Episode 2 - Stronger Together. My first Ultra-marathon with team DFRNT.Added:
Hello and welcome to the vlog. We are on our way down to Kawaram to run the 80 km L River Ultra as a team with some members from our gym. Um, so it's going to be five different legs.
And >> what leg are you doing?
>> I'm doing leg four. Um it's going to be five different legs. And basically we'll be running along the Cape to Cape Trail here in WA. Um passing over our timing chip at every single uh checkpoint. We're not doing this to to break any records. Uh the the group I run with logging, they've got a team down here, too, and they will be breaking some records.
>> Very good team.
>> Um so, we're not even going to try to keep up with them, but it's just more doing something a little bit different.
We never really well, I've never really run in a team, so it's going to be pretty cool to experience that. But also, apparently, you see some of the sites here are like unbelievable things that you just wouldn't be able to see um unless you were running. So, pretty excited. It's going to be a lot of fun. Um, we'll take you along for the journey. I will have a camera with me while I'm running.
>> I'll take you along for the journey >> and I'll try and um >> I'm camera girl.
>> I'll try.
>> I'll try and document as much as I can of the run itself and then also my internal thoughts. It should be a really fun weekend. A little bit less serious. Still going to be clocking miles in the legs for Sydney.
Um getting some KS into like into the legs in hills and obviously pretty tricky terrain which we'll just carry forward. Um but yeah, >> where are we going now?
>> We are going to pick up the bib. Um done a food shop carved up ready to go and the boys are on route to accommodation.
Um and then the other boys are going to meet us for dinner. And I'm just going to go pick up our bib now so we're prepared and ready in the morning. This part of the world, if you've never been to the southwest of WA, this is God's country.
Bib is collected. We're ready to go.
We've already seen some different other different members down here. It's crazy.
Um, I reckon tomorrow there's going to be like 20 of us running. We'll just randomly see each other at different parts. It's going to be a lot of fun.
But when we take you along for the ride tomorrow on the run, look at the kind of stuff we're going to be running around.
>> How you feeling? First leg?
>> Uh, heavy legged.
>> How much um how much prep's gone into today's work? a 10k run three days ago and I died. So >> well, Rick, >> are you gas?
>> Probably 180 maybe.
>> It's the perfect start for you. Run a little bit then stop.
>> Three race forwards. out hard and just try to hold >> a few.
>> Let's go.
>> What time did I >> I don't know. It was hard.
>> Was that a little bit more hectic than I realized that I was behind this one whole life?
>> Nice. Good job.
Go.
You ready?
>> Got your gels.
>> Well, you run up this.
>> Nice. Good job.
>> Hurting a bit. A lot of sand.
Just over coming up that 2k mark. Oh [ __ ] Got to keep going. Come on.
Just got to chill a little bit.
Find that cadence. Keep moving.
There's already been two hills, a lot of sand.
It's all about endurance, not about going out.
[ __ ] is pretty though. A lot of this pretty technical. Lot of rocks there.
Back on the sand.
I think the sand's just about still trying to move.
Not going to break any records directly into the wind right now. But keep moving. And then when you get flat ground or standing downhill, that's when you go like we can make up heaps of time. I feel good at like 10ks. That's that's the mission. Get to 10 and then just slowly last little bit of sand for a while, I think. [ __ ] it's been hard. like you just can't get any momentum as soon as you do this rock. Um like I said, I'm just trying to keep moving.
We're about to 5k mark. So hopefully it starts to get a little bit better from here on in.
That last bit was so technical.
Literally non-stop winding, rocks everywhere. Oh, it's crazy. But I think seems to have all been like pretty much uphill so far. Um, a lot of sand, too.
So, hopefully the back half. I can make up some time.
About 10ks in [ __ ] Oh, man. I've just literally had about 900 m hill. I haven't seen another one above. So, big downhill right now. Trying to make up some ground. Everything's been on like sand so far. Um, just can't get any like footing. Oh, this is so hard. This is what I've been running on.
Okay, I think we're back into stand the last couple of caves. Managed to make up some time. Um, and we're back into some sand. We got 6Ks to go. There's no point in sprinting this. Let's hold on in those last couple. I'm going to empty the tank.
It's hard because you want to pick up the pace in the downhill, but the sand is so soft, you just slide everywhere.
Two and a half to go.
>> Hayden, talk me through your prep.
>> Had a couple of bananas to start. Um, two coffees, chicken avocado sandwich, which is not sitting too well, but I don't know. The gel mixed in should be all good.
>> And your knees? What about your knees?
>> Uh, not taped yet, but soon to be taped.
Neproxen going down shortly after. Um, so yeah, I won't be feeling a thing.
I'll be floating out there.
>> Go D.
Go. Let's go. Almost there.
Good job.
>> That's what I'm saying. Those the Oakley Meta glasses.
>> There's nothing.
>> I thought I'd take this time to have a bit of a chat about yesterday's race.
just the morning after going for a shakeout run while getting some more KS in um before the half marathon was big coming. But I'm so proud of the boys and how they went yesterday. Especially Richard like he was pretty nervous coming into that.
Um and he still gave it his all. I think we came fourth with the fourth male team, seventh overall or fifth overall. Have to double check that. But um I'll do another recap after this. But really, really proud. Um Hayden, that was his first race ever, but he smashed it.
Short had a really hard leg and just like made up so much time for us, so much fun. Those are the kind of things that so grateful for being able to do. um owning a gym, you have the you have the capability to push your friends or to invite your friends along on the journey and do things that maybe they wouldn't have, but that's something we'll be able to tell our kids one day. Um we all do that together and it was so much fun.
So, what an epic day. And then obviously our support crew of Devs, Grace and Kate, like we just can't do it without them.
