I Found a Very Interesting Plaque Inside this Church.

[00:00:01]Hi everyone. I thought I'd make this small video as I found something really interesting inside this church's porch.

[00:00:08]I haven't seen anything like it before.

[00:00:10]The full tour of this magnificent church will be coming soon, but I didn't want to make it too long, so I thought it was best I made this separate video.

[00:00:20]There's an old stone plaque hanging on the wall.

[00:00:23]There's no date on it, but I think it's a few hundred years old by the language written on it.

[00:00:29]And it's the degrees of marriage. I thought it was really cool, so I hope you enjoy it, too.

[00:00:44]I'll try my best to read this for you.

[00:00:46]It's not that easy. But here it goes.

[00:00:49]Degrees of marriage or an admonition to all such as shall intend hereafter to enter into the state of matrimony godly and agreeably to the laws.

[00:01:00]Firstly, that they contract not with such persons as be hereafter expressed.

[00:01:06]Nor with any of the like degree against the law of God and the laws of the people.

[00:01:12]Secondly, that they make no secret contracts without consent or control of their parents or elders. Whole authority they be contrary to God's laws and man's ordinances.

[00:01:25]Thirdly, that they contract not anew with any other upon divorce and separation by the judge for a time, the laws yet pending to the contract.

[00:01:36]And then there's a list of 29 people you cannot marry. I'll just read out the man's list as the woman's is the same, but in reverse.

[00:01:46]A man may not marry his grandmother, grandfather's wife, wife's grandmother, father's sister, mother's sister, father's brother's wife, mother's brother's wife, wife's father's sister, wife's mother's sister, mother, stepmother, wife's mother, daughter, wife's daughter, son's wife, sister, wife's sister, brother's wife, son's daughter, daughter's daughter, son's son's wife, daughter's son's wife, wife's son's daughter, brother's daughter, sister's daughter, brother's son's wife, wife's brother's daughter, and wife's father's daughter.

[00:02:47]Now, that's quite a list, and most are pretty obvious.

[00:02:51]I'm sure not all of those are banned now. For example, marrying your stepmother, or even marrying your wife's grandmother.

[00:03:00]I'm sure it's been done, and I'm not judging, but what's all that about?
