Bullies Kept My Hair in Their Locker. The School Didn’t Stop Them.

[00:00:00]They would cut pieces of their victims' hair, keep them in their locker, and then brag about it like trophies. Going to school every day felt terrifying because you never knew what was going to happen. Were they going to insult you, hit you, humiliate you? And then you'd go home, and the bullying would continue online. My parents contacted the school so many times, and the school would just keep on giving them detention. My parents also tried contacting the bullies' parents, [music] and some of their responses were, "What do you want me to do about it? Put them in prison? They're just kids." So, the problem wasn't only the bullying itself.

[00:00:33]It was how the situation was being handled because punishment alone isn't always enough. For some, it might work, but in many cases, repeatedly suspending a child or telling them it's not okay doesn't address the root of the behavior. If a child is bullying, we need to ask why. Because when we understand what's driving the behavior, we have a better chance of stopping it at the source. And when parents fully understand the seriousness of the situation, including the emotional, academic, and legal consequences, they're more willing to take meaningful action.
