Baby gorillas who are still exclusively breastfed have natural protection against illness, similar to human infants, and will gradually develop their own immune resistance as they begin eating solid foods.

Santaro won’t get sick for a while. Not like me, Ryan.|Momotaro family , gorillaAdded:
Hi! I am GL - Ryan.
This is Ryan, speaking with a stuffy nose.
My voice sounds different than usual.
Genki - san, 39 years old.
Baby boy, Santaro.
Five month old baby.
I’ve got a bit of a cold right now.
On the other hand, the Momotaro family hasn’t had a cold in the past five years.
As I’ve mentioned before, this is because the keepers changed the gorillas’ diet.
Rather than focusing on nutrition, they’re feeding them the same foods that wild gorillas eat.
Momotaro, 25 years old.
Kintaro, 7 years old.
Actually, Santaro can probably walk on his own by now.
It’s up to Genki to decide.
If the gorillas catch a cold, the medicine is the same as what’s prescribed for humans.
They don’t have the same resistance to infectious diseases that we do.
That’s why it’s not a good idea to shout or talk to them in front of the gorillas.
If the bacteria we carry are transmitted to them, they can become seriously ill.
In Santaro’s case, since he is still drinking his mother’s milk, he is less likely to get sick.
Just like humans, once he starts eating on his own, he will gradually build up his own resistance to disease.
I have one question.
Since gorillas are great apes, it’s only natural for humans to find baby gorillas cute.
For domesticated animals like dogs, cats, and horses, being perceived as cute by humans is advantageous.
On the other hand, why do we find the babies of non-domesticated animals cute?
We find the babies of animals from different species cute, don’t we?
If so, do other animals also find human babies cute?
Given the differences in intelligence, it’s hard to say this applies universally to all animals.
But in the case of other great apes, or domesticated animals that have coexisted with humans for many years, it’s certainly possible.
Santaro is making a face that shows he doesn’t like it.
He’s gradually starting to show a bit of his own personality, isn’t he?
Even a baby this small will grow up to be as big as Momotaro in 15 years.
That’s impossible for a human at this rate of growth.
We still don’t know Santaro’s weight.
We won’t know until Santaro steps on the scale by himself.
The zookeepers absolutely refuse to separate Genki and Santaro just to weigh them.
There’s a spot on the other side of the concrete that Santarou is touching where water comes out.
Come summer, Santarou will be able to play in the flowing water.
All narrations are created using my own voice, I, Ryan.
