America’s Clocks Were Complete Chaos

[00:00:00]Before 1883, every town in America set its own clock based on the sun directly overhead. There were over 300 different local times across the country. In 1853, two trains collided in Rhode Island because the engineers watches disagreed by just a [music] few minutes. 14 people died. That deadly crash pushed the railroads to fix the time problem themselves. On November 18th, 1883, the railroads sent one telegraph signal from Philadelphia. And just like that, every railroad clock across the country [music] was reset to the four new time zones. Some cities had to turn their clocks backward to sync up, which meant in those cities, the clock hit 12:00 once, then got turned [music] back, and hit 12:00 again later that same day.
