mustard.

[00:10:27]>> Oh my. Wow.

[00:10:32]>> What's for dinner? I think beer mustard.

[00:10:34]It's €1, Ivana. I mean, we got to buy the beer mustard. Plus, it comes in one of those metal tubes, which only I see in Europe. We got to buy beer mustard. I mean, come on.

[00:10:44]>> Now, this this is what I'm talking about.

[00:10:47]>> Oh, yeah.

[00:10:48]>> Cuz we haven't seen any sliced bread yet, like uh Wonderbread, for instance.

[00:10:53]>> But the bakery section is huge and the smell is amazing. And these pretzels are jumping off the screen, Ivana.

[00:11:00]>> Oh my gosh. Oh yeah. Oh my god. They are pretzels.

[00:11:03]>> They're half a year.

[00:11:04]>> I know. Those are so >> if you send pretzels. I mean, >> look at that. Look how huge that bakery is. That's how it is here, too. They baked baked fresh every day.

[00:11:15]And there were bakeries in the US.

[00:11:19]But I never bought any branded from there. The only thing I went to the bakery for was some cake, some cupcakes or something like that.

[00:11:29]But never bought bread from from a b Oh my god. Try and say that fast. Never bought bread from a b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b bakery when I was in the US. I just never did.

[00:11:44]>> What should we get? Six or you want to get 10?

[00:11:50]>> Look good, right?

[00:11:51]>> Yeah.

[00:11:52]>> Oh, yeah. I tell you what, so far it's been a good experience in the Austrian supermarket. But one thing I can't figure out is what they're selling the locations.

[00:12:00]>> Yeah.

[00:12:01]>> Right here is sandals, paper towel, and bread. It's almost like a random layout.

[00:12:10]>> Look here. This is a trimmer for the >> right beside the beer section. So maybe you do some yard work and then have a few beers. And that's the idea.

[00:12:21]And so at this point, I will ask for your guys' help if you're Austrian because the beer prices are so affordable. It's blowing my mind, but I don't actually know the good Austrian beer. I've heard of Steigle, which is the red and white, and I've heard of Gothur. I'm sure my pronunciation is horrible, but I don't know which is the actual beer that Austrians are drinking.

[00:12:42]In any case, it's so affordable. It's like 1 can. It's awesome. And I guess right beside the beer is the chip section, which is so small. In Canada, this whole shelf would be chips.

[00:12:53]Probably both sides of the aisle would be chips. Over here, they got like five or six flavors. That's it.

[00:12:58]>> Yeah, that's the same as here in Spain.

[00:13:01]The chip selection is pretty limited. I mean, I don't know.

[00:13:07]Well, it's more limited than in the US, but it's it's not horrible. There's a few you can choose from. They have like, you know, two uh two sometimes three different like flavors of uh I guess you would call it like a like a Dorito, like a uh like a tortilla chip or something like that. Um but really they just have two plain and cheese. And right now they have like some special. So, they have three right now, but they don't really have very many Cheetos or they have one thing that looks like Cheetos and it's like 85 cents or something like that, which is just amazing. Like a regular full bag.

[00:13:52]I think Austrian people are eating real food more often. Like they're eating meat that was a big section, cheese was a big section, and bread was a big section.

[00:14:01]>> But like potato chips is I mean three or four flavors. Although for chips, I think Austrian people loves paprika flavor. Paprika. Paprika. Paprika.

[00:14:11]>> Paprika. Paprika. Paprika.

[00:14:12]>> All paprika.

[00:14:14]>> Yeah, you're right. All paprika.

[00:14:15]>> And that's because it's more natural. I I remember from the video we were watching about the horrible food in the United States that the they had this yellow chemical. I forget the exact name of it that was for mac and cheese. And in Europe they use it was paprika and forget the other thing was it uh but but I remember that was one of the things that was like cheese colored or flavored. So that's probably why probably it's better for you. Imagine that.

[00:14:49]>> Favorite flavors >> different snack but always the same flavor.

[00:14:53]>> Yeah.

[00:14:53]>> Yeah. Interesting. Good one. And so this is one of the bigger supermarkets we found near our accommodation.

[00:15:00]>> And yet it's quite small. No.

[00:15:01]>> Yeah.

[00:15:02]>> I think this is one of the biggest cultural differences from Canada or North America to Europe.

[00:15:07]>> Mhm.

[00:15:07]>> We take a car, usually a big truck, >> to a super massive store and we buy tons of processed food.

[00:15:15]>> In Europe, they take a bicycle to a small store and they buy meat and cheese and bread, >> including bread.

[00:15:21]>> Baguettes.

[00:15:22]>> Yeah. Baguettes and other kind of nice looks. They have zero sliced bread in this whole store.

[00:15:27]>> In Canada, we have a huge shelf left to right, all just sliced bread, Wonderbread and Dempsters, and all this sort of low quality bread.

[00:15:34]>> Over here, it's all fresh.

[00:15:36]>> That's true.

[00:15:38]>> That's true. I think we have we only have white bread and wheat bread. Just like one brand, that's it.

[00:15:46]if if you want to buy like pre-made sliced bread and I think the white bread has like you know two different options.

[00:15:54]You can get a full loaf or a half loaf and then wheat bread. Uh there might be like some other like uh multi-grain or something like that. But in terms of like white bread, there's just one brand. In terms of all of the types of sliced bread that there are, there's just one brand, not multiple. Like in the US, oh my god, you can spend like probably 10 minutes on the bread aisle trying to figure out which one you want.

[00:16:20]Now for the moment of truth. We're gonna take a look at the cost >> shelf left to right. All just sliced bread, Wonderbread, and dumpsters and all this sort of lowquality bread.

[00:16:30]>> Over here, it's all fresh.

[00:16:34]>> And so we ended up buying a lot of stuff.

[00:16:37]>> We spent €55.

[00:16:39]>> Oo, that looks delicious.

[00:16:42]Oh my god, my wife would love that. She She always loves like pickled like pickled onions and things like that. So, >> because they got good looking stuff in the store, but >> we did not find baby formula.

[00:16:58]>> Oh, >> which is very important. Or the baby.

[00:17:01]So, I think we're going to bring you guys along to Villa Plus, which is not far from here. Hoping they have uh baby.

[00:17:10]>> All right. So, we were able to find >> What the heck? I mean, obviously I don't have to look for baby formula, so I'm trying to remember if we see it here.

[00:17:20]Uh, it has to be here in Spain. I'm talking I know it's baby food.

[00:17:27]Yeah, I I stay as far away as possible from the kids section. I don't want I don't want to get anything to rub off on me or or my wife or anything. The factory has closed. We're not trying to have no more kids. But anyway, >> uh, baby formula.

[00:17:49]>> All right. So, we were able to find formula for baby G >> which is important. But I got to continue because >> this is a pretzel.

[00:17:58]>> Uh-huh.

[00:17:58]>> You see? Look good.

[00:18:00]>> This is beer mustard. If you can believe it. I think there's beer in this. All the ingredients. I've used Google Translate. It says 16% beer.

[00:18:13]>> I don't know if that means the beer is 16% alcohol.

[00:18:18]Like crazy strong beer >> or this tube has 16% of beer in it.

[00:18:23]>> One thing I know.

[00:18:24]>> Wow. That's a lot of mustard.

[00:18:28]>> Oh my god. It's so good.

[00:18:35]>> A little bit.

[00:18:45]And oh my god, that stuff over there.

[00:18:50]That's interesting.

[00:18:52]It that little plate over there looks Mediterranean.

[00:18:56]Uh with the tomatoes and Well, that was probably that jar that he had. And look at that view, man. That'd be great.

[00:19:11]>> Oh, it's so good. I could eat this all day.

[00:19:15]>> Just pretzels and beer.

[00:19:16]>> A lot of people come here for schnitle, you know, fine dining at a restaurant. I say stay at your Airbnb and eat mustard.

[00:19:23]>> Wow. So good. Fivestar mustard.

[00:19:25]>> Oh wow.

[00:19:26]>> Sixstar mustard. It's so good.

[00:19:28]>> You're so funny.

[00:19:31]>> Five star mustard.
