When Arrogance Masquerades as Freedom

[00:00:00]In 1957, Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah famously declared, "The black man is capable of managing his own affairs."

[00:00:10]Yet, within a year, Nkrumah became a tyrant, crushing free speech and jailing opponents.

[00:00:16]He proved that talking tough is easy, but governing is hard.

[00:00:20]Fast forward to May 2026, French President Emmanuel Macron arrives in Kenya, bringing the prospect of massive job-creating investments.

[00:00:29]It should have been a win-win economic deal for Kenya's brilliant, struggling youth. Instead, President William Ruto hijacked the stage for cheap political points.

[00:00:39]Pointing at his guest, Ruto declared, "We will not allow ourselves to be slaves.

[00:00:44]We will do it ourselves." The crowd roared.

[00:00:47]But, it was a tragic populist stunt. By shouting down a major investor to look like a hero, Ruto didn't free his people.

[00:00:54]He robbed them of economic opportunity.

[00:00:57]While he played the anti-colonial savior, Kenyan graduates are still driving motorbikes just to survive. We are falling into the exact same trap Nkrumah set 70 years ago. True independence isn't about isolating yourself and shouting at foreign presidents for applause.
