When an air conditioner is not cooling properly despite the fan working, the technician diagnoses the issue by checking refrigerant levels using gauges and measuring superheat and subcooling values; low refrigerant causes the system to run inefficiently and requires proper recharging with the correct refrigerant type (such as R-410A) to restore cooling performance.

AC Struggling to Cool? Here's the ProblemAdded:
Morning, guys. May 20th, 2026.
You know, I got a call from a guy. Um, you got an AC that's not cooling up on the second floor.
And uh it says the fan's working inside, but it's not really cooling like it should out. No. Uh cooler doesn't seem to be coming out as good as it should. So says the fan's working. He did change the filter cuz he was up in the attic and everything seems to be running up there, but don't seem to be cooling. So we'll probably check the unit out. Run it.
Check the unit outside.
see what's going on with the pressures.
Anyway, we'll go over there.
Mother-in-law is supposed to meet me over there to let me in and see if we can figure out. He did shut the thermostat off. So, it's flipping 90° today. It's hot.
See what's happening with it. You know, these systems, none of these, a lot of the times these systems aren't perfect.
You know where you get them the best you can and go to the next flipping job.
Try to get [ __ ] perfect. A lot of times you can't. The air flow is not there and sometime things are just flipping screwed up with these systems.
I'm no miracle worker. I can't walk on water here.
I do the best I can. That's it. I'm not too worried about it.
You'll learn that really quick when you're out there working in the field. I don't have to get too worked up over [ __ ] It's a nest.
Yeah, I heard the fan come on. I'll check it outside.
>> Outside or >> I'm going to I got to check it outside.
Some heat out of it. I got to put my gauges on it.
Don't seem bad. This is a little tiny flipping unit for the size of this house. It's an R22.
Is it 410? Yeah.
Checking my camera. I think I was here a couple of years ago. Oh, if I remember right, something screwed up with this thing.
It's 410.
Is it? Yeah, 410A.
Let's put the gauges on it. See what it's doing.
It's probably a little low on gas.
Let me put my gauges on it and see what it's doing.
She's 410, mama.
What we got here? Am I going to need my flex supplies? I think the suction.
I remember right something was screwed up with this thing pressures and something.
It's almost a little walky.
I was a little wonky with this thing.
I'm on the right.
I'm thinking it's a little low on gas.
That's what I'm thinking.
She's a little low.
Heat.
Heat.
Yeah. 94. See it? See the super heat at 46.
It's low.
Heat. Heat.
Yeah, little low there. See at 92 on the suction and then the sub coolant flipping low.
We got to put some gas in it. Let me get some 410.
All right, I got some 410A. We'll put some 410 in it. It's got to be above Just let me know the bill is whatever.
>> All right. You want to see what's going on here?
>> See this at 4 at 93? Yeah.
>> Should be like maybe 110 or something, you know?
>> And then hang on. See the super heat at 40 50 to 50 should be like maybe 20.
>> Okay.
>> And the sub cooling at 6 that should be like 12. So it's low on gas.
>> And that should be auary. That that would make it not cool.
>> That's a leak anywhere, I'm assuming.
>> Flipping leak could be anywhere.
>> True. True.
>> I'm starting a leak myself.
>> They got diapers for you, though. I don't got diapers for the machine.
>> I appreciate it. Thank you.
>> All right.
It's not leak myself.
Some gas going in the suction. bleed out of here.
Got to put it in as a liquid.
It's going to leak myself.
I'm going to give it some gas. I don't know what the [ __ ] up with this thing, but it won't spin on me.
There we go. There we go. That's better.
All right. You can see a 90. You can see the 94 there. Right. We're going to give it some gas.
Going to give it some Yeah. Just giving it a little freon. It's coming up here.
This is We're going to bring that up to maybe 110 or something. This this subc coolant should start coming up as I put gas in it.
You don't want to put in too much and flash it. I mean, can regulate it right here with this valve. You don't want to put in too much cuz it's dumping liquid in there.
Going to bring that super heat that um that sub that super heat wants to come down.
Now, what's happening is I'm dumping liquid in here into the suction line.
So, you got to regulate it so it flashes in there. You don't want to just dump pure liquid and that turns white. That slug the compressor. Got to go slow.
Like, if I remember right, the the sub cooling on this thing was a little clear.
Something was weird about it.
I can definitely feel it getting warmer off the top here.
I'm getting a reading on my clamp now.
My clamp wasn't reading right.
I remember something was screwed up with this unit last time. I think the sub coolant. See how it's off?
Might have to clean the unit.
I have to give it a good hose.
Yeah. See our super heat better.
But I need to wash this unit. Close it down.
Remember where we were before? That's good. Right there. I'm going to leave the charge right there. I just got to hit this outside unit with the holes.
The back of the unit's really dirty.
Give it a good hosing.
Give it a good one.
I know this unit is too small for this house. This is a colonial. This flipping colonial and it's only got a little 2 and 1/2 toner in here.
It's definitely undized.
do the best I can with what I got to work with. That's it. That's the best I'm going to do.
Put a little gas in it. It will pull down.
Got this somewhere.
The back was really dirty.
I think that's what I did last time I was here. I cleaned it and here a couple of years ago to stop a Goodman. Last time I took it to the truck, it was 157 and I just weighed it again and it's 137. It's 2 lbs.
That's how I do it. So, next time I use the tank and bring it back to the truck, I'll weigh it and I'll know how much I used.
put it back in the rack and next time I use it, I'll weigh it when I bring it back and a couple of 22s there. I got three we recovery tanks and then I got uh 32.
This is a just a regular tank. And I got another a spa for 454B when I start using that trash. I'm going to set it to 7072.
It is cooling down. I could feel it.
It'll take some while to pull down.
Supposedly here. He put new filters.
He's running the cheap filters like I told him to.
Good.
