The Chosen Season 2 ReviewAñadido:
Okay, so welcome to my review of The Chosen season 2. If you missed my thoughts on The Chosen season 1, I will leave a link to that video down below. I actually recommend you watch that one before you watch this one. So, there'll be a link to it at the end of this video as well as a link to to the video um down in the description. So, check that out before you Actually, I recommend you watch that first. So, The Chosen season 2 At this point in the history of The Chosen, their budget went up because season 1 was way way more prob- probably more successful than they had even bargained for. So, the budget went up for season 2 and everything in season 2 looks better. You know, in season 1, they did the best they could with what they had and there weren't that many extras and in a lot of ways, it felt like a very small story. But with season 2, they're able to hire more extras, go to better locations, really expand out the story. Now, in case you missed my season 1 review, well, like I said, I hope you went to go check it out first.
The Chosen is a semi-biographical series about the life of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, and his apostles.
The series really puts focus on the apostles and what Jesus has done for them in their lives. Now, as I said in my season 1 review, and this continues into season 2. There are parts of the series that are without question taken right from the pages of the Gospels, in some ways almost word for word. The Sermon on the Mount is the big sort of build-up here and there's episodes, and I'll get more into it later, where Jesus is basically working with Matthew and trying to brainstorm and come up with how the sermon's going to go. Now, that in and of itself, some people have said might be blasphemous if he is the son of God, he should just know what to say.
But, I don't think that's necessarily the case and that's where things get tricky when it comes to understand the Trinity. Jesus Christ was definitely the son, the second in the Trinity under the Father, and he even says the Father speaks through him. Like, when he speaks, the Father, he's speaking what the Father wants him to say, but he's also a man. And even though he might know what he has to say, right? In his head, Jesus might know exactly what God the Father or him himself, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, want to say to the followers, it doesn't necessarily mean that he knows how to say it. So, to me, I don't find that to be blasphemous at all. But, like I mentioned in my season 1 review, if you're looking for this to be a one-in-one adaptation of the Gospels, it's not. They do fill in the blanks, they do add extra dialogue, they do have extra stuff with the apostles. I saw an interview with Jonathan Roumie who said that they consult with several different Christian scholars to make sure that the characterizations are at least close to what people perceive them to be. And as I said in my season 1 review, it's not a replacement for the Gospels, but if it gets people to open up their Bibles and read what was actually in there, that's got to be a positive, especially for the Christian worldview. But, like I said, you do not have to be a Christian to enjoy the show because the characters and the story in and of itself is just wonderful. Like, the show really does give these really nice, wonderful vibes and it does really paint Jesus as being just, you know, he laughs, he plays, he's a guy you want to be around. He's not super serious except when he has to be.
Uh and there's just so many great moments in season 2. Now, there are some things about season 2 that I do question that I don't remember at all being in the Bible, but it doesn't necessarily mean that something like it didn't happen. For example, there's an episode where Mary Magdalene goes off and commits a sin and then feels very guilty about it and she basically leaves the group temporarily and then comes back and Jesus, of course, forgives her because he can do that. He can forgive sins. Now, I don't recall anything in the Gospel about this happening. In fact, there's not really a lot of Mary Magdalene there. We know that she was with Jesus a lot, but this story really wasn't in there. Now, I think the reason as to why they wrote it in is for two reasons. I think number one, they wanted to give Mary Magdalene like a little character arc, something to kind of build up her character. And number two, they wanted to show the audience about how merciful Jesus is and how he was perfectly understanding of her mistakes, he forgave her, she was radically emotional, but he forgave her and that was a beautiful scene. Now, there's something else that I call into question, but at the same time was also a beautiful scene. The very first scene in season 2, season 2 episode 1, the ninth episode, it begins after the series is already over, years later after the death of Jesus, where John is interviewing people as he begins to write the Gospel of John. Now, I really really liked this part because, like, you know, Mother Mary, the things that she says about Jesus, he loved all of you and and just it was such a a heartwarming and it's going to be very heartbreaking to see this guy get crucified in the sixth season. But, um the the way that was sort of that back and forth played out, I thought was was a great peek into the future. But, there's a part that was kind of, you know, let me scratching my head. Matthew says, you know, I think I'll put that in my Gospel. He basically tells John he's going to work on his Gospel, but we know that Matthew's Gospel was written before the Gospel of John, years before. Now, the only thing I can think of is that maybe John started to write his, but didn't finish it until after Matthew finished his. That's certainly a possibility. Some authors, it does take them more time. But, uh it's Again, this is all going to depend on how staunch you are when it comes to biblical accuracy. I don't think this hurts the Gospel, I don't think it hurts Christianity or the message behind it. But, that is something to keep in mind that there are moments like this where, you know, they they sort of take things and they move the order around. Like, Jesus' travels don't go exactly the way they were in the Bible. And that's the part where if you feel like it should be a, you know, scene by scene taken from the Gospel, that's not what the show does, but it doesn't go so far as to where it becomes blasphemy or heresy. I don't I just don't see it being that that crazy. And at the end of the episode, it was beautiful because it ended with Jesus reading the book of Genesis, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and that then, of course, it sort of um mirrors John writing his book, the very beginning of it, his Gospel, In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. I love that episode. Man, episode 1 was great.
Another key episode that I enjoyed, episode 4 with um Jesse, the the paralytic, the the guy who's paralyzed.
Man, that one was powerful, yo.
Powerful.
It's powerful reading in the Bible and the way that they adapted it, I thought was crazy, just in in a good way. They also introduced the Pharisees, I believe in this episode, and the I don't want to say the antagonists, I guess a group of antagonists, you know, maybe not the antagonist.
Um also, something I found out from doing research is, uh you know, in the show, this is something I didn't even know. So, in the show, right? Jesse is near the pool of Bethesda or Bet- Bethesta, I can never pronounce that, Bethesda, right? Well, the that pool, prior to it being occupied in this time period, used to be a place where they would worship a pagan god. And that's something that I don't think [clears throat] that's in the Bible. I think that's something you have to read about outside the Bible, but I remember looking that up saying, wow, okay, that I didn't know that. I mean, there's a lot of things I don't have the Gospels memorized. There's a lot of things in this show that kind of bring me back to that. Uh and and it does have me opening up my Bible and and reading like, you know, what what was said in the show and comparing it to what's in the book and and that's fun. That's a fun thing to do. So, again, like I said, if this is going to get folks to open their Bible, that's great. Another key episode that, you know, I think a lot of folks love is episode 3. Episode 3 is interesting because uh Jesus is barely in the episode. He's like healing in a tent, which isn't really how Jesus did his healing. He did it outside so everybody can see and they have the basically this uh this fire set and all the companions are around the fire telling stories about Jesus, including Mary, Mother Mary, who shows up and talks about how he was so surprised that Jesus cried as a baby, you know, considering who he is and whatnot. But uh like we talked about, man, Jesus is God, but he's also a man. The Trinity can be a difficult concept for people to grasp, uh especially Jews and even Muslims, because people think that it's polytheism. It's really not. It's It's one God, three persons. I'm not going to get into the theology right now, but uh you know, her idea of I'm surprised he cried, you would think, you know, that a baby that is essentially the the savior of the world, not just the Jews, the world wouldn't cry, but once again, Jesus is still human. That's And that's what I like about the show is there's parts where he's nervous, there's parts where he's joyous, there's parts where he's irritated. You know, he yells at uh at James and John because they I think it was James and John cuz they wanted God to strike lightning down like from the heavens on these guys that threw stones at them, which I do remember being in the Bible, but I think that's later. I think that was later on than where it was here. This is I think the second time Jesus went to Samaria, but they put it in here the first time, and it's fine because the episode really was about like John and James and, you know, their sort of I don't want to say immaturity, but uh it was funny. Rain fire, you want God to rain fire from the sky? Like, relax, like so Jesus told him, "No, it's okay, like we we'll be all right." That was good stuff. There's a character in the show named Praetor Quintus. Now, I don't remember this guy from the Bible.
Honestly, I don't. But uh when I hear him talk, he reminds me so much of Q from Star Trek. I mean, the way that he talks, hit the way he enunciates his words, he sounds like Q. And there's an episode near the end of the season where Jesus is taken to him. Now, this guy is a comes off like a villain. I mean, he's with the Romans. And actually, it wasn't so bad. It, you know, he just gives Jesus a warning, like, you know, be careful out there, watch out what you're doing. Of course, this will come back, I'm sure, in the future. But the last two episodes are essentially building up to the big Sermon on the Mount. And the disciples build this big stage for him, and again, I'm not sure how biblical that was because I don't believe Jesus had a stage like that. But they build it, and then, as I mentioned, Jesus is trying to formulate his thoughts in his head about what he's going to say. Uh once again, I want to repeat, I have no problem with this. Now, if you're Christian and you have a problem with it, I'm not going to argue with you.
This is a gray area. I understand the problem you may have. I understand that, you know, him being receiving, you know, receiving words from the Father, he shouldn't have a problem putting things together, but he's also a man. So, maybe the Father wasn't super clear with him.
I mean, it's difficult to say, but again, I had no problem with it because making Jesus humanizing Jesus and reminding us that he's just a man is, but also God, is important with what's coming in the later parts of the show, the more tragic parts of the show, and the sadder parts of the story. So, Jonathan Roumie continues to dazzle as Jesus. Shah Ar Isaac does a great job as Simon Peter. Paris Patel has a lot more to do this season as Matthew. Everyone pretty much does a good job, man. Also, I want to tell you about The Chosen app.
You can watch The Chosen on the app for free, and there's behind-the-scenes stuff there, too. So, that might be the best way to watch it. I know I mentioned Amazon Prime, but that might be the best way. So, anyways, yeah, those are my thoughts on The Chosen Season 2. I'm excited for Season 3 because we're going to get to actually see the Sermon on the Mount, or at least I hope so, and continue Jesus going around healing people. I'm looking forward to telling you more about it. So, I'd love to hear your comments down below. Do you think that the changes they've made to the biblical narrative, does it bother you?
Do you think it's a problem? Uh if not, tell me why, and tell me if there's maybe some information that I got wrong cuz maybe I forgot something in the gospel. Uh it's been a while since I read it all the way through. Uh I know I I listened to the book of John by James Earl Jones on Easter, and that was awesome because it's James Earl Jones.
Any Anytime James Earl Jones talks is awesome, but uh yeah, let me know in the comments. I'd love to hear from you about that. Take care, and I'll see you in the next video.
