Subscribe so you don't miss the future of chips. Intel, together with the IMEC research center, has [music] for the first time demonstrated 2D transistors that are compatible with mass production on 300 mm wafers.
This is a key step toward [music] post-silicon chips. Today, the industry is hitting the limits of silicon.
Even gate-all-around and future CFET transistors [music] lose efficiency at extreme scaling.
The solution, two-dimensional materials [music] where the channel is only a few atoms thick but with excellent current control. Intel and IMEC use the [music] family of TMD materials, tungsten disulfide and molybdenum sulfide for N-type and tungsten diselenide for P-type.
The main breakthrough is a manufacturing scheme for contacts and the gate which protects the fragile 2D channels [music] and uses processes close to traditional chip manufacturing. This is not a laboratory trick but a technology that has been tested [music] at a real Intel foundry factory.
Importantly, these are not chips for tomorrow. We're talking about groundwork for the 2030s and 2040s.
But now the industry knows that 2D transistors [music] can truly be scaled.
