Belgian farmers searched for animals capable of producing enormous amounts of lean meat. The result was an extremely muscular creature unlike practically any other breed on the planet. However, this exaggerated musculature brought dangerous consequences. The Pietrain developed a severe genetic sensitivity to stress.

For decades, many animals suffered attacks related to the so-called halothane gene, which directly affected their muscular and nervous systems. Many visitors are shocked when they discover that it is a real swine. Another curious detail is that despite its intimidating appearance, the Pietrain usually displays relatively calm behavior when raised in appropriate environments.

The Pietrain does not possess the wild, hairy, or monstrous appearance of other rare breeds. Its strangeness comes precisely from the excess of muscular perfection. Number one, the Visayan pig, the wild ghost of the forests that is disappearing from the world. In the heart of the tropical forests of the Philippines, there exists a creature so rare, strange, and mysterious that many local inhabitants spend their entire lives without ever managing to see it. It's dark body covered with thick hair, its spectacular mane that rises during moments of threat, and its extremely wild behavior transform the Visayan pig into one of the most impressive swine breeds ever seen on Earth. But the most frightening detail is that it may disappear forever at any moment. The Visayan warty pig does not resemble common pigs. Its face possesses large natural warts beneath the eyes, something extremely unusual among swine. These structures gave rise to the name warty pig. In adult males, an enormous mane of hair grows along the head and back. When the animal feels threatened, this mane rises completely, making the creature appear twice its actual size. The result is an intimidating, almost demonic appearance.

Unlike modern domestic pigs, the Visayan preserved practically all of its wild instincts intact. They are extremely intelligent, cautious, and difficult to find. Scientists spent decades studying their habits because many individuals simply disappeared before being properly observed. But, the situation of the species became desperate. Accelerated deforestation in the Philippines destroyed much of the Visayan's natural habitat. Illegal hunting and crossbreeding with domestic pigs made the problem even worse. On some islands where thousands of these animals once existed, almost no wild specimens remain today. Many specialists believe the Visayan pig is among the most endangered swine species on the entire planet. The saddest detail is that very few people even know this creature exists. While famous animals receive worldwide attention, the Visayan continues disappearing silently in the shadows of tropical forests. Some international programs attempt to preserve populations in zoos and special reserves. However, reproduction remains extremely delicate. Piglets require specific environments, and adults maintain behavior extremely sensitive to human stress. Even so, researchers continue fighting to prevent one of evolution's most extraordinary creatures from disappearing forever. Perhaps the most impressive aspect is its almost primitive presence. When an adult male raises its enormous black mane in the middle of the dark forest vegetation, it no longer resembles merely a rare pig.
