In film criticism, effective storytelling requires both strong pacing throughout the narrative and meaningful character arcs that show transformation; The Mandalorian and Grogu is praised for its fun, creative elements and practical effects but criticized for having a slow second half and lacking character development, where neither Mando nor Grogu undergo any significant emotional change from beginning to end.

Preston Jacobs Upsets Random Losers in This Video's Comment Section With His Star Wars ReviewAdded:
Um, thoughts on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?
Beautiful, beautiful movie, beautifully filmed.
Um, I I think it's a I think it's a great, great movie. I I love it. Yeah.
>> Would you say it's a fun film?
>> I would say it's fun. I would say it's fun.
>> Really?
>> Is it the Is it the Mandalorian [ __ ] Is it the >> Traitors. Traitors. So, I >> So, I watched I I took my boy to see to see Grogu. Mandalorian and Grogu today. And then >> I got something to tell you about this.
Look on Discord. Sorry for interrupting.
>> Yeah. Okay. But, then I I came home and I and I and I watched the um >> the Red Letter Media >> [laughter] >> Red Letter Media thing.
And um there's a there's a little second in there for a couple seconds in there where they trash Star Wars Explained.
And it's really unfair to Star Wars Explained. Cuz Star Wars Explained is actually in the sentence criticizing the movie.
And they they put him in with this montage of other like suck-ups.
Um, where where he's just like, "Oh god."
So, I think he's like he's like, "It's a safe but fun movie." Which is completely, utterly accurate, okay?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And he's he's criticizing it by saying it's safe.
You know? And but they still throw him in with this montage of of people that are like, "Oh, it's a fun movie." I mean, it is a fun movie. Like, it's no doubt that it's a fun movie. And there's nothing wrong with calling a movie fun.
So, it's a little bit like like it's one of the common things like, you know?
Mandalorian and Grogu I mean, it's not that I disagree with the any of the criticisms that that they that they make of the movie.
Um, but it's like the severity of of their criticism. I don't I don't recommend if you're going to see it watching their They spoil the whole movie. So, you I I I would say like watch the movie first.
>> spoil? What's there to [laughter] spoil?
>> There's no I mean there's there's some I'm saying there's a there's a few really fun clever scenes in the movie that I was really happy I had not that were not spoiled. Cuz I was watching and then I was like, "Oh, that's really fun."
You know, that's really cool.
>> is funny here is that you are everybody loves throwing like this label at you that you're a very grumpy old guy now.
But you're telling me that Red Letter Media, they're the grumps.
>> Dude, this is this is this is a movie for this is a movie for children.
>> For babies?
>> For babies. I mean, they do they do do they do criticize correctly that they're like, "Isn't this a little violent for a kids movie?" Yes, but Star Wars has always been too violent for a kids movie. But like, yes.
Um It starts off really well.
>> son like it? Did your son like it?
>> He liked it fine, but but uh so the the with without any spoilers or I I will say that the um there's I would say there's two major flaws to the movie, okay? It's a fine movie. It's fine. It's fun. It's fun.
But I'd say there's two major flaws if I'm going to criticize this movie. I would say the first ha It's got a pacing problem where the first half is really exciting and fun and then it slows the [ __ ] down for the second half.
And so I was like yawning near the end and my son was like "Daddy, is this movie almost over yet?"
And I'm like, "I think 10 more minutes."
And it's like, "No, it keeps going." And I'm like, "How long is this [ __ ] movie?" Like it should have been an hour and a half and it's 2 hours, right? And you're just like and you know, he's like, "Is this movie going to be over yet?" I think only 5 more minutes. Nope, like it just keeps going, right?
So that's I would say that like it's got a pacing >> if a this little kid is like, "I'm bored."
>> Yeah.
>> And I couldn't blame him cuz I'm I was yawning.
Um so, I will say pacing problems.
Because and I I will say that that the first half like if the first half is boring and the second half is strong, you remember the second half being strong, but if the first half is strong and the second half is boring, and that's a problem.
>> That's the taste that you leave on.
>> Yeah.
My the other criticisms I would have is not a single character goes through an emotional arc.
>> That's what I heard, that there's no arc in the for anybody in the entire The closest is one character, right? And it's like barely anything.
>> I I wouldn't I would not be that charitable. I would not be charitable to any >> [laughter] >> What I What I find funny about what you're telling me is that the movie doesn't matter. It In the grand scheme of things, doesn't matter.
>> it doesn't matter.
At least you got something from Solo or Rogue One. This is what I'm kind of afraid of in the Dave Filoni era of Star Wars because people love to [ __ ] about Kathleen Kennedy and a lot of the grifters, they made their money. Some guys bought houses bitching about this woman for 10 years, but now I think this is the era we're going to enter, the safe era.
Where Kathleen Kennedy would just like green-light like random [ __ ] Boom boom boom. Some would suck, some would be amazing. This [ __ ] I don't think we're going to go anywhere.
>> even He's not even There There's characters that I assumed would die, and they didn't. Like, it's that safe that like you're like, "Oh, you didn't even kill Oh my god." Like you'd think >> about like Darth >> You'd think after a boss battle that >> Nope.
>> I want to use that character later.
>> You watched Maul fight?
>> No, but I've heard you guys talk about it. I don't know. I saw the the clip of the fight and stuff. like Like, I'm just like, we're still doing with this guy like we're still like cuz cuz cuz Carmine I'm the kid that grew up with Clone Wars and then I knew about Rebels and stuff and then like I heard about [clears throat] this and and then I saw Solo like let this character just die.
>> [laughter] >> Nah, we're never going to we're never going to cut it. We're never going to die. We're never going to die.
The amount of time that the Star Wars universe has given to Darth Maul is 20 times the time given to Lando Calrissian.
>> Yes, it's it's more time given to to Luke Skywalker. It's like it's like >> [laughter] >> who the [ __ ] is this who the [ __ ] is this character that like had no lines in the movie that he was introduced in?
>> [laughter] >> So in in in Filoni's defense, he is a huge George Lucas fanboy and had George Lucas like sold to Disney episodes 7, 8, and 9 would have been Darth Maul as the main villain with his Twi'lek dark side apprentice.
Yeah, Darth you know yeah.
>> Carmine, do you know the story behind that?
>> Yeah, he was going to go microscopic with like midi-chlorians and Leia was going to be revealed to be the real chosen one or something.
>> and all that.
>> I was talking about something else. I was talking about something else Carmine where the the impetus for like the the Darth Talon Maul connection thing. He apparently This might be an apocryphal story, but he apparently walked into a room and saw two action figures of Darth Talon like the Twi'lek dancy what do you what do you what person call it dancing girl?
>> girls the dancing girl species.
>> girl like that's just that's all they are just dancing girl.
>> And he saw her and he he saw Darth Maul.
He's like they should be friends and and like the guys in the room were like George like they exist in completely different timelines. Like this is one is like post Return of the Jedi then like you killed Darth Maul off. Darth Maul's dead. And he's like, "Just make it work.
Just make it work."
>> So So, I know what he's talking about.
>> like, "Yeah, am I just am I warping the story?" It was like for a video >> No, no, no. You're right. You're right.
135 years after episode four, the Sith come back strong as [ __ ] and there's this woman, sexy Twi'lek, Darth Talon, and she [ __ ] around and has sex with Luke Skywalker's descendant. Um that's That's it. And George saw I guess that's what George Lucas saw. He saw Darth Talon and >> He said they should be friends. They should be friends. That's so Oh god.
>> See, at least at least though, at least with Maul, you can, you know, dancing girl has an arc.
You know? Like I can at least say like, "Look, the Darth the Darth Maul animated series They're animated It's whatever, but at least there is an arc." I So, I will say the big criticism of the movie, like there is nothing like There were There were moments where I was like, "Oh, this is where they're going to go with this character." And no, they don't.
Like they don't. There's no change for Mando, no change for Grogu. Zero.
Um it's it's It's it's them having a lot of fun. Don't get me wrong. Like they're having a lot of adventures. There's some There's a lot of really creative monsters in the movie.
>> They bring back a man in man, right?
They bring back the little little salamander guy from Java's palace.
>> Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they do.
>> I like that stuff. That's kind of fun.
>> No, there's a lot of There's a lot of great And I will say, one of the things I was pleasantly surprised is there is a lot of practical effects and a lot of stop motion.
>> I've heard about the stop motion. That's amazing.
>> Yeah. Lots of And look, and there's a there's a lot of laughs.
I mean, little puppets going like all over the like there's a lot of puppets going and I I love it. I love puppets like like this crap.
Okay.
I I laughed at I I laughed out loud at least five times in the movie. But, like I said, the two major criticisms, pacing, second part is not as good as the first, and there is not a single [ __ ] um there's not an arc. Like there like the basic storytelling premise of the movie begins and by the end something has changed. The protagonist has changed. Nope.
Nope. Like exactly [ __ ] the same.
>> So, what you're telling me is this entire movie could have been an email.
Got it. Could have been an email.
>> No, I mean >> Come on.
>> Even even like the Epic of Gilgamesh has a character arc. Like think about that.
Like think [laughter] about Yeah. That's crazy.
>> By the way, by the way, before you move on, I got to say, man, you >> as a as a dad >> I forgot by the way to be before I forget on on Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The only thing the only flaw to the movie, they never explain why um uh What's his name? Sparkle Eyes? What's his s- the Sweet Eyes?
>> He What's that?
>> Angel Eyes.
>> Angel Eyes. They never explain why how Angel Eyes became embedded in the Confederate Army.
Like >> [laughter] >> He's just out of out of [ __ ] nowhere.
>> He's embedded in the and you're just like, "Did I miss something?" Like I watched the movie and I was just like, "Did I [ __ ] miss something?"
Why is Angel Eyes in the Confederate Army?
Never [ __ ] explained. Never. Like it's just like it's it's this funny goof that they he's like, "Oh, it's the They're with us." And then they're like, "Hello. Hello." And then it turn Oh, I'm sorry. He he's with the Union. They're like, "We're Confederates." And then it turns out they have dust on them.
>> It's never explained why Angel Angel Eyes is in that army. Never.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> One big flaw in the movie, but it's a brilliant movie. Anyway, I'm Carmind, I interrupted you. I'm sorry.
>> No, I I I called Preston and I'm like, "Hey, um you know, we got a topic for the stream." He said, "Blah, blah, blah."
And the entire time Preston's like he just came out of the movie with his kid.
I got to say, man, like no offense, but Caucasian-American parents are [ __ ] awesome compared to like Latin parents cuz the entire time like Preston's kid wanted something to drink. So, Preston's like, "Okay, Sky, what do you want? They have Coca-Cola, Sprite. They don't have the Grogu Mando uh Sugar Blast, but we can walk around and find something for you, buddy." He's so nice and [ __ ] My mom would be like, "Yeah, there's Coke and Sprite and that's all they got. If you want to walk around and find something, look, just don't bother me. I'm doing you a favor.
I'm doing you a favor. Go outside and [clears throat] open your mouth and let the rain like, you know, quench your thirst. It'll save me a lot of money."
>> You're You're reading it You're reading it the wrong way, man. You're reading it as like me >> you, but go ahead.
>> No, but you're reading it the wrong way.
It's more that I went and I was like, "I want to have this special moment with my son where I take him to his first movie and it's going to be this Star Wars movie and he's going to have a [ __ ] great time and like I want him to be really happy for this really special moment between us, you know? Like that's what was on my mind."
>> There's something special There's something special about taking your your son to a Star Wars movie. Like my dad, me and him went to Force Awakens and and it was this really special moment I treasure to this day. We had a guy dressed up like a stormtrooper and stuff. We took a picture with him. He He He let me He let me sleep in from school cuz it was on a school night. Like it's just quite beautiful little moments between father and son right there.
>> Yeah, you know, you know, it's like you know, you got to uh >> Oh, oh, look at that. Look at Look how happy you are. That's awesome.
>> Aw.
>> Wait, you're telling me that the first time you'll get him any drink, but the next time [ __ ] that, he's getting either Coke or Sprite and that's it.
>> All right.
>> Aw.
>> Oh, does it >> That was All right, Preston, That's awesome.
He's so happy.
He's got a little Grogu shirt on. That's awesome. Well, no, it's a Pokémon shirt.
Oh, okay. Okay. But he got So, he got out, right? And he got out and they uh out of out of the Caribbean cinema and across the food court is Burger King.
And Burger King has this promotional um uh tie-in, right?
And um it it's like Let me see if Let me see if I can [ __ ] bring it up. Not that This is like Burger King should be like should be paying me for for the uh for the tie-in. Oh, god.
>> Grogu is basically a Pokémon. You're right, Max. Is Is he Is he is a Pokémon, essentially.
>> [laughter] [clears throat] >> They have the special drink. Is it everywhere? [snorts] Maybe it's by country or something.
Cuz it was called like the Grogu blast.
Yeah, like the drink The drink is The drink is definitely different by country. Holy [ __ ] But you go over, you know, he sees this drink and like So, in Taiwan, my son became really addicted to Taiwanese um Taiwanese like fruity drinks with like gelatinous bubbles in them and stuff, which is you know, uh uniquely It's It's It's 500% Taiwanese, you know? And so, anytime he sees like he he calls it bubble tea even even though it's not necessarily wouldn't give him tea cuz tea has caffeine in it, but like it you know, he's he's he's done for these fruity drinks with the gelatinous stuff in it. And so, it it literally like it was called like a like a Grogu blast or something. And and he wanted to go to Burger King just so he could get the Grogu blast uh drink, which was this like green thing with like bubbles in it, like little gelatinous bubbles in it.
Of course, I go over there and I'm like, "Yeah, um yeah, I'd like, you know, your your your cheeseburger meal and and and the Grogu drink." And she's just like, "Yeah, no. No. No to name offs. No.
Like, [laughter] sorry."
>> I I think I think I just found it. Uh it's the Grogu juice from the St. Michael Cinema.
>> I like how I'm like, "Press, I'm trying to give you a compliment." You're like, "Hey, this one time. This one time I'm going out of my way. Next time, though, no."
>> [laughter]
