When multiple refrigeration controllers in a rack system simultaneously show device absence alarms, the issue is typically a network infrastructure problem rather than individual controller failures; technicians should systematically check the network switch and ribbon cable connections, as a disconnected or malfunctioning network switch will cause all connected controllers to appear offline, similar to how a home network switch connects multiple devices.

What the Ladies and gentlemen, we are back.
Or maybe.
I don't know if we are or not.
Today we got a call for all of this.
All this device absent.
See today's date, happened this morning.
All right. You can see happened this morning.
Looks like it's been happening. Today, yesterday, day before.
Bunch of device absences. Subcool, low temp.
What do we got going on here?
Subcool, medium temp, low temp, low temp, medium temp.
I don't know how that make medium temp, low temp.
Medium What the hell is all this? What's going on here?
It looks like all the same thing.
Alarms were reset on the 28th.
So this one might not be easy to figure out.
Let's see. If we go home, okay.
Go to our network. Nope.
Alt N is what I was looking for.
I have no status over here. What's going on here?
Oh, okay. So low temp, medium temp, that's our controllers.
Subcool, medium temp, low temp.
Are our controllers.
>> Am I tripping right now?
Oh, controller just froze up on me.
Okay, well, that might be some of our issue right there, huh?
Let's give her a second to see if she wants to figure herself out.
And this is what it decided to do, so I guess we'll um wait for this to reboot. While it's doing that, I'm going to go ahead open this up. I'm going to check this ribbon cable real quick.
That's not good. I don't like that.
A little long, huh?
It's all right.
Check this ribbon cable real quick. Make sure this is good and it's in there.
Seems like it.
So, we'll let that start back up.
Um waiting on that. This is what it should look like.
Right? So, if I go from here, if I go alt and you can see my status. It shows everything online. So, that's what I was looking for on the other one. Obviously, that one's not here.
So, with this, I mean, right off the bat, I'm thinking that this controller's probably taking a [ __ ] and that's why we're having issues.
Um So, we're back to this. It started back up.
So, this this is all of our alarms from this morning and last night, it looks like. All these device absent alarms. Let's see. If I go all in now.
All right. So, it's still trying to pull some of this back on, but you can see that's online.
So, with this being how it is, more than likely this is our issue right here, right? Something else you can look for if you're having So, just like with uh refrigeration, right?
Man, I keep getting phone calls. Every time I start talking, I get a phone call. All right. So, this thing pulled everything back in, right? So, you can see everything's online. More than likely, like I said, this controller is going bad, um and that's what our issue is. Something else that you could look at is your switch, which is not this.
Uh the switch is probably going to be Let's see.
I don't know why I opened this.
So, it's going to be your networking switch, just like you have at your house. Come on, baby.
All right. So, if we take that, we follow that up.
That goes up to there and shoots over here.
Uh boom.
Into here.
Right there. That's your switch right here.
Right? So, this is what ties all of your controllers together. Together, right?
So, that's your FSD. That's for our FSD panel up front. That's for So, our um uh uh uh uh This ain't even plugged in.
So, what is this doing?
Nothing.
Why is this unplugged?
This is basically supposed to bring all your controllers online, right?
Or not online, but but show them.
Why is that unplugged? Am I tripping?
I don't think so.
But, what I was going to say is just like with the refrigeration circuit, right? If I'm having an issue, say with all of my cases on my rack, I'm not going to just go to one case and start trying to diagnose why my whole rack's running warm, right? I'm going to go to the rack. I'm probably low on gas or I got compressors off or whatever.
Multiple circuits on my rack is tip running warm is typically a rack issue, right? Same thing with this.
Multiple circuits or yeah, multiple circuits on my network probably not just a controller issue. It might be because this one's having issues, but typically what I like to look at is where my common point is. And my common point is right here.
I don't know why this is unplugged.
I don't like that it's unplugged.
Everything's still online.
I mean, I guess we plug it in.
What's the worst that could happen, huh?
Let's see.
Let's see what happens.
Worst that could happen Worst thing that could happen is it'll break more than it already is, right?
Which is okay.
So, let's plug that in. Let's leave that.
And now we're just going to kind of watch and see what happens.
And I'll turn this thing on if anything happens or when something happens, whatever.
All right. So, it's been a few minutes.
I've been playing with this thing just like opening and closing it. Trying to see if I can get that screen to reset again. Um I did come in and just like make sure that this ribbon cable was seated good.
Make sure everything was clamped. Um a lot of the times that's what that issue is is your ribbon cable. Let me [ __ ] put this in here.
Come on, baby, get in there.
There we go.
Is that ribbon cable is not like making good connection, so it'll cause that.
Um I have a feeling this is what our issue was. Uh you can see right there, network router.
AKA network switch. Um I don't know why this wasn't plugged in.
They're supposed to be plugged in.
I mean, somebody would have I mean, that thing's in there. Somebody would have had to unplug this.
Um I called a guy that's very familiar with this customer and asked him if this customer does something where their routers are unplugged and he said he also said no, they should be plugged in.
Uh but my next question is kind of like who made these cables? Number one, gross. Look at those things.
Gross.
Whatever.
Um my next question would be, well, how the [ __ ] has it been working without this thing plugged in? And that I don't know.
That is a question that I don't have an answer to.
But But yeah, so I think that's what our issue was was that router. I think this uh this controller resetting was just me was just a [ __ ] I don't know, something else. Uh but I am going to pick up one of these ribbon cables. And by ribbon cable, I mean this thing right here.
I am going to grab one of these. I'll keep one on me.
Um and if we have an issue with this controller like that again, we'll try just replacing that ribbon cable first.
And then um see what happens, but Oh, there's 135. I thought it still said what R22 over there. All the heads are blue. Whatever. This thing ain't running anyway. I don't know why.
Oh, it is running.
That one's running for sure. That's good.
Yeah, so honestly, I think that's what our issue was was that network switch.
Why it was unplugged, I don't know, but I'm just going to tell the store that I think I fixed it and just give us a call if it happens again. So, um as always, like, subscribe, share, do the thing, and uh yeah, thanks. Later.
