Kosovo Independence: A Divided Future?

[00:00:00]To understand why Kosovo matters so deeply to Serbs, you have to go back to the 12th and 13th centuries when Serbia was not a fragmented country struggling for survival, but a rising power at the center of Southeastern European politics. Under Stefan Nemanja, who founded the Nemanjić dynasty around 1166, Serbia began consolidating territory and establishing itself as a serious Orthodox Christian kingdom. His descendants expanded Serbian power steadily over the following generations [music] and the kingdom reached its absolute peak under Stefan Dušan, who ruled from 1331 [music] to 1355 and declared himself emperor of the Serbs and Greeks. At the height of his reign, the Serbian [music] empire stretched from the Danube in the north all the way down through modern Albania and Macedonia into northern Greece. It was one of the most powerful Christian states in all of Southeastern Europe.
