United's Champions League Budget, Carrick's Future, Midfield Rebuild

[00:00:00]Hello and welcome to another Daily Muppet. In today's video, I just want to catch up on some of the major subjects of the last week or so. Now that the season is essentially concluded from the standpoint of meaningful games and qualifications, what United can achieve, of course, we're not in any cups, not in any further competitions, and we have secured Champions League. So while technically there's the play for a couple of positions on the table and a point or something like that secures third.

[00:00:29]The season is effectively over in that sense. And so of course now the question becomes what happens next? And I just want to talk through some of the basic news that's ongoing at the moment and uh what we're hearing, what's going on and uh what's happening. And a little later today, I will also be doing a live, depending on when you watch this, it'll be later today, but later from when this is published, I'll be doing a live to talk through some of the latest stories as well as get some uh fan thoughts and have people come in and do call-ins on the thing and such, which I want to do weekly throughout the summer, just so people can always share their thoughts on how things are going, how they're feeling, all of that, and give people a a voice. So, uh, let's start with this though, the Champions League budget. Now that United have secured Champions League, obviously the question is what is the budget? And United have done quite well this year to limit the amount of reports with regards to what the budget actually is. It's kind of funny because in years past, you might have seen a lot of reports say, you know, United have 100 million to spend, United have 50 million to spend, United have 150 million to spend. And while those reports tend to end up being pretty stretched and adjustable and they change regularly and all of that, we did get them. And I noticed uh interestingly enough that we've had really really few of those types of reports right now. In fact, virtually none. Uh when you look at most of the reports that are out there, people say, "I don't know what the budget is, how much money you have to spend. We really don't know. Most people can't even make an estimate at this point." I can tell you from my information that United do have the ability to spend around 250.

[00:02:04]That uh is including on some regularly counted on sales. Um, but potentially it is even more than that. And I'm not saying like that. Again, this is this is an estimation, but uh I do believe United's budget is fairly significant this summer with the bringing in of Champions League. Uh I understand the way that they budgeted their summers in the in the previous year without Champions League with the adjustments that have been made to the overall finances and where things stand based on the last reports that we have seen. the extra funds coming in. That is uh really likely to be the minimum sort of budget that they can get with expected sales that are coming in. And I don't even mean potentially there's additional ones that could stretch it even further, but I do expect United will spend not net but somewhere in the range of 250 million this summer. Now, that being said, one of the challenges that United do face this summer that is real is the uh cash problem. At the same time, while there is a fairly significant uh amount by way of uh funds available from a from an availability standpoint, from a measurable standpoint, you know, the way that you you stretch out purchases over 5 years on the books, it'll all work out in the end if United spend that kind of money.

[00:03:22]But whether they can perform deals and and within that will also certainly depend on cash. if they have to pay, you know, 80 million upfront for a player, that probably takes most of the budget, you know, so it's it's not really as simple as looking at it as total budgets. The cash is very important.

[00:03:41]What they get paid in terms of sales on that sense is very important. And when we get to the end, sponsors is also going to be very important as well. So, um, because they can get more immediate funding on that side of it. Uh, take loans out against some future revenues, things like that. just to improve the immediate cash flow uh and keep the books kind of balanced. But United have a very significant budget of that in talking about the mid there was one report kind of suggesting some sort of budget for the midfield. I'm not sure it's totally accurate, but essentially there's there's a few different things that have been set out there. One is that United would look to buy oops in the range of uh you know two bigger 70 80 million midfielders and that would be kind of the goal. and another saying they have about 150 or so to spend in the midfield. And look, to a degree, yes, that is the estimated amount of their budget they would like to put towards the midfield. Now, how that tears itself down, how it spreads itself out is uh fairly interesting. And one of the reasons that United are sort of not stepping away but keeping an attentive eye on but not feeling very optimistic or like they're wanting to put all their eggs in the basket in terms of Elliot Anderson now is because as I understand it you know City's proposal uh that they're looking to is somewhere in the range north of 100 million. Now, if United are to do that, then the bulk of their budget is going to go to that player and they're going to be in a financial and cash race with City as well, which makes it really, really difficult to get sort of a a deal done there. But it also limits entirely what they can do. Looking at other targets that are available, even if they're going for someone like Chumeni um in the view of 70 to 80 million and interesting noise there as apparently another fight has broken out at Real Madrid's training ground. Believe it or not, not a parody.

[00:05:29]This is real news. Apparently, another fight has broken out at Real Madrid training ground between Fed Valv and Chumenni. So, clearly all is not well in Madrid and uh maybe this provides an extra opportunity or a uh departure.

[00:05:44]Certainly, something's going to happen when there is chaos at Madrid.

[00:05:50]So, in there there is opportunity. Now, if United can secure their their main signing of a Chuamini or someone like that for 70 to 80 million, then they would look to bring in potentially two more signings. And these would be from the bracket of Alaba, Matas Fernandez, Alex Scott, Xiao Gomez, Ederson, and I feel like I'm missing somebody from that list as well, uh, off the top of my head, but they have other names as well that they've, uh, that they've looked at that we've discussed in in recent times.

[00:06:19]But the idea would be, you know, potentially to bring in three by being able to stretch the budget from uh with the potential sale of Emanuel Larte, which is a very likely thing to happen.

[00:06:30]Ugarte has interest from Turkey, has interest from Italy. He certainly wants a fresh start and I don't think we'll have an issue of all players desperate to stay, things like that this summer.

[00:06:40]He'll want to go. He wants to to go and have a fresh start. Not been happy at United obviously never really got going here at all and it's not worked out.

[00:06:49]wants to move, United will likely shift him and that should free up a little bit more funds. But United are looking then seriously at the potential of bringing in three midfielders in that case and the budget will likely stretch to that.

[00:07:01]If they can get, you know, their serious target in the 70 80 range and then their second target in the 40 to 50 range, then there is the room and capacity to do three midfielders this summer, which is the ideal. two is like the minimum, but three is seriously potential with the uh the moving of Manuel Lugarte very likely to happen this summer out of the club. So, there's a lot of good planning here, but what I do want to say about this midfield thing right now is in terms of who it's going to be, it's probably the most up in the air it's been. And that can sound like bad planning, but I think it's kind of the opposite. It's it's good planning in the sense that United are prepared, you know, rather than in years past where they say they have one or two targets, they're going to go for those guys and they're just going to keep driving the price up up up until they get them or walk away and get nobody. They have so many targets that it's not that there aren't favorites right now. Uh I think Balaba has a very high chance of happening right now. I believe that Chumen's chances may be growing given the situation as well. Um but should they not? Should Brighton demand the fee in the range of 70 to 80 million for Carlos Balaba, then United are very likely going to simply move on. And they have a lot of other targets. And so I don't think we'll see them getting stuck in that way because they'd be very happy with really two to three of any of the types of targets that they've had. And that's really why they've they've built a list in the way that they have of targets where they say, "Well, that's fine. If we can't get one of those, we're not going to get stuck in spending all our budget on one player. we've got all these targets where we could just knock down two or three of them as needed and get it done. And uh and they are all serious options, the names that have been mentioned. And I wouldn't be surprised if United got literally any two or three of those uh main names. We know that uh we've talked about Anderson, the situation with Tanali is that his price is also looking to be valued at too high in that 100 million plus range, which is well outside what they're willing to pay. Adam Wharton may be more in range in terms of what they feel is he's worth as a player but in terms of the fit next to Kabenu who is with his new contract secured viewed as a key part of the midfield moving forward understandably so um they want a player that matches profile-wise to him and solves some of the problems that we have presently and the view is that maybe Adam Wharton doesn't do that so if you could get good deals on other players you might come back to him as a really good option in the team but it'd be difficult to play you know Wharton Mayu Baruno next year and they would like their marquee or big signing to be somebody that can slot into that midfield directly as a replacement for Casemiro. Not in that they're the same player as Casemiro, but meaning come into that midfield place with Mayu and Bruno as the uh the midfield moving forward or at least your your first choice midfield moving forward. So that's why Wharton tends to be kind of played down a bit. He's also apparently being looked at by Liverpool. So the midfield huge focus. It's starting to grow. the concept that we can get three the bulk of our budget that could be in the range of 250 million will likely go to uh the midfield and um looking to leave I think we could very much see three signings in the range of 150 to 160 million midfield work is being done on that I can tell you that for sure um that they have had multiple recent discussions and and talks with Carlos Bleba's people that there's been a few checks continued checks on uh on um on Chua many and perhaps even some encouragement from their side. Now, we'll see how the latest news changes, pushes, drives, or affects any of that um because it is definitely chaos at Madrid. Um and then otherwise, I I can tell you that Ederson is a really real target. His name I've brought up for a couple of years now and it kind of comes up and then we don't do it. Comes up, we don't do it. And I've I've wondered many times why not. Um, but I can tell you with quite some certainty that Ederson was highly admired by Jason Wilcox in the last summer. Um, and uh, a player they strongly considered bringing in at a at a certain point. Um, but decided not moving in the midfield in that direction. Uh, this summer available at the lowest price. I think the main thing is he's not viewed as the first choice type of signing. So, we can get one of our major signings in Ederson could certainly come in as a potential backup eight. And if we're going for three, I think the idea is we want two more defensive minded midfielders to replace Casemiro Garte and one more boxtobox slash attacking midfielder in that sense too. So he is a real option. It's not agent noise. Uh there might be agent noise in the sense of you know playing up the talks to be further than there are. That always happens but it's not agent noise in terms of the reality of his uh of his interest of the interest from United. Um, but again, they also want to focus on Premier League players and make sure they have a solid core.

[00:11:54]But when we're talking about potential A3, it brings names like that back strongly into the conversation. Atletico Madrid are looking at both Jiao Gomez and Ederson. One comes off the list. The other is potentially somebody we could look to sign as that second or third signing depending on on who we bring in.

[00:12:11]In terms of Michael Carrick continues to insist that no decision has been made.

[00:12:14]the club continued to insist that a decision will not be made and anything will be taken until the end of the season. Now, it's a very it's an interesting thing to me, the the whole thing with with Michael Carrick because obviously um you know, we do know that Carrick is very likely, you know, the favorite at this point in time. There's been plenty of pieces discussing kind of the issue, which is that sure, if they could go get Enrique or Ancelotti, they would have, but they can't right now. and that, you know, it's potentially not the right timing for some others. And um I think that what's happening here to some degree is some might say, well, it being delayed or taking longer, maybe that means Carrick's not getting the job. I don't think that's the case. What I think is going on is this. And I think that um you know, this is a semi-informed opinion. I do have some insight into how things are viewed within certain circles of the football world. I can't say everybody views it this way, but certainly there are uh varied opinions out there. United are aware of the perception and I'm not talking about fan perception. Fan perception is not something that is supposed to guide them and I and I still believe to a degree that it doesn't though I have my concerns at time that it does. Um but it's not about fan perception but football perception is important. Uh, one of the biggest things that Inos have going for them or the new leadership have going for them coming in is that, um, they're not just, you know, they're not just the the new, you know, they're not the same as the as the Glazers, you know what I mean? They're not, um, they're not the same as the Glazers. They are a different people.

[00:13:51]They are a different group. They are a different uh, everything. And they're going to operate differently, right? Um, they could be forgiven for the initial mistake that was obviously everybody knew in football during the first season about Tenhog and they can be forgiven as well for getting it wrong in choosing a manager in in the football space. But the sales pitch that they have to make to players and agents to convince them this summer is that they do have a solid long-term plan that will bring United back to competition for big titles because United are not offering the biggest wages anymore. So we're not selling and winning on that basis that we're going to give you the most money.

[00:14:32]That's how we got buy it in years past.

[00:14:35]So it is important for United to maintain a reputation moving forward under new leadership that they are they have a plan that they're sticking to that plan that they're following through with it and the pieces can be changed manager cannot work out another one could come in that doesn't work out but as long as you're continuing to progress on this long-term plan and not operating by the seat of your pants and not flying emotionally back and forth to different decisions and not changing direction constantly the things that United have seen in the The reason we don't win every competition for players anymore is simply because that trust isn't there yet. United, I think, are quiteware aware of this and wary of the perception that might be out there in football should they rush into the appointment of Michael Carrick. doesn't mean he won't get the job, but I think they do want to make sure that it's really well laid out, that they have looked into other candidates, that they have held talks, that they have had interviews, that they've had discussions, and if they then go with Michael Carrick, that it is viewed to see as the best alignment towards the long-term plan. Now, you can believe that or not, but United certainly, I think, want to make sure it is known out there that they've done their due diligence on this sense and not just made that over emotional immediate decision. Uh, I still believe it'll end up being Carrick and I still believe based on what's available out there that it's almost inevitable they come to that conclusion that it is Carrick. Um but I think there will be a hope that it it represents uh in the football space a perception that they are operating with some sort of clarity and and plan and while yes they might be operating in a difficult time where it's hard to get maybe the perfect manager and that's everybody's aware of that that the appointment of Michael Carrick is not just short-term or emotion or whatever but does fit the long-term plan and it's not just resultsbased but does fit the long-term plan of the club as well. I think they'll want to make sure that at least they improve upon that perception and aren't seen as the Glazers because they find themselves in a difficult position.

[00:16:38]If you make continued steps and plans on towards a long-term plan, you can continue to sell that long-term plan to people. And it's not always going to work out. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Every player's aware that sometimes a coach doesn't work out. But if it appears that you're making emotional seat of your pants short-termbbased decisions and then those decisions don't work, you're going to have a hard time selling that in the future. So, I think United are aware of that because there are certainly I can tell you for sure there is there are people outside there in football that are looking at the situation and going we're not sure if United are sticking to some sort of plan or if they are, you know, just winging it again. And uh and I think United are aware of that too.

[00:17:29]And and that can affect things like recruitment. It's not like it's going to stop everybody from signing or it may not even stop the bulk of players from signing, but you never know how it can affect things and and that type of perception is important. So, I think that's why they want to take their time is to uh improve the perception of things in football, not fans, but football. Uh and then there's sponsors.

[00:17:49]Uh was announced the other day that United replacing Tzos with a betting sponsor, Betweight, whatever it was that Lori Whitwell put out. Um, sponsorships, as I mentioned, I think six or seven months ago, maybe it was in like October, United have lined up, I believe, as many as three different kind of sponsors. They've had discussion with, but they're continuing to kind of hold off on a few of them until um they secured Champions League as they think the sponsorships will be more valuable them and they can get better commercial deals at this point in time.

[00:18:22]So, I do expect there's more sponsors to come. Uh, United do have a few sponsorship slots available. Um, that revenue will be important and uh will be something that could definitely as well add to the budget this year uh with getting Champions League in addition to what they have shoring up the cash flow, things like that. So, we'll see. Okay, that's what I have for this video. I'll be live a bit later to discuss more, but just wanted to kind of briefly summarize things.
