M7.3 Struck Mexico — California, Should You Worry?

[00:00:00]So this is the earthquake that came in this morning at 8:30 8:48 in the morning.

[00:00:12]It was magnitude 7.3 in Mexico southern part of the Mexico.

[00:00:21]Actually I'm surprised the buildings are resilient compared to what we have seen in Venezuela and other places.

[00:00:31]So crazy to see people are holding the buildings.

[00:00:43]You can hear the metal.

[00:00:48]Yeah. Lot of people came running outside their the buildings are shaking.

[00:00:56]I haven't seen the buildings fall like the way it happened out there in Venezuela and other places, but they did issue a tsunami warning hundreds of miles of the coast.

[00:01:14]It was 7.3. Initially, it was 7.4 and they adjusted it to 7.3.

[00:01:21]So, everyone is asking is California next? That's what people are talking about. Now look at this building that is like shaking.

[00:01:32]It is anything seven and above is a major again. This one these are very resilient wellb built looks like.

[00:01:53]So we need to look at all the data.

[00:01:55]Compare the California earthquake to the Mexico earthquake that we are dealing with. This is one of the rooftop pools.

[00:02:02]I guess you can see how much the building uh is getting rocked by this earthquake. Just the power is immense.

[00:02:25]It's not like scary from compared to like what we are talking about in California. We need to actually see the data and see whether any relation is there between Mexico and California just to give you a fair understanding of where we are. These are two different earthquakes. That's what at least I can give you the initial understanding of where this is.

[00:02:52]So we know California is like very much like ready to go locked and loaded and those ponds are very uh very much loaded on both sides in couple of places that we have seen in the previous videos before. So this is the 7.3 earthquake that came in today morning July 17th. It's 18 km deep.

[00:03:22]That's way too many of them over there.

[00:03:25]Yeah, several of them. There are two four earthquakes and several fives.

[00:03:33]There is one six as well. The depth is not very much. They are some of them couple of them are like 35 km and all.

[00:03:42]This one is at 18 km deep.

[00:03:46]So they are not that shallow or they are not that deep. So they are somewhere over there.

[00:03:51]I'll show you the data points and what's going on here. Yeah. So this is at 7.3.

[00:03:57]This is what I was able to get the data so far.

[00:04:02]July 17th today in the morning.

[00:04:06]So 58 kilometers of the coastline depth is 18 kilometers and there are 265 people that felt but I would assume probably thousands more.

[00:04:21]They are only the ones who are reporting because you saw like how many people are there in those videos. Yeah, it's actually yellow right now.

[00:04:32]the one that came in Venezuela. The pager alert was read some casualities. That's what we are hearing. It's off the coast. I mean you can see very clearly it's a subduction zone. We'll go into those details as well. So it is loaded for Railian's website. So this is basically the shake intensity map of the coast there and several earthquakes around reported in that area. Yeah, the intensity is quite large. I mean you can clearly see.

[00:05:10]So I mean the biggest question that we will get is uh is it going to have any impact on the California false lines?

[00:05:18]They're close by, but not not the same.

[00:05:21]False lines, not the same. So, this is the one that explains pretty much why this is happening and why it was going on for millions of years. So, what you are seeing on the ocean here is the south Mexico or southern Mexico and the ocean belt and the name of the plate that goes by here is called Kokos plate.

[00:05:46]And this Kokos plate gets under the North American plate and it is diving underneath the North American plate.

[00:05:55]That's what is going on. And it's been going on for millions of years. This grinding northeast as it is pushing up almost like 76 mm a year. That's the motion and the that's the stress that it is building every year.

[00:06:16]And whenever it lets go and whenever these overriding plates are going to like push it upwards that reverse fault rupture is the one that is going to create that mega thrust interface and you are seeing these earthquakes and actually in this area these earthquakes are fairly common and they are all going to come at this level most of the line and that's exactly what happened this morning as well. And also if you see the slip area here, it is not like one point area. This is like almost like 60 by 30 km area. So if you noticed how USGS presents the earthquake, how the rocks moved essentially by using this beach ball method. So this is not the fault by itself. This is how the focal mechanism of how these faults moved. The blue part on the top is going to show that was pushing in. That is the compression. That's what is going on on the blue side. Whereas the white is showing pulling apart kind of a tension.

[00:07:37]So one is showing the compression the other one is showing the tension the tension is coming from you can think of the coco plate and the compression is happening on the top which is on the North American plate side and that's when you see these numbers here when you are seeing the 75 and 98 last two numbers there 75 and 19. So that shows that this is a subduction mega thrust causing this earthquake which is a very fairly common earthquake that we are noticing right now.

[00:08:20]So the math that we have for this area and the map that it is showing they both agree. So based on that we can look at this as a routine event rather than a major event which is going to maybe pass that information into the California plates. I'm not telling you that California is fine by no means because we know at the Dejon Pass the faults San Andreas fault and the Garlock fault we just saw an earthquake last week around 4.1 I believe that's the earthquake that came in so there there is some noise that's happening near the California fault so we need to keep an eye But I believe the takeaway at least in my head was looking at this data.

[00:09:23]I don't want to jump to conclusions that Mexico fault means now California is next just by the way they look around.

[00:09:33]They may not translate exactly the way we might think. So we need to see we need to get more data points. So today's earthquake is a reminder because remember there was an earthquake 88 minutes ago before this 7.3 came in around 4.5 and after that the big one came in. So whenever you see these small earthquakes even though like last week a 4.1 came in you can't just sit back and think of like maybe the major one is not coming today it proved 88 minutes later from 4.5 it jumped to a 7.1.
