One, beginning of ancient India. The history of India is believed to be around 5,000 years old. Historians divide Indian history into three major periods.
Ancient India, medieval India, ancient Indian history begins with the Indus Valley civilization.
Two, Indus Valley civilization. The Indus Valley civilization was one of the oldest and most advanced civilizations in the world. It developed around 2,500 BC along the banks of the Indus River.
Its major cities included Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, Lothal, Dholavira, Kalibangan. The greatest feature of this civilization was its well-planned cities. There were wide roads, drainage systems, public baths, and granaries.
People made pottery, traded goods, and practiced agriculture. They cultivated wheat, barley, and cotton. Their trade extended as far as Mesopotamia.
Historians believe that the civilization declined due to natural disasters or changes in river routes. Three, Vedic period. After the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization, the Vedic period began in India. During this time, the Aryans arrived and composed the Vedas, which is why this era is called the Vedic Age. The four major Vedas are Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda. The Rigveda is considered the oldest Veda. Society during this period was divided into four classes: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras.
Agriculture and cattle rearing were the main occupations. People worshipped natural forces and deities such as Agni, Indra, and Varuna. The Gurukul system of education was popular, where students lived in the teacher's house to gain knowledge. Four, Mahajanapada period around 600s. 16 Mahajanapadas, large kingdoms, emerged in India. Among them, Magadha became the most powerful kingdom. During this period, two major religions were born. Buddhism and Jainism. Five, Gautama Buddha Gautama Buddha was born in Lumbini. His childhood name was Siddhartha. After witnessing human suffering, he left his palace in search of truth and enlightenment. After years of meditation, he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. He preached non-violence, compassion, and the middle path.
Buddhism later spread throughout Asia.
Six, Mahavira. Mahavira was the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. He taught truth, non-violence, and self-discipline.
