Added:Right now, a massive and dangerous weather machine is cranking up across the central and eastern United States.
And over the next several days, it is going to directly affect tens of millions of people from the upper Midwest all the way to the Atlantic coastline. We are not talking about one isolated severe weather event rolling through a single region and moving on.
We are talking about a multi-day, multi-reion outbreak of life-threatening storms that will push progressively eastward through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, striking some of the most populated cities in the entire country.
And while all of that is happening on land, a tropical system is simultaneously spinning to life right now in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A system that the National Hurricane Center expects to become a tropical storm, and that could intensify into a hurricane before this week is finished. Supercells capable of producing violent long track tornadoes.
Baseball-sized hail, destructive winds topping 70 mph across the Northeast Corridor, a Gulf storm with multiple threatening landfall scenarios that range from a modest tropical storm all the way to a category 2 hurricane. All of it is in play at the same time and all of it requires your attention starting right now. This is one of the most significant and complex weather setups we have seen in a very long time and we are going to walk through every piece of it in detail. Let's get into the full picture starting with what is happening today and building all the way through the week because there is a lot to cover and none of it is routine.
Today is Monday and we begin in the Midwest where the Storm Prediction Center has issued a level three out of five enhanced risk of severe weather.
This is not a small risk area and it is not a marginal upgrade from routine storm activity. The enhanced risk zone stretches across northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, northern Illinois, most of Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan. If you live anywhere within that footprint and today demands your full and undivided attention from the moment you wake up through the late evening hours. Beyond the enhanced risk area, there is still a scattered severe storm threat extending near Chicago, near De Moines, and near Minneapolis. So even if you are just outside the enhanced zone, you are not completely in the clear. Separately, there is a level two slight risk of severe weather posted over portions of North Carolina today, which is worth noting for viewers in that state who may be tracking the system. But the dominant story today, the event that meteorologists are watching most closely and that has the potential to produce truly significant and wide-ranging impacts, is what is setting up across the Midwest this afternoon and evening.
Here is why today is so significant from an atmospheric standpoint and why the meteorological community is paying very close attention to this setup. The wind shear values across the Midwest today are remarkable, especially for this time of the year. Wind shear, the change in wind speed and direction with height through the atmosphere, is one of the most critical ingredients for rotating thunderstorms. When wind shear is strong and organized, supercells can sustain their rotation for long periods of time, producing long track and violent tornadoes. Today's windshare values are not just good, they are outstanding. The significant tornado parameter, a composite index that blends multiple atmospheric ingredients to assess the overall potential for significant tornado activity, is running as high as six across Wisconsin and into Illinois and Iowa. That is not a number you see on an ordinary severe weather day.
Significant tornado parameter values of five, six, seven, and eight represent an environment that is genuinely seriously capable of producing violent tornadoes if the storm mode cooperates and discrete supercells can get themselves organized. The atmosphere today is absolutely loaded with potential energy and any supercell that manages to tap into that environment is going to be an extremely dangerous storm. Now, before we get too deep into the tornado potential, there's a critical caveat to today's setup that you absolutely need to understand. Today is highly conditional and the Storm Prediction Center has acknowledged this uncertainty openly and clearly. The outcome of today's event, whether it becomes a significant tornado outbreak or whether it stays primarily a wind and hail event with only isolated tornado activity, depends heavily on what happens with the early morning convection that is already out there right now. There is already a widespread area of thunderstorm activity across eastern Iowa at this hour. And every storm meteorologist watching this setup is tracking it carefully. That morning storm activity is going to interact with the atmosphere in a very important way over the next several hours. If those morning storms are widespread and aggressive, they can erode the instability needed to fuel afternoon supercells. They can stabilize the lower atmosphere, weaken the temperature contrast along boundaries, and effectively put a damper on the tornado threat for much of the day. In that scenario, today still ends up being a severe weather day with damaging winds and possibly an isolated tornado. But it does not become the major tornado outbreak that the atmospheric parameters have the potential to support. On the other hand, if that morning convection stays relatively contained and moves through quickly, leaving a sharp and well- definfined atmospheric boundary in its wake, then the afternoon and evening setup becomes potentially explosive. The reason boundaries are so important on a day like today is that supercells, the rotating, organized, longive thunderstorms that are responsible for the most significant and violent tornadoes, need something to anchor themselves to as they develop. They seek out atmospheric boundaries, outflow boundaries from prior convection, frontal zones, dry lines, and convergence zones. Wherever the morning storms leave a remnant outflow boundary behind, that is precisely where the afternoon supercells are going to try to develop. And those boundary hugging storms are the ones that carry the highest tornado potential in today's environment. According to the most recent high resolution model guidance, that critical boundary could settle into place somewhere across eastern Iowa or southeastern Minnesota during the early afternoon. If that scenario verifies, the significant tornado parameter values in that corridor are projected to reach as high as 7 to 8 just south of Rochester, Minnesota. 7 to 8. That is an extraordinary reading and it tells us with clarity that if a supercell can develop and successfully tap into that environment, we could be looking at a violent tornado event. EF2 and stronger tornadoes would absolutely be on the table. There's even a real ceiling for violent long track tornadoes if the discrete supercell mode can sustain itself in that environment through the afternoon and early evening. This is the scenario that demands everyone in the threat zone to be fully prepared and fully alert. Let's talk about the hail threat today because the tornado potential sometimes rightfully dominates the conversation, but in doing so can cause people to overlook what is also a very serious large hail risk today. If you live near Green Bay, Rochester, or just east of Minneapolis, you need to protect your vehicles before this afternoon. Any storm that develops in today's environment could produce hail up to baseball size. Baseball-sized hail at around 2 and 3/4 in in diameter is large enough to cause very serious damage to vehicles, shatter windshields, like damage roofs, and injure anyone caught outside without proper shelter when it starts falling. If you live near Wasau or near Madison, Wisconsin, get your vehicles under cover well before this afternoon. S storms begin. Do not wait until you see something on radar.
By the time a hail producing supercell is close enough to appear clearly on radar, you may have only minutes or even less to act. Move vehicles indoors now while you still have time. Let's walk through the timing of today's event in detail because understanding when each phase of this event is expected to arrive will help you make smart, proactive decisions throughout the day.
The morning hours will feature that widespread storm cluster pushing across eastern Iowa. Those storms are expected to produce gusty winds and possibly some small hail, but the tornado threat with the morning cluster should remain relatively limited due to the storm mode being more widespread and linear at that stage. However, those morning storms matter critically because of the boundary they will leave behind when they move through. By early afternoon, as surface heating builds instability and the morning boundary settles into a more clearly defined position, supercells are going to attempt to develop in eastern Iowa, southeastern Minnesota, or possibly shifted a bit further east, depending on where that boundary ultimately settles. The exact position of that boundary remains the biggest forecast uncertainty of the day, and it is something that will become much clearer as the morning progresses, and we can actually see where the storms are setting up. If the setup comes together, as the high resolution models have been suggesting through their most recent runs, we would be looking at a significant tornado threat developing across that area during the afternoon and continuing through the early evening hours. By around 6oot in the evening, multiple supercells could be active simultaneously across the region. To the north, near and around Wasau, there's expected to be a separate cluster of supercells developing from the Marquette area back down toward Oaklair. Those northern supercells carry their own tornado risk along with large to very large hail and damaging wind gusts. The areas near Wasau north of Appleton and near Escanaba in the upper peninsula of Michigan all need to be closely monitoring conditions this afternoon and evening from around 7 hours to 8 in the evening. Supercell activity is expected to remain ongoing east of De Moines and west of Davenport. The tornado threat from these storms is expected to persist through approximately 10 hos or 11 hound tonight before the storm environment gradually becomes less favorable for tornado production and the tornado component of the threat diminishes.
After that threshold, wind and hail threats will continue into the overnight hours. But significant tornado production should become much less likely as we head past midnight across the Midwest. There is also some uncertainty about what happens near the southern Wisconsin corridor during the late evening depending on the precise track of the northern Wisconsin supercells. There is a possibility of a tornado threat extending down toward Madison or Milwaukee during the late evening hours. That is a lower confidence scenario, but it is real enough to mention and anyone in those communities should not assume they are completely removed from the picture tonight. The honest summary on today is straightforward. High confidence severe weather outbreak, significant tornado potential, and an outcome that will depend on the morning storm evolution.
The confidence in a major severe weather event today is not in question. What remains uncertain is specifically how extreme the tornado threat becomes, and that answer will reveal itself as the morning moves forward. Stay weather aware throughout the entire day. Now, let's move to Tuesday because what is coming on Tuesday is every bit as serious as today. And in some ways, it reaches an even larger population simply because of the geography involved. On Tuesday, the entire storm system pivots eastward. The Storm Prediction Center has already issued a level three enhanced risk of severe weather for portions of the Ohio Valley and into the northeast. The enhanced risk includes Cincinnati and Columbus. major metropolitan areas that will be directly in the crosshairs of a dangerous and fastmoving storm system tomorrow afternoon and evening. If you work, live, or have family in those cities, Tuesday is not a normal workday. It is a weather aare day. The severe weather footprint for Tuesday is genuinely enormous. Beyond the enhanced risk zone, there is an allhazards risk, including tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds stretching from near Washington DC up through Philadelphia and New York City. Buffalo, Cleveland, and Nashville fall in a slight risk category. Marginal risks extend into western New England and back into Charlotte, North Carolina.
When you add all of that up, tens of millions of people across one of the most densely populated regions in the entire United States are in the path of tomorrow's storm system, and they need to take this seriously. The headline threat on Tuesday is widespread damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center and the model guidance are in strong agreement that at least one and possibly two distinct lines of thunderstorms will develop. across the Ohio Valley tomorrow and race eastward through the afternoon and evening. These lines are capable of producing wind gusts upward of 70 mph.
In a densely populated urban corridor, 70 mph wind gusts from a squall line mean down trees. Collapsed structures, power lines on roadways, and widespread outages that can affect enormous numbers of people simultaneously. When the power grid is stressed across a major metro area and hundreds of thousands of people lose power at once, restoration can take days. This is a threat that deserves serious preparation regardless of whether you are in a tornado-prone mindset. There will also be a hail threat on Tuesday, though it is expected to be somewhat less extreme than today.
The hail with tomorrow's storms is projected to be generally in the pingpong ball to golf ball size range.
Golfball sized hail is still capable of causing vehicle damage and roof impacts.
And if you have cars sitting outside tomorrow in the enhanced risk area, having a plan to get them protected before storms arrive is still the right call. Now, here is the portion of Tuesday's forecast that carries the most serious potential consequences and deserves the most specific attention.
The Storm Prediction Center has a 5% tornado probability area outlined from roughly Louisville into Pittsburgh with this area extending southward to include Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. A tornado probability area that includes the national capital and two of the nation's largest cities is genuinely significant. This is not a token acknowledgement of some remote possibility. The threat is real. It is outlined by the country's premier severe weather forecasting organization and everyone in those metropolitan areas needs to be treating Tuesday as a day when tornado watches and warnings are a real possibility. Beyond the official probability parameters, the high resolution model guidance is raising a more specific and serious concern for the Washington DC and Philadelphia corridor. Specifically, several models are showing the potential for discrete supercell thunderstorms to develop near and around DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia during the afternoon hours before the main squall line arrives and absorbs everything into a linear mode.
If those discrete supercells can get organized and the environmental conditions in that area tomorrow do support that possibility, the windshare in place is more than sufficient to support significant tornado production.
An EF2 or stronger tornado threat needs to be explicitly stated for the DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia corridor for tomorrow afternoon. This is not a remote scenario. It is a real and documented threat in the model guidance that must be taken seriously by everyone in that area. Tuesday's severe weather timeline begins during the late morning hours in Ohio. A large cluster of thunderstorms is expected to already be active near Cleveland, Erie, and Columbus by that time, producing widespread damaging winds of 60 to 70 mph as they push east.
Discrete supercell development is not expected as a significant factor until after midday. By early to mid-afternoon, a couple of supercells may develop north of New York City, but the primary corridor for organized supercell activity and tornado potential remains near Washington DC. By around 5:0 Eastern time, multiple storm cells could be ongoing simultaneously in that area.
Some discrete and rotating, some embedded within the broader squall line stretching from central New York into West Virginia. By 6 to 7 Eastern time, the discrete supercells are expected to get overtaken by the main squall line and the threat transitions primarily back to widespread damaging winds for the remainder of the evening. Most severe weather along the east coast should end by 9 hours to 10 a eastern time Tuesday evening with some lingering activity possible across Kentucky, West Virginia, and southern Ohio into the late evening hours. One additional piece of Tuesday's forecast adds more complexity to an already busy picture.
Some model guidance is indicating the potential for a separate line of thunderstorms to develop across Kentucky during the afternoon, producing a widespread damaging wind threat independently of the main east coast system. This is part of why a slight risk of severe weather covers much of the Tennessee Valley. If you live near Nashville, Knoxville, or Pikeville, you need to have weather alerts active all day tomorrow. The East Coast storms near Washington DC and New York City are near certain events. The Tennessee Valley scenario carries more uncertainty, but it is not something to ignore. Looking to Wednesday, a third round of severe weather arrives, this time concentrated along the southeast coast. The primary area of concern Wednesday will be near Raleigh, Winston Salem, and Virginia Beach. Wednesday's setup looks more like a classic warm season severe weather day. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat with an isolated tornado risk near Virginia Beach and possibly near Cape Hatteris if a discrete supercell can develop. There will also be a chance of some hail with the stronger Wednesday storms, though nothing as extreme as what is expected today or tomorrow. The main concern is the wind threat, which can be damaging and widespread even in a relatively ordinary warm season setup.
We are not forecasting Wednesday to be in the same tier of danger as today and tomorrow. But that does not mean you should ignore it. Even a typical severe weather day can produce significant wind damage and down trees. And when it follows two backto-back major outbreak events, it gets less attention than it deserves. After two consecutive days of major severe weather across the country, alert fatigue becomes a genuine safety risk. People begin to tune out to assume that since the big events already happen, the week is done producing threats. Do not let that mindset take hold if you live along the Carolina coast or in coastal Virginia on Wednesday. Now, let's talk about what is developing in the Gulf of Mexico because this story is growing in importance by the hour. Tropical depression 2 is currently spinning in the Gulf and the National Hurricane Center expects it to be named Tropical Storm Bertha later today. Depending on how this system evolves over the coming 48 to 72 hours and whether it can avoid the significant wind shear currently present over the eastern Gulf, there is a real possibility that Bertha could intensify into a hurricane before making landfall.
The National Hurricane Center's current track has this system moving toward the northern Gulf Coast with the most likely landfall scenario placing it somewhere near New Orleans during late Tuesday into early Wednesday as a middle-grade tropical storm. At that intensity level, wines at landfall would be around 60 mph. a meaningful storm that brings heavy rainfall, storm surge, and tropical storm force winds, but not a catastrophic scenario for the Louisiana coast. However, there are multiple competing track scenarios, and the differences in impacts between those scenarios are very large. The first scenario, considered the least probable currently, has the storm tracking toward Pensacola and Mobile. A shorter Gulf track means less intensification time, and this scenario likely keeps the system as a lowgrade tropical storm at landfall. The second scenario, the current consensus, brings the storm to the Louisiana coast near New Orleans as a middle-grade tropical storm around 60 mph. The third scenario, generating the most concern among forecasters, involves the storm tracking further south and west across the Gulf toward Corpus Christi and Houston. More time over warm Gulf waters combined with weaker wind shear in the Western Gulf could allow rapid intensification. Category 1 or category 2 hurricane strength would be squarely on the table in this scenario.
A major hurricane striking the Texas coast would be a significant and dangerous event for millions of people.
Looking at the spaghetti model guidance, and it has been quite a while since we needed to pull these up, not since Melissa was making landfall in Jamaica back in October of 2025, most solutions cluster along the Louisiana coastline or toward New Orleans. with a meaningful cluster of outlier members pulling the storm further west toward Corpus Christi and Houston. The European Ensemble model is showing enough members reaching strong tropical storm or low-end hurricane intensity to validate concerns about the higher intensity western Gulf scenario. The high resolution model guidance contains some particularly notable details. One solution brings the storm toward Mobile for an early Wednesday morning landfall while keeping most of the convection offshore and then shows a secondary circulation redeveloping south of New Orleans before eventually pushing toward the Houston area by late Thursday and Friday.
Another solution from a model with a known aggressive bias for tropical intensity, but corroborated here by the hurricane model running a similar scenario brings the storm through the Louisiana marshland just south of New Orleans late Wednesday night, clips the coast, and then shows it reintensifying as it moves toward Corpus Christi and Houston as a low-end hurricane. That is a scenario the entire western Gulf Coast needs to be watching very carefully over the next several days. The Gulf water temperatures are very warm right now, providing abundant energy for tropical intensification. The windshare near Florida is currently acting as a limiting factor. But if the track takes this system away from that shear zone and into the central or western Gulf, intensification could be rapid and significant. If it moves quickly up into the northern Gulf Coast, wind shear remains a constraining factor, and the intensity ceiling stays low. The track evolution over the next 24 to 48 hours is absolutely critical in determining how dangerous this system ultimately becomes. Even a tropical storm at 60 mph is not something coastal communities should take casually. Storm surge, flooding rainfall, and gusty winds can all produce damaging impacts well inland from the center of circulation.
Preparation should begin now regardless of which track scenario ultimately verifies. Because the window between tropical storm formation and landfall in the Gulf can be very short. There is no reason to panic right now, but there is every reason to be informed. Stay actively updated and know your specific plan if you live anywhere along the Gulf Coast from the Florida panhandle to the Texas coast. Stepping back and looking at this entire week as a single picture.
The level of simultaneous weather risk across the country is genuinely remarkable. A high ceiling tornado outbreak today across the Midwest. a multi-hazard severe weather outbreak tomorrow across the Ohio Valley and the entire Northeast. A third round of storms along the southeast coast on Wednesday, and a developing Gulf tropical system that could land anywhere from a modest tropical storm to a category 2 hurricane. All of this simultaneously, all of it requiring preparation, all of it unfolding in real time this week. This is the kind of weather week that you will be talking about for a long time afterward. And right now, you have the opportunity to be ready for it. If you have not yet set yourself up with multiple alert systems, do that right now before this broadcast ends. Wireless emergency alerts on your smartphone are a baseline starting point, but they are not sufficient on their own. Cell networks can become overloaded during large events, and alerts relying exclusively on those networks can be delayed at exactly the moment when seconds matter. A dedicated weather app adds a critical second layer. A batteryowered weather radio provides reliable alert coverage, even when cell networks are overwhelmed during major events, which they often are. Know your shelter location ahead of any tornado event. Know exactly where you will go in your home, at work, or in your vehicle if a tornado warning is issued for your area. An interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows, is always the right move when a tornado warning is in effect. If you live on the Gulf Coast, review your hurricane preparedness plan now. Know your evacuation zone. Have a supply kit ready. Know where you're going if an evacuation order is issued. And make that plan before the storm is close enough to make the roads dangerous.
